Todays song of the day is a tribute to the ephemeral state of good indie music. Today I simultaneously discovered Harlem Shakes and mourned their passingapparently back in 2009. This awesome alt rock band formed in 2006, released its first, very well received, album, Technicolor Health (a great name for an album), in 2009 and then disbanded that same year. I wondered what happened to Ramesh , formerly of Voxtrot . Personally, his songwriting was always really affecting, so I am glad to see he's getting back out there. Every now and then I have the daring curiosity to seek music from outside of my iPod's playlist. You see, I have a 32 GB version with most of it filled-up. Though, I almost never listen to half of what's on my entire playlist titled "Annihilation." The only reason to explain the name of the playlist is that I would die without the tunes in said playlist. Over the past few years plenty of bands have broken up or called it quits. Of all the bands that have done so, there is only one that I can say I was legitimately sad to hear about: Voxtrot. That music soundtracked hundreds of college memories and their songs are scattered across countless mix CDs I have laying around. Summer time is really in full swing! With the oppressive heat also come things like BBQs, beaches, picnics and summer jams. I've always felt astrange connection to Ramesh Srivastava. We've never met, but I did reviewhis band back in 2005 when he was touring under the name Voxtrot. It seems a shame that the Ramesh Srivastava-led Voxtrot were only able to complete a lone LP during their seven years; a tenure (fairly) definitively concluded via Srivastava's message to fans April 2010. While the page has turned on the once uber-hyped Austin outfit, Srivastava is back with a chapter all his own. You can hear some similarities with Los Campesinos and The Wedding Present in this Leeds based four-piece, but I can't get over the fact that they sound like what I wished Voxtrot would become. Catchy tales of indie-pop amor with close friends in This Is Not About Kat or those further away in The French Word For Love, but always exploring heartfelt joy and wonder.
