Oh the stories we can tell. The last time Justin Vernon recorded a full length album, he went out to a remote cabin in Wisconsin and came out with the brilliant "For Emma, Forever Ago" under the Bon Iver moniker. That was a quiet, emotional record that primarily relied on a lone acoustic guitar and Vernon's own doubled over and harmonized vocals. The last time we heard from Collections of Colonies of Bees, the post-rock group had released their fifth long player, an odd but ultimately whipsmart composition titled "Birds". It was in fact somewhat close to the release of [...]
I wouldn't call this a collaboration as much as I would call it a friendship and I mean that in the best way possible. Volcano Choir is the product of Justin Vernon ( Bon Iver ) and the awesomeness that is the Collections of Colonies of Bees . A mouthful, I know... but the name is practically an understatement when you're bathing in this band's bold orchestration. Their love for music itself and gift to truly experiment compliments Justin's ability to emote all too perfectly... and what I mean by that is, however little he actually sings [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Speaking of collaborations , Wisconsin's Volcano Choir brings together Justin Vernon ( Bon Iver ) and Collection of Colonies of Bees (which features former members of the mighty Pele ). The nine tracks that make up their JagJaguwar debut, Unmap have more in common with ambient music than either of Volcano Choir other parts. Using tape loops and minimal vocals, and restrained traditional instruments Unmap plays more like a score to a film than a traditional indie [...]

I was really excited for Volcano Choir's debut album. I heard the lead single, "Island, IS," and got pretty pumped to hear the whole album. So I listened to it. And again. And again. And I was confused. I was not pumped. I was not excited. I was just bored. So much . The band is a side project of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Chicago band Collections of Colonies of Bees. It just screams art and lacks a whole lot of substance. It was a nice try though! I don't think the band should go anywhere, just [...]

Ever read an album review of your 14th favorite band online and thought "Whoever wrote this is a flaming pile of monkey turds. I could burp out a better review than this.' Well burp away, my friends. Or in more technical terms... "It's possible that over the past several weeks you've noticed the reviews slow to a trickle around these parts. We had our reasons! Cookies weren't involved! Okay, maybe they were! All of us at Tripwire HQ are pleased to introduce to you today a new chapter in our "take" on music criticism—by handing over the keys. [...]

A left field choice, the 2009 Polaris Music Prize has been awarded to Toronto hardcore group Fucked Up for their album 'The Chemistry of Common Life'.
Perhaps it'll never earn For Emma 's unrivaled reputation as being music to hang your hearts and dreams upon, but Unmap is a dynamic batch of aural wilderness to get lost in. The term "folk" has become such an anomaly in today's underground music scene -- a label applied with so much gusto and baggage in the latter half of our decade and having lost so much of its original definition -- that these days it's implied more as an aesthetic than in relation to any particular instrumental approach. What exactly makes you "folk"? Does playing [...]

Volcano Choir is the kind of band you wouldn't mind being deserted with. In fact, Justin Vernon (from Bon Iver ) is very well adapted in this context. Together with Collections of Colonies of Bees , Vernon and fellow his Wisconsinites bring you Volcano Choir and their debut album, Unmap – an ethereal collection of delicate sounds, light and spirited. Photo: Cameron Wittig You constantly find yourself immersed in Unmap due to the very minimalist sounds of Volcano Choir as [...]

Volcano Choir is set to release their debut LP, "Unmap", on September 22nd via Jagjaguwar Records. Jagjaguwar: Volcano Choir is an assembly of Wisconsinites Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek. You might find these old friends also frequenting records and stages under different monikers, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver. The collaboration predates the meteoric rise of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver project, with original songwriting dating back to the summer of 2005, right around the time the Bees first toured with Vernon's previous band DeYarmond Edison. [...]

Perhaps if Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver ) began a long-distance collaboration with the guys from Collections of Colonies of Bees back in, say, the early 2000s, they would've called their little alliance the Postal Service . But now that the name is already taken and, more importantly, broadband is available even in Wisconsin, there'd be no reason. Despite the physical distances that often stood between Vernon and the Milwaukee-based Bees, they e-mailed music files to each other instead of using a courier. And, by sending countless sequences of ones and zeros through space and time, they collectively [...]

What happens when Justin Vernon of Bon Iver collides with the ambient outfit that is Collections of Colonies of Bees? A beautiful music baby is born to the world and they shall name it Volcano Choir . Back in the summer of 2005, Wisconsin natives Jon Mueller , Chris Rosenau , Jim Schoenecker , Dan Spack , Thomas Wincek and Justin Vernon began the original song writing for what looks to be a fantastic release. 'Island, IS" is the first song to be released off the upcoming debut [...]
