Do you remember how Sufjan Stevens once claimed that he would record an album of songs based around each of the 50 states? Well, he's since admitted the concept was merely a "promotional gimmick" that he has since moved on from. Strangely, I think of that when I try to figure out exactly what has happened with chillwave in the past year. Most of the genre's top artists have released, or will soon release, their sophomore albums, and I'm struck but how different these albums are from one another. Sure there are still many similarities, but there are some pretty [...]

Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed (Grimes Remix) Washed Out (featuring Caroline Polachek) - You And I

After releasing two EPs in a row in 2009 ( Life of Leisure & High Times ), Washed Out took a bit of time off to work on some new material for his debut album. Well, judging by the quality of his last single, the break really paid off! "Eyes Be Closed", the single posted a few weeks ago as a free download, retains Washed Out's signature chillwave sound, with gently pulsing Balearic beats, synths galore and somber, filtered vocals. Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed Ernest Greene, the [...]

It's a fair assumption that Ernest Greene , a.k.a. Washed Out , got some awesome press after his song became the opening theme to Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein's Portlandia . It also looks like Sub Pop Records was watching, because now they've added Greene to their roster of artists. Thanks to this awesome record deal, his debut LP, Within and Without , will be out July 12! With some help from Deerhunter and Animal Collective producer Ben Allen , [...]

It's time for the Redthreat Best Songs of 2010. All personal opinion, of course. These are the ones that moved me the most. It was an incredibly strong year for Greyzone production, and was certainly one where I opened up to Indie Rock way more than previous years. I'd love to hear your responses. 01. Hackman - Always [ The Always EP ] 02. Les Savy Fav - Let's Get Out [...]

We rarely delve into the historic archives of East Coast Hip-Hop - and apparently it's good to diversify, so here she blows. Last Wednesday I was lucky enough to catch a rare live performance from the legendary MF Doom . Here's the report fresh from the crime scene... Once again Manchester’s masses were summoned by the almighty Warehouse Project, where a much anticipated ‘Doomsday’ awaited us, with the promise of on e of America’s most eponymous emcees awaiting us in the sidelines. Judging by the bulk turnout of northern brimmed flat peaks, it [...]

New track from Ernest Green aka Washed Out . Dude comes across as a real down to earth. If you haven't his Life of Leisure EP is phenomenal. By adding crunchy danceable beats these artists have sweetened the "shoegaze" explorations of the 80's & 90's and have pushed the sonic reverberations further than ever. Chillwave kind of reminds of some sort of mix between Boards of Canada, The Beach Boys, 1970's AM radio (ex. 10CC), and The Cure. Because of its close association with the "shoegaze" sound (see my previous post ) Chillwave has hit me like some sort of warm midsummer t-storm and I can't get enough of it. Up until recently I found it fairly easy too [...]
MP3: Washed Out- You and I

It’s pretty neat when that overwhelming feeling of warmness comes over you when you accomplishing something. For me this tends to happen when I hear a song that makes me shiver. The track is You and I by Washed Out , and features the very talented Caroline Polachek. Together the two come together to create something unreal. More great tracks are listed on Washed Out's myspace - take a gander there and then check him out on the Kitsune Maison Compilation 9 album available here . [...]

Above picture, you ain't never lie (you am not ever lie?). Sorry about the extended delays in posting, inconsistency if you may. Summer has been a hectic mamma jamma, which is unexpected to be honest. Nonetheless, I have for you two, count em, two pieces of instrumental emotion. First is Memory Tapes' Run Out ; the feeling of "curiousity" is sprinkled all over. And oh, oh, Washed Out's You And I featuring Caroline Polachek is one of those songs I would put a picture of [...]
