For some reason I had the idea that Wake the President had broken up. You don't hear from a band for a couple years in these days of instant information and you assume the worst. Actually they kind of did disband sometime after releasing their first album You Can't Change that Boy in 2009. They may have temporarily disbanded but when the president and vice president are twins you regroup and make a second record anyway, and that is what Erik and Bjorn Sandberg did. The brothers have just released their second album Zumutung! [...]

This week's round up of the tracks that I haven't had the space to post... Victoria & Jacob From: London, United Kingdom Victoria and Jacob [...]

Have a listen to "Miss Tierney," an upbeat tune about a young man's fancy for and older bird. I am pretty sure that it's about jacking off in the shower. It is also an undeniably catchy tune.

the cult of glaswegian student-run record label electric honey was etched in music history in 1996 when it put out belle & sebastian's debut lp tigermilk , a record that sold out almost immediately and set the stage for the band's shy fairytale rise to fame. more than a decade later, it's heartening to know the label's still alive and kicking, and keeping to its tradition of releasing at least a record every year. this year, the band that graces electric honey's record sleeves is wake the president with you can't change that boy [...]

Something a little different for my blog. Usually, I stick to just the rarer songs by various bands I like. This time I'm going to try to hype an album that I've become addicted to as of late. Wake The President are a Scottish band whose debut album, You Can't Change That Boy , was recently released overseas, and is due to be released in The States in a couple weeks. They play a sort-of jangle pop with a thick (by my standards, anyway) Scottish [...]

It seems like nine times out of ten, I end up buying a CD at import prices because I can't wait, or have doubts that it will ever get released domestically. That is not the case with two excellent new albums that saw the light of day earlier this year over in old Europe. Patience has finally paid off with Cats On Fire and Wake the President making their domestic appearances this week. Is it serendipity or just dumb luck? No matter, we have two stellar west coast indies to thank for this godsend. So if you live in the [...]

Here ya go, something for the weekend. It's the March installment of the the Finest Kiss Basementcast. If this is going to become a regular thing, I guess I should get a theme song and some back ground music for the talking parts. A real microphone might be nice too, one of those big foamy ones would be perfect. Maybe I should get some advertisers too. Naah, I kind of like the furnace as my background noise, at least until I sell out. basementcast : download [...]
Wake The President - Professor It could be the intense Scotch accent but I'm finding it real hard to believe that Erik Sandberg hasn't lived through every word he sings on this record. (TANGENT: I would believe anything a Scottish person told me if they said it with a stack of reverb in, say, a mid-range male voice. BONUS TANGENT: Can you imagine if homie in Glasvegas had an American accent?) I'm not sure what the Glasgow press is saying about these gents but I bet it's got something to do with Belle & [...]

The main problem with using YouTube to watch live concerts featuring your favourite bands is that quality control is non-existent. So when you find that beloved Arcade Fire anthem reduced to a two-inch cameraphone screen being held by what seems like an Alzheimer's sufferer doing a Nazi salute, there's a good chance you'll be left feeling a tad underwhelmed. It goes without saying that you'd rather watch live music videos that were closer to a high-definition cinematic experience. It would also be nice if they were filmed by professionals using, say, a couple of dozen cameras simultaneously. And [...]

This year seemed to be the year in which the 73 single returned to prominence. It's not like it ever really went away, but this year bands and labels were putting them out left a right. Vinyl in general, is making a resurgence with the prevalence of file downloading a cd is just a lousy digital copy that takes up too much space, whereas a slab of vinyl is more like a work of art with it being big enough to actually appreciate the cover art. It also comes in many shades, with colored vinyl showing up almost as much [...]

What do Belle & Sebastian , Snow Patrol and Biffy Clyro all have in common (apart from being three of the most popular bands to come out of Scotland's music scene in the past decade)? The answer is that before virtually anyone had even heard of them, they all brought out one-off releases on Electric Honey , the record label run by music industry management students at Glasgow's Stow College. Each year the students sift through dozens of [...]
It's been 24 years since Orange Juice called it a day after releasing the very underrated The Orange Juice album. Along the way a few bands have payed tribute to this seminal Scottish band. Blueboy named themselves after an OJ song and Belle and Sebastian in their early DIY roots claimed them as an influence. [...]
