Volcanoes are cool. And so are Volcano! the latest band signed to the lovely Leaf Label. But when they erupt from their jazzy slumber don't expect red hot lava to start leaking everywhere. This Chicago trio gush skittering falsetto highlife jams. Lava would've been cooler, but you can't have everything.

I'd be surprised if you like the new single from Chicago's volcano! (the exclamation mark is very intentional) on first listen. There's just so much to process; do you focus on the lyrics (denouncing the misguided nature of some of the self-aggrandizing popstars involved in Live Aid and similar campaigns), the guitar melody that jumps jerkily around like it's got an itch it can't scratch or follow the drum and basslines that sound as if they're refugees from a free-jazz record but forced to do battle in the confines of a structured song? I almost missed this one. The debut album by Sennen has been around for a couple of months now but I've only just managed to get a copy. The Norwich band will release a new single at the end of September. " Where The Light Gets In " will feature remixes from the likes of ILIKETRAINS & The Early Years. These geeks definitely deserve my spotlight for new artist of the week. Not only they are awesome and crazy but they are preparing to release their sophomore record Paperwork . The journey for Paperwork starts today with the release of the first single, "Africa Just Wants To Have Fun". It will be available digitally sometime today over at The Leaf label , and on limited hand-numbered 7" on August 11. Some bands have a contagious energy that pours through their music, and volano! is one of those bands. Despite some obvious experimental elements, the band manages to create music that is both catchy and worth dancing to.
