Hey man, it's officially summer! I mean I think it was "official" a few weeks ago, but once you get to free Slurpee day at participating 7-11s you pretty much know it's summer for real. I didn't get a free Slurpee today because the only flavor I ever enjoyed was Coca Cola, and after two full weeks of not drinking soda I didn't want to tempt myself and fall off the wagon. So...no free Slurpee for me this year. Still, it's fucking summer now! Let's have a party! Okay, enough exclamation points. Instead of speed-writing excitedly [...]

Jai Paul returns with the next tiny glimpse at his musical brilliance - and like it happened the first time with BTSTU - at first i just thought 'what the fuck is this?'. and then jai paul showed me the light. and i understood. i actually hate that jungle drum song to death. but this remix is just to good . Jai Paul for motherfucking president Emilia Torrini - Jungle Drum (Jai Paul Remix)
So my schedule has been all over the place lately, including a trip up to New England where I stayed with some family friends who had no wireless and used dial-up (see: computer equivalent of the stone age). I also missed the past two mailbags. I chose not to write the first one because the submissions were that bad, but the most recent was just because I've been in the middle of internet-less New Hampshire. SO, because I feel like I owe VacayNation something special, here is the most epic post of my Vacay career: El Gingero's VacayAwards. [...]

Three I'd-like-to-be-more-clever-tha n-to-just-comment-on-the-weath er-but-today-is-a-brutal-one reasons to suck it up this Memorial day and carefully head to the Pritzker Pavilion tonight... 1. The pride of Champaign-Urbana, Hum , have re-reunited to play for you - their surprisingly enthusiastic and loyal fans. I mean that must be it, as this seems like another one-off and not the beginning of something larger. It's kind of like the live version of thumbing through your CD's - If you're a Hum fan you still thumb through CD's, no doubt - looking for something you haven't listened to in ages. For me [...]

Compiling Mt. St. Helens's famous eruption, Dan Rather, looting, 80s footage, TV static poisoning, interrupted news broadcasts and violent lip dubs that just look plain weird, the new video for Popular Music's "Volcano" from Felix Cartal featuring the vocals of...

Volcano - a yvynyl mixtape My blog bro Mark created another fantastic mix and it’s fantastic. I finally got a chance to listen to it and it’s full of goodness. Hello, summer. yvynyl : I’m not sure, but the frequency of new mixtapes seems to be increasing. Not just because I feel the compulsive need to share musical gems, but because mind-blowingly incredible music keeps finding me. This internet thang - damn - its like a deep, deep well of art and culture and great minds. I can’t [...]

An unprecidented tracklist here that Mark has put together. Go download it!! Twice! yvynyl : Volcano - a yvynyl mixtape I’m not sure, but the frequency of new mixtapes seems to be increasing. Not just because I feel the compulsive need to share musical gems, but because mind-blowingly incredible music keeps finding me. But I got some tracks with me. The first one, "Regenerate", is off Booka Shade's new album "More!" and is a perfect spring tune. Starting of dark and broody, with distant eery vocals and a deep kick, it slowly builds up to a beautiful break down and sudden euphoria. I only got into it after a few listens so give it some time. You'll love it. "Whole Life" is produced by swedish bro Oxia, a tech-house feelgood trip to watch volcanos by. Enjoyy Regenerate Whole Life [...]

A couple of things about ducks: 1) the males have giant, corkscrew-shaped penises and 2) they have an unfortunate penchant for gang-rape. While I was in college, a few friends and I had just finished a delicious and affordable meal at a South Bay Chili's when we witnessed one of the more disturbing spectacles of our young lives. A group of ducks were gathered near the edge of the parking lot and appeared to be reenacting a scene from "The Accused." As we walked closer, we saw two ducks holding down the head of what we [...]
Many bands' touring plans were delayed, deterred, diverted, or altogether canceled because of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption. One of those bands was Brooklyn synth-rockers Bear in Heaven. “Bear In Heaven was stranded in the Madrid Airport. Out of pure and unbreakable boredom, we put a camera on a baggage claim belt…” the band says at the beginning of this video for “ Dust Cloud .” The video literally turns shoegazing on it's head, giving us a dreamy shoe's-eye view courtesy of the slow spin of the luggage carousel. I love how this is mostly a [...]
Love a good breezy pop song. Hope you do too. Friday afternoons always call for a good bit of pop goodness i reckon. The Mary Onettes from Sweden have come to the rescue with my Friday chiller. Reminds me a lot of awesome 80s/90s Brissy band The Go-Betweens. And given how massive they were, and [...]
At long last, an Icelandic musician has come forward in order to help the world learn how to pronounce Eyjafjallajokull. That word, which literally means Island Mountain Glacier, is the name of the volcano that recently erupted, wreaking havoc on travelers and industries worldwide. Until now, most of it were simply calling it "volcano," or even "Iceland" (hey, we were angry). But now you can watch this video of Eliza Geirsdottir Newman singing and playing her ukulele, sound like a true volcanologist and fall in love with Iceland all over again. (Newman starts playing [...]

Wow, these images look like something out of a motion picture. And now we hear there's another volcanic eruption in Iceland. Filed under: Icelandia , Somethin' Diff Tagged: icelandic , new , pictures , volcano
SNL' opened the show last night with a sketch dedicated to coverage of the ash caused by Eyjafjallajokull's volcano. The airline-crippling eruption really served as a jumping off point for some great impersonations - Larry King, Richard Branson, and notably Bjork, played to perfection by Kristen Wiig. "Iceland's only celebrity" proudly announced that something positive has actually come out it: "Iceland is now the world's #1 exporter of volcanic ash. Previously our main exports were reindeer bones and giggles." Economy saved. (via huffingtonpost.com )
We had originally planned on having a volcano-themed Slaylist this week, featuring tracks with volcanic connections, and songs by the multitude of bands (such as The Red Chord, Shrinebuilder, Vried and so on) wo've had to cancel shows this week due to the ash clouds spewing forth from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano. However, the death of [...]
