We had originally planned on having a volcano-themed Slaylist this week, featuring tracks with volcanic connections, and songs by the multitude of bands (such as The Red Chord, Shrinebuilder, Vried and so on) wo've had to cancel shows this week due to the ash clouds spewing forth from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano. However, the death of [...]

We've compiled again our annual megamix to showcase what's cooking at the Top Billin camp this year. This time it's 90 minutes of bass monsters, riddims, big city house and deeper house cuts. We're also celebrating the release of the mix today at Redrum, which will be our last event there, so hopefully we'll see all our pals there. Check party info and download the mix. MEGAMIX TRACKLISTING: 01. Rico Tubbs & Top Billin - Hazy Shade Of Purple 02. TV OFF - Boogiemon (Sharkslayer remix) 03. [...]

Mass evacuations, grounded passengers, airports at a standstill , fire, ice, plumes of volcanic ash floating across the continent... and somehow we still think we're in control... Explosions in the Sky - Snow and Lights Sigur Ros - Untitled 1 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Storm Golden Ages - Right Season * [...]

Ever since Volcano's Beautiful Seizure erupted five years ago in a flurry of ramshackle hysteria and blithering, yet beautiful incoherency, the realms of disjointed noise-core and palpated sonic onslaughts bordering on the clinically insane have become all but rather sparse. And this is precisely where Atlanta, Georgia's Untied States come into their own in a frenzied bustle of writhing guitar harmonics and crazed squeals. Distilling down the raw vociferousness of doom mongers Liars, the virtually crazed virtuosity of Menomena, the crunching instrumentation of Sonic Youth and the purified rage of Fugazi Untied States are such a rounded package, [...]

One of the brightest spots in Chicago's summer concert series are the Downtown Sound shows at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park . The Monday night concert series has featured a variety of acts including up-and-coming indie groups such as St. Vincent and the Dirty Projectors in 2009. Yesterday, we posted news that She & Him are confirmed to play a Monday, June 7 , date. Well, Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis posted the entire lineup to his blog yesterday afternoon. Highlights, aside from She & Him, include a reunited Hum, Caribou, Kid Sister and the [...]
Good times tonight watching KT play softball and then eating at Canter's for the first time (not including matzoh ball soup take-out). It was good! That's about all I have to say about today. Part of it was good. I haven't posted one of these in a while, so here are the best Google search results of the day which have directed Internet users to Swan Fungus during the last hour: 10. Sinbad re-married his ex-wife 09. Reasons to go for it and date 08. Coolness burger king sex 07. I realize what is my [...]

Volcano! makes music that manipulates the mind and body. I'm not sure what strange practice of hypnosis these men studied, perhaps jazz, but every time I hear "Africa Just Wants to Have Fun" I end up breaking something. Volcano! is based out of Chicago, IL and is made up of Aaron With, Sam Scranton and Mark Cartwright. The group has been around since 2003, so this music is not new by any means. With that written it doesn't detract from the fact that the music is incredible and I felt compelled to write about it. Having stalked the group's [...]

Another day, another splash in the swimming pool of confusion, and all centred around one simple question: who are Volcanoes ? The trad-guitar-band that makes carefully crafted folky guitar jangles like The Room With The Red Door ? The scratchy, horn-tinted, aggro-crunch band of Temple ? Or the band that makes an entirely unexpected, possibly dubious, semi-rap-rock of Making Progress ? Rule #1 of ANBAD 's puddled outlook on life is there's no merit in consistency , and Volcanoes are certainly avid subscribers to this [...]

Under normal circumstances, the four band lineup has become something that I do not look forward to as much as I once did. My attention span and irritability level after 10pm is not what it used to be, and the thought of attending a late show with a bill of more than two bands just seems like too daunting a task sometimes. It also often results in me becoming a bit of a harsher critic by the time I get to bands three and four simply because by that point of the evening I've become a grumpy old man. [...]
About a month after dropping their sophomore disc, Sunshower, Brooklyn's own Jupiter One were pegged shortly after the disc's release by Regina Spektor for a US tour. The guys bring their shimmery gem-filled mix of reverb, guitars and shouts to...
It has been a very strange - sometimes fun, sometimes agonizing - week. I don't really have much else to say. Here's your Sunday Mix Tape. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. Of course there's a fucking theme [...]
Audiţie plăcută! he plus she equals harmony The National feat. St. Vincent - Sleep All Summer [...]

Shit on a stick likes his Volcano vaporizer Like most of you (I presume), I smoke a lot of weed. And like most of you (I presume again), I don't have a lot of cash flow. As a result, I've come to the conclusion that I have to either stop burning so much or figure out a magical way to get super high on less trees. My throat is also on the outs. Now of course I can get a bong. Hell - I can even make one. But my 30th birthday [...]

Here I go, getting all sappy again, but I have long been a fan of this song and once it popped onto my iPod this morning on the commute, I had to post the vid. Damien Rice 's song "The Blower's Daughter," has always been a powerful one for me, the message of deep, agonizing longing of the tune coupled with the deep relevance of when I discovered the tune (save for that last line), it's utterly heartbreaking. The track is off the acclaimed, O and was also featured in the film "Closer." [...]
