People at parties — we love 'em, we hate 'em, our Facebook walls are littered with annoying photos of 'em. But from the shores of San Francisco and New York comes a finally useful PEOPLE AT... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

Obviously the title's more than a bit facetious, but we did want to do something a little special to celebrate the 200th episode of our weekly Bay Bridged podcast . For this week's show, we each picked four artists featured on past podcasts (one for each year of the show) and discussed some memorable behind-the-scenes highlights, including tales of excessive drinking, awkward conversation, and equipment failures. On a serious note, we'd like to thank all of the listeners who've made doing the show so rewarding. Thank you also for indulging us in this silly look back [...]

Our latest Monthly Mix episode of the weekly podcast includes music from nine great Bay Area bands - some submissions we've received at TBB headquarters, some stuff we've posted on the web site recently, all really good stuff. About all of the bands: Oakland songwriter Brian Glaze ("Leader of the Band") returns with his [...]

San Francisco's electro-soul queens Von Iva will be making a stop at Slim's on June 6th as a part of their headlining tour along the West Coast. The band has come a long way, earning several points of recognition in the mainstream media, most notably their work as Zooey Deschanel's band in the movie Yes Man . Supporting the all girl group on Saturday will be LA's Gliss and Minneapolis' Sick of Sarah . Von Iva - "Guise" (from [...]

Gliss' current tour may not necessarily be one for the ages, but it's certainly one for the police blotter. The L.A. trio, criss-crossing the country in support of its sophomore release "Devotion Implosion" [ review ], has felt the exhilaration of playing several bang-up shows — they circle back to L.A. and play with Von Iva on Friday at the Roxy. But that's been tempered by anguish of having been ripped off in New Jersey and the panic of having dodged bullets in Austin, Texas. Multi-instrumentalist Marty Klingman, on the phone from Texas [...]
Gliss - Sister Sister No, this has nothing to do with the hilarious TV show of yesteryear. "Sister Sister" is a powerful tune by LA based Gliss, a head turning fuzz-rock outfit making some very sweet noise with their latest LP Devotion Implosion . The album is full of rib rattling power chords and bass beats bathed in luscious feedback which provide a rich ambience for singer Victoria Cecilia's weighty vocals. NPR may have put it best when they described the band as a "hazy, beautiful mess." This crew is really worth [...]

Having already completed tours through the Midwest and Northeast, Von Iva is taking the show back on the road, this time headed back West. They have a new EP, Girls on Film , being released on June 5th and it'll be available starting at the Los Angeles show. Tour Dates 05/25: St. Louis, MO @ The Firebird 05/27: San Antonio, TX @ The Rock Bottom 05/28: Austin, TX @ Emo's 05/30: Dallas, TX @ Sue Ellen's Vixen Lounge 06/02: El Paso, TX @ Bombardiers [...]

Imagine the rock star: gleaming in sweat, yet irresistibly sexy and rebellious, vainly involved in their music, but sonically connected to their screaming fans. Calling someone a rock star is a generalization, yet connotes the aura of a certain swagger and musical grace or lack there of. Glasvegas on their first US tour have been opening their performances in the US with female bands like Von Iva or Ida Maria—issuing a comparison of female and male rock bands. On this Thursday night at the Great American Music Hall (GAMH) Von Iva and Glasvegas both performed like [...]
Glasgow, Scotland's Glasvegas rolled into the sold out Varsity Theater on Tuesday night behind a wall of hype, sound and blinding lights, and delivered a resounding, albeit polarizing 50 minute set full of earnest, retro-leaning songs in the bands first ever Minneapolis performance.

concert review : Glasvegas , Von Iva @ The Mod Club (Toronto, Ontario) - April 3, 2009 review to come <!-- Von Iva (San Francisco) - electro soul-rock, sort of like The Gossip, although stylistically, both visually and musically, although they trade in The Gossip's dance-punk angle, and play it with a glammier sheen. Even though they're from San Francisco, they sound L.A. to me, if that makes any sense. - not surprising perhaps that they've already appeared in a [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow , brought to you by Von Iva . Von Iva is a band out of San Francisco. It's 3 girls who have many descriptions for their music! I wonder which we'll define it as.We reviewed their recently released album, Girls On Film . This week Geoff is out of town so while he joined us in the live chatroom , he was not in studio. Instead, I had our good friend Sue come in for this chick-filled evening. [...]
For most of us, it's cold, snowy, and downright miserable outside. But in many respects, this week is also one of celebration. For one, we're currently taking in the sights and sounds of Chicago's Tomorrow Never Knows Festival , and if you've been reading our coverage, you'll know it's been unbelievably awesome. But that's really only the beginning, as in the coming hours and days, we'll be unveiling a few more goodies that would warm even the coldest of souls. So until then, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. TNK Fun: [...]

Von Iva creates their own brand of music by combining breakbeat cool with a dance punk attitude. Imagine Tina Turner singing over hammering dance beats and layers of synths. These ladies are turning out new and exciting music for people that aren't afraid to put Donna Summer, Joy Division and Jay Z back to back on a playlist. Von Iva first made a name for themselves thanks to their eye-popping, heart stopping live performances, and their rambunctious debut EP grabbed the attention of both critics and fans. Before they knew it this hard working, D.I.Y [...]

The ladies of Von Iva are back at it again! With their latest EP, Girls on Film , released at the end of October they are now headed home to celebrate it's release Friday at the Cafe du Nord . Download audio file (01-living-for-it.mp3) Von Iva - "Living for It" Not only do they have a new EP, but they will be appearing in "Yes Man" , the new Jim Carrey/Zooey Deschanel fim to be released in theaters December 19th [...]

Here's a tip for all movie producers. If you're looking to compose a solid soundtrack, it'd probably be a good idea to involve the Mark Oliver Everett, aka Eels , in some shape or form. After all, one look at the California native's theatrical resume ( Holes , Shrek , Hot Fuzz , just to name a few) and it's pretty obvious that aside from The Moldy Peaches, no one else has captured our hearts and filled our ears more on the big screen. So it should come as little surprise that the Everett [...]

This Sunday, it's the Folsom Street Fair , which San Franciscans will know isn't your average street party. "San Francisco has served – and continues to serve – as the global epicenter of sexual liberation for the adult alternative lifestyle community," write fair organizers, and this year marks the event's 25th anniversary. There are two stages bands at the street fest this year, including Bay Bridged interviewees Excuses for Skipping ( interview here ) and Von Iva ( [...]

So, I've been kinda stuck this week. There have been the usual fare of new bands and indie tracks, but I've been on a heavy diet of The Streets and Kings Of Leon. In fact, everything else has paled in comparison. Nevertheless, I managed to tear myself away last night, long enough to put this week's mixtape together. Of course, I've included favorite tracks off each previously mentioned album. I love Heaven For The Weather for the brilliant chorus: " I wanna go to heaven for the weather / and hell for the company / I wanna [...]

Song Shock of Pleasure ~ " Superstar " myspace plays: 2,250 download (via blouse. ) I don't usually post cover songs, especially when its a well known group like The Carpenters being covered, but this song caught me by surprise. The vocals are clean, the backing music is floaty, down-tempo, and layered, and it pays respect to the original without it sounding like a karaoke rendition. I'm looking forward to September, 16th when the Dallas [...]
