Weathered, literary songs from a weathered, literary soul. Walter Rose's first full-length album finds the shadow-voiced singer dealing up just over 10 tracks of subtle, heartfelt tunes. At times recalling a young Steve Forbert, the Hawaii native keeps things simple and warm during "When You Were Mine", "Times Are Hard" and "Driving South". With tinges of country and world music weaving into each other, Rose alternates between desolate and downtrodden with doses of celebration tucked into places unforeseen. Lucinda Williams turns up for...

Aaaaand... we're back. After a slow start to the year, this week provides a relative bounty of new releases, including the latest from London-based group The Duke Spirit , who, according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "add a bit more studio polish and musical sophistication to their bluesy psych-rock sound on their third album, a solidly crafted set ranging from tension-filled rockers to atmospheric ballads." Fellow Brits The Big Pink also drop a new album, their second, and if their super-catchy single "Stay Gold" is any indication, it's going to be full of hooky, fuzzy dance-pop [...]

Over the last 25 years or so, the term country music became something of a joke for those who searched a little deeper for the music they listen to. Somewhere after the movie Urban Cowboy , country music became less about telling the story of the common man and more a commodity being sold to the masses at your local Wal-Mart. Recently, we have seen a shift in country music towards what made the likes of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Loretta Lynn icons in American culture. Movies like Walk [...]

Already on heavy rotation, this album is recommended for post-stress relaxation or some good old fashioned romantic reflection!!.. Modern Country or [...]
