Last month The Walls played a few gigs in The Czech Republic and Vienna in preparation for releasing thier third album as The Walls. Details are patchy as to when that album will be released but as soon as I know, it will appear here! This acoustic version of their big hit should brighten up anyone's world! [...]

After Elliott Smith 's suicide in October 2003, fans began to pay homage to the artist they loved so much in Silver Lake on Sunset Boulevard where Smith posed for the cover of his 2000 album, Figure 8 (below). It became a place where people from all over came to sign their names, write poetry and pay their respects. I made a trip out to Silver Lake to see my brother a few weeks ago, so I had to go to the wall. That's me above. I tried to emulate the Figure 8 cover, but [...]

Pink Floyd is taking their long term record label, EMI to court; suing the label for allegedly miscalculating royalty payments on their back catalog. The band has filed a lawsuit against EMI, whom they have been with since 1967, for owed royalties they never received from the sales of their back catalog over the years. Neither the band nor the label has not commented on the amount of money in question, but since the success of the band's Dark Side of the Moon and The [...]

Recently at work, we got into a discussion about U2. The gist of it was basically whether or not U2 is a musically worthwhile band. During the conversation I found myself making statements like, "Well, it depends what U2 you're talking about. If it's the current album, well then, they're absolutely rubbish. But Joshua Tree was legit." Or "J oshua Tree is a classic album, so that makes U2 circa-1987 an important band." About three days later, I realized that I've never actually listened to The Joshua Tree . The history of U2 has been ingrained into [...]
The Wall Brothers (also known as The Walls or The Stunning) opened for Bell x1 last night, and used a good bit of digital trickery to replace their lost drummer as well as to keep the crowd captivated. I expected drummer Rory (who is now Bell x1's percussionist) to make an appearance for at least one tune, but this sadly wasn't the case. The duo did do a good job replacing him with a video on the screen behind them as well as a fancy drum machine (read: laptop). This wouldn't have been all that much in itself apart from [...]
Opening for Bell x1 at Vicar Street last night: Headlong Dead Flowers Thanks for the Photographs Bright Shining Sun New Song (Change?) Burn the Cage Deep

The blogsphere is a great place to wonder around on special occasions such as Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Christmas and St. Patricks Day. Here are the best blog posts I found celebrating Irish Music on the net: http://coverlaydown.com/ finds Boyhowdy celebrating the folkier side of U2 with a post of U2 covers by folk artists. Find tunes by Luka Bloom, Bell X1, The Walls and many more. http://troubledsoulsunite.blog spot.com/ is a great Pearl Jam inspired blog. The blog contains tunes by Thin Lizzy, The Pogues and Flogging Molly. [...]

In introducing last year's surprisingly popular St. Patrick's Day entry on the folkier side of Sinead O'Connor , I noted that I had almost exhausted my collection of U2 covers. Since then, however, discovery and a surprisingly rapid pace of coverage have widened the playing field of potential, making for a lovely set. So raise a glass, and let's begin. It's St. Pat's, and the folk is flowing. I came to U2 too late to be [...]
The inspirations gig was an excellent showcase of Irish talent and was a great night. I was massively impressed with most of the bands who gave up their time free of charge in aid of the wonderful charity Barretsown for sick children. The highlights for me were: Ham Sandwich - Running Up That Hill The Walls - Everything is Broken The Kinetics - I Will Follow

I know my last post was discouraging to some of you, and I would just like to say that we have been really touched by the kind things some of you have said and even done. Thank you all for that - it means a great deal. In case you were wondering, all is not lost. Today, for example, was a great day. No tantrums, meltdowns, flung toys or insults. In fact, it was quite nice. I could really go for more days like this one. Perhaps it was the weather - [...]

By this stage now have you had enough of U2? If not here's a bit more. In the recent weeks I have seen The Walls twice in the charity gigs with The Swell Season and in the Inspirations gig last Friday. I have been blown away by how good they are and the new songs they played are signs of an excellent radio friendly album on the way this year. They make U2's With or Without You their own song which appeared on the comilation Even Better Than The Real Thing Vol.3. [ Buy on Amazon ] The [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. In an op-ed for the NY Times , Emily Oberman and Bonnie Siegler argue for the creation of a Best Title Design Oscar. If anyone has frequented The Art of Title Design , then this is a suggestion that makes sense. Title design is an integral part of a movie - bringing the audience into the filmmakers world, setting up characters and plot, etc. One can accomplish a great deal with either the opening or closing credits to a movie. We would like [...]

This amazing gig in The Acadamy could quite possibly be the most advertised gig in Ireland ever! The line-up is wonderful and to be honest almost all acts appearing could easily fill the venue by themselves. However this is a covers night for charity where we can expect songs by David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan sung by our best Irish artists and Fun Loving Criminals. In celebration of this gig I have a cover by the headliner Sinéad O'Connor. Sinéad has sung songs by Kurt Cobain, Cole Porter, Lee Perry and of course Prince who penned the [...]

Any regular reader of this blog would see I'm a massive fan of all things Glen and Mark Dignam. I knew that The Swell Season charity gig would be special, but it was so much much more important for those in attendance. It almost felt like a mini cultural uprising. Not a revolution but the seeds of a badly needed cultural revolution in these parts. Not only are Glen and Mark planting seeds but we have Sean [Dr.] Millar playing gigs and planning releases, the Ruby Sessions back in full swing and with the recent gigs by Terry Sutton the [...]

Tomorrow night kicks off a season of Charity Gigs in the Capital. In light of the recession this may well be the best way to see your favourite bands in the future. Lets face it, going to a great gig is much better than signing up to a direct debit for life! Fair play to the bands taking part! Thursday 5th Feb: The Swell Season, Paul Noonan, Carly Sings, Liam Ó Maonlaí and Mark Dignam! Jack L, Munday and The Waterboys have been added to the following gigs for Gaza! [...]
