Sleeping Bag is a new band from Bloomington that will keep you warm through the lo-fi winter months. Headed by Dave Segedy , Sleeping Bag has been recording through the winter months and has recently posted Slime as a free download via Bandcamp . Sleeping Bag encompasses a raw and edgy sound that harkens back Starflyer 's Silver album in the early `90s, with a power pop sound that takes me back to Weezer 's Blue album. During Sleeping Bag's live set, Dave Segedy is backed by [...]

Our good friend, Bro. Stephen has had a few hand-made releases, but now in collaboration with Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records and their Laminar Excursion Monthly , he has a new record to share with us. Here's the skinny: The record was record completely live with an all-star band in one afternoon at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN. There are 4 songs clocking in at exactly 20 minutes (the format is a 33 CD). These songs may be a bit different than [...]

I have found myself immersed in a full inbox of music again (there are worse things), but I tend to get muddled in it all instead of casually floating among fantastic sounds and beats. So basically I tend to listen to soo much, albums get one listen and then it is on to the next. Some artists/PR emails send one track - I often find that not enough to gauge if I like the band/album (usually as the "lead off" track is the up tempo, jangly indie you tube track that I don't prefer and the real gems are hidden [...]

I got my first apartment in 2004 in Old Louisville. I had lived in the East End for a year when I first moved to town, but moving downtown really felt like my first big city experience. I grew up in a very small town in central Michigan so everything in Louisville seemed exciting, especially the music. I found myself a few times crammed into the Old Louisville Coffeehouse or Crescent Hill Baptist watching a number of bands like the great Poison Control Center or Harry and the Potters playing with who I thought was the greatest band I had [...]
You heard it here first! In a joint effort, Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records (both from Bloomington) are releasing a series of records on 33 CDs that will be released monthly (2 releases per month) as a year long subscription service called the Laminar Excursion Monthly . Sales will open up on Monday, November 2nd and they are EXTREMELY limited to only 100 copies. Each 33 CD will be approximately 20 minutes of new, unreleased music from each artist. Lots of the bands involved frequently play here in Louisville, so it [...]
it goes a little something like this: my aim with the label is to release music by friends and people whose art i feel strongly about and to share these sounds with those around the world who need them... those who will listen and draw closer. and if that's not the perfect bloody reason to start a [...]

Okay, so it isn't really a profile of the label, but I am a fan of a couple of artists (so far, I am sure my "fandom" will grow once I really dig into Third Uncle). Those artists are the overly Slowcoustic profiled Elephant Micah (mentioned here , here and here ) and new on my radar, Vollmer. Elephant Micah and Vollmer share more than the label and a penchant for ethereal folk/experimental noise: they both were responsible for Elephant Micah's stellar "Exiled Magicians" - EM with the actual music creation and Vollmer assisting [...]

vollmar the introducing 2009 (française version) Le Printemps nous gâte. Tout doucement. Disque après disque. Hier The Rest. Aujourd'hui Vollmar. Demain Troy Faid, Glen Johnson. Des sons, des parfums. Oui.

Justin Vollmar bangs out skewed folk songs in the vein of Phil Elverum and Kyle Field. His songs are stripped down and lo-fi but with a playful edge of experimentation and apparent lack of respect for the normal methods of recording. His latest record Okay which comes out in November on Blue Sanct , is a haunting portrait of interpersonal relationships with the most interesting tracks centering around a character named Sue. Some songs are intrinsically melodic while others bury those feelings under restrained feedback and tape scratch. The latter tracks plunging the record into darker more [...]
