Traveling on the information superhighway, you are often forced to move at an autobahn worthy pace; hands gripping the wheel tight with eyes focused forward looking for potential pitfalls instead of enjoying the view. No matter how much you love a record, you need to find a new one for the next day or you have nothing to write about. Unfortunately, that means you almost never have the chance to reflect on what you see in the rear view or make a return trip to a town you wished you could have stayed in for a few extra days. [...]
There's lots of news coming out of The Wailin' Jennys camp these days. The Winnipeg folk rock trio with an awesomely clever name released a live album, Live At the Mauch Chunk Opera House earlier this year and are heading into the studio to record a new record. They'll follow that up with a tour in the spring. But wait, if that's not enough Heather Masse is poised to release her solo album,

So I am not one to shy away from my "roots" (no pun intended). So it is time to represent with some old school tunes (that aren't actually that old) - but the tracks are from one of my "hometown" bands, the Wailin' Jennys. I am a previous resident of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada ( I'm a "pegger" ) and the Jennys are definitely one of the best exports that the city has had (take that Burton Cummings). I always think that I even know them due to this. Despite never officially meeting Annabelle Chvostek, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth [...]
Sometimes to define a musical vision it can all come down to a live performance. For Canada's roots/folk trio The Wailin' Jennys , any doubt that they have what it takes to deliver a stunning concert set is forever erased with their third album Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House , due August 11 via Red House. Co-founders, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Ruth Moody and Nicky Mehta have joined with newcomer Heather Masse for [...]
I was born January 14, 1973, on the cusp of the disco age, and amidst the last true gasps of the sixties. Though my father's music was primarily blues and folk - the authentic, soulful stuff which I would return to in my own adulthood - for me, growing up in the eighties meant a childhood exposure to late Bee Gees and the early Michael Jackson, followed by a middle school passion for Howard Jones synthpop and Depeche Mode electronica; later, in my adolescence, I would turn to the growing anti-grunge movement like a dork to water, [...]

***Guest Blogger Alert, guest blogger alert!*** The very musically experimental Devendra Banhart has been a staple on the indie circuit for many years. He recently featured his ladylove Natalie Portman (and porn legend Ron Jeremy) in his music video for Carmensita from Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. Carmensita is styled like a 60's / 70's Bollywood movie and showcases a multilingual Devendra. Devendra's unique vocals turn even ordinary lyrics into a performance that truly stands alone. The pairing of Devendra and Natalie and the subsequent casting in the video may draw comparisons [...]

I have a love/hate relationship with Neil Young . While I've always loved his early work, both solo and with CSNY, as my ears and his voice age, I find it harder to listen to that infamous whine for more than a few minutes at a time. But ever since I wore a used copy of his incredible, confessional album Harvest down to the groove one mopey adolescent summer, I have had nothing but admiration for Neil Young's ability to pen poetic yet straightforward songs which give voice to the plight of the [...]

A lot of people went ga-ga over the " O' Brother Where Art Thou " soundtrack, partly because of the Gillian Welch , Alison Krauss & Emmylou Harris song. The Jennys are that trio AND the rest of the album. From the uptempo numbers to the beautiful ballad, these three ladies from the Great White north play and sing together in an angelic old-timey fashion. When founding member Cara Luft left The Wailin' Jennys, she was replaced by mandolinist Heather Masse . Hence the timing of the post. [...]

The Wailin' Jennys: Site | MySpace | Label (Red House) Sometimes I have to roam the Interwebs far and wide to find good music, and sometimes, it just falls in my lap. Yesterday I was just checking out my livejournal and I read a post in all-caps from Jesemie's Evil Twin. She's trying to tell us something, folks! It's a music emergency! Well, she was right. It's the Wailin' Jennys, and Canada once again can do no wrong (musically. They still have [...]
