Halloween, for many people and many different reasons, is one of the best holidays the year can offer. Aside from consciously creating cavities, the eve of All Hallows Day has transformed into (nearly) a week's worth of reasons to dress up in something bizarre and go out and have fun. It would make perfect sense to find some "spooky" songs or some "haunting" stories to please your senses, but why not do the obvious? I could just combine a list of Clay Aiken and Paris Hilton tracks and go "BOO!" to the same effect, [...]
while flipping through last week's onion , i was a little disappointed when i came upon the a.v. club's 14 songs about vampires feature & didn't see neil young's "vampire blues", from his 1974 masterpiece on the beach listed...yeah, i guess the song's really about oil, but it's got the word vampire in the title, so i thought i'd post it here for halloween...the blogosphere has been crawling with halloween related songs for the past week or so , a couple sites like ghost town & [...]

Eights days until all hallow's eve. Halloween is a pretty funny holiday. The idea of dressing up and become another persona is an interesting idea. It stirs up a million questions. Do people pick costumes subconsciously because of some desire to take on another role? (I honestly have NO desire to be a sumo wrestler!) Is it for just comedy's sake? Are they dressing up as Raggedy Andy because the significant other is insisting it will look "cute"? How about those "Hooters" guys? (You know the 4 guys that wear [...]

Since my rent is going up $400 in December, the following resonates greatly with me. As long as it's in the name of art... : 1 room, no view PROVIDENCE — Eight artists snuck into the depths of Providence Place mall and built a secret studio apartment in which they stayed, on and off, for nearly four years until mall security finally caught their leader last week. The story of their audacious stunt — they call it performance art — spilled out in District Court, after [...]
This Friday marks four years since Warren Zevon's death at the young age of 56 from cancer--a form associated with exposure to asbestos, not from smoking. Zevon was barely past his teens when he began playing with music legends the Everly Brothers and writing songs with 60's popstars the Turtles. His first album, Wanted Dead or Alive was released in 1969. He is probably best-known for "Werewolves of London" and "Lawyers, Gun, and Money" from 1978's Excitable Boy , and I know that's when I first became aware of him. During [...]
A couple of months after the chain went bust with the loss of hundreds of jobs, Fopp Manchester re-opened at the weekend and, despite the fact that the Manchester store and stores in Glasgow, Cambridge, Nottingham and Edinburgh, were bought up by corporate giants HMV, it was pretty much business as usual when we were in there yesterday. Stocks seemed a bit low with no vinyl yet and plenty of empty jewel cases padding out the racks, plus we were unable to find the new Richard Hawley and New Pornographers CDs, but I'm sure this is only a temporary thing. [...]

This Conversation - Submarines The Democrats had their second debate two nights ago. I messed up with time zones so didn't start watching until pretty late, but thanks to the magic of the internets I managed to fill in the holes. And there were some interesting things going on. Most importantly, it actually seemed to include some components of a, well, debate. Back-and-forths on ideas, some slightly wonky disagreements, and so on. Sure, there was the usual political pageantry but at times the soul of the Party really shone through, and I [...]

Here are the mp3s as promised last week, if you checked out part 1, you can just skip down to the songs... hope you find something you like. I've been a fan of magazines since I was around ten or eleven years old. And most of my magazine money over the many years has gone towards music mags, my first subscription to a music magazine being Rolling Stone. But this was back when RS still had some bite, I think it was around 1974 when it began showing up in the mailbox. Now the [...]

This may be my all-time favorite mix. A perfect blend of acoustic guitars and piano, all mellow in mood. All album ending tracks. Perfect to play before bed. I may post v1.0; but it's not as good. Working on v3.0… keep your sleepy eyes peeled. 1 ~ Michael Gulezian: Golgotha 2 ~ Kaki King: My Insect Life 3 ~ Joe Henry: Scar 4 ~ Cassandra Wilson: Harvest Moon 5 ~ Kathleen Edwards: Sweet [...]

Are you taking a trip soon, a long drive to visit the relatives for the holidays? Looking for some good tunes for the road? Let Gramma help. This batch of road trip tunes has a little bit of country flavor that makes you think of wide vistas and open roads. Country songs are good for driving, as long-distance truckers will attest. In 1985, Pegi Young (Neil's lady) helped to start a school in the San Francisco Bay Area for local children with severe physical and speech impairments (their son Ben is affected by cerebral palsy). The Bridge School helps to remove expressive barriers for these children through augmentative and alternative means of communication with the world around them. The nice thing about being associated with a respected member of the musical community is that The Bridge School received the seed money needed to open, as well as ongoing financial support for the last 20 years, [...]
