Favorite Folk Songs and Sleepytime Songs , the first two installments in the Peter Yarrow Songbook series, recently arrived in my house, and my children enjoyed them so much we've switched over to an all-folk format - at bedtime, at playtime, all day everyday by listener demand. It's validating to be asked to sing Golden Vanity to my child as she falls asleep, and a relief to put aside the Disney tunes and the circus polkas which generally fill the house. But Yarrow and his collaborators get [...]
Where to begin? I should start with the ornamental comb, like three white gleaming stakes from some Gnostic purification ritual, holding a jet-black stack of hair atop the fiery head of Polly Jean Har... Notes From Middle America is contributor Danny R. Phillips monthly column. You can read past installments here . In light of Touch and Go's recent decision to shut its doors, Bloodshot Records may not be Chicago Illinois' longest standing label, but at 15 years old, it might now be the "new" reference point for venerable Chicago indies for years to come. Founded in June of 1994 by Rob Miller and Nan Warshaw , the label is home to many acts and genres; [...]

Concert Review: The Sadies , Saturday, October 4, The Horseshoe , Toronto Saturday of Aimz: 1. Wake up at 11, hungover from too much Keith's . 2. Pull it together with the help of coffee and donuts. 3. Drive out to Scarborough to buy a new curling broom. (If this isn't the start of a Canadian country song, then I don't know what is.) 4. Drink 2.5 liters of water, eat half of a large tomato, mushroom, and [...]

Photo via YouTube Over the last couple years, some very cool stuff has been happening at the old Berkeley Church in Toronto, long converted from its original purpose as a house of worship to an event hall. My only experience was the totally insane show the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played there during the Film Festival last year and between being pummeled by the rest of the crowd and having Karen O scream in my face, I can confirm it's a lovely room. A room that, for the last [...]
In effort to raise awareness about upcoming releases as well as finding a place for the numerous submissions we get, this post continues our weekly purging of free and legal MP3's for your listening enjoyment. The number of tracks will fluctuate each week depending on the songs uncovered or sent. This week, we'll keep our offering SXSW related. Below, you'll find a wide array of artists playing in Austin today. MP3: Lyrics Born -"Hott To Deff" MP3: Bound [...]
Here's part two of some of the bands I hope to check out at SXSW this week... Disappear - My Brightest Diamond Pluto - Clare & The Reasons Restless - Langhorne Slim Crimewave - HEALTH Your Song - Kate Walsh The Girl - Dr. Dog I [...]
For more than a decade, these punk rockers on holiday have luxuriated in twanging pedal steel, stand-up bass and the rocking-est country barroom stomps ever delivered in a north English burr.
While recent reports show CD sales dwindling - if not nose-diving - you would hardly know that from the spate of new releases this week, faithfully compiled by Largehearted Boy . Must owns include: Steve Malkmus & the Jicks, Born Ruffians, The Gutter Twins, and What Made Milwaukee Famous. Also worth considering: Jim White, These United States, Cadence Weapon, Howlin' Rain, White Hinterland, and a whole lot more! And what? Bauhaus has a new album? And it's white? ... You had better run quickly and pick these up - the apocalypse approaches! Hopefully, there's still time, though, [...]
It's no secret that one of our favorite labels is Bloodshot Records out of Chicago. HearYa + BeerNuts will be one of the sponsors for their SXSW 2008 event, along with Shiner (as in free beer), TimeOut Chicago and The Yellow Tricycle Button Company. Bloodshot's lineup of American music is sure to put together a great beer drinking soundtrack for everyone. Swing on by and grab some super-classy beer koozies (as pictured below) and delicious beer nuts from the HearYa gang. Here's the lineup: [...]

Any big Mekons fans out there? They're another band I need to spend some quality time with. They were one of the bands that formed out of the 1977 British punk scene. Among the art students at the University of Leeds were Jon Langford, Kevin Lycett and Tom Greenhalgh. They formed the Mekons. Also forming out of the Leeds art school around that time were Gang of Four and Delta 5 . Jon Langford eventually settled in Chicago, and has been involved in a number of projects, most notably the Waco Brothers. [...]
It's the first Monday of the month, and that means it's time for another full album covered. Last month's Nevermind post was probably the most popular one I've done, so here's to hoping this keeps the momentum. This isn't one of Young's most famous albums, but it's my favorite. It's got the country groove, but with more balls than on Harvest . Plus, some of the songs are just badass. So here we go... Jeff Tweedy - Walk On [...]
