Today we flash back on another of our favourite labels: SUB POP RECORDS . They're responsible for the careers of a diverse range of bands, from Nirvana to Dum Dum Girls to our very own Husky . And they're celebrating 25 years in the business on July 13. That means that they've been around since 1988. Before that founder Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop about American independent artists and their labels. He started releasing compilations [...]

An effervescent slice of electronic pop, Swimming Lessons meanders pleasantly through debut single, "Double". The percussion resonates as carbonated, an ever-rising loop of chiming sounds and loops - a snare sound for organizational purposes only - mixed with Ben Lewis charming, echoing vocal. The Leeds outfit gives hints of the Clock Opera empire that never was, and windows to the better sides of Ernest Greene's work in Washed Out. None of it necessarily aims for the ceiling. "Double" gives little hint of unchecked ambitions, rather a frictionless slow-drive through electro-pop tropes that sound as [...]

Small Black: Limits of Desire - Upon listening to the new release from Small Black , the first and most prominent word that comes to mind is "ethereal". The new album, Limits of Desire , is like classic Small Black but dreamier. The band has evolved and drawn from various influences to give fans something new that is still true to their sound. The new album is laid-back and calm without being safe or boring. Josh Kolenik and the other members have clearly taken note from chillwave acts like Washed Out as well as [...]

By Colin Joyce The summer of '09 feels like a long time ago thanks, in no small part, to the forces that dominated the blog rock of the day. A legion of 20-year-olds with moppy haircuts, a couple of synths and a pirated copy of Ableton live took the internet by storm. Or maybe it was just a drizzle. There was certainly something about it that felt torrential, but that could have easily been the reverb or the oversaturation of the field. It was known by at least a couple of aliases, hastily [...]

Meet Cory Thomas Hanson - the music extraordinaire that is behind the project W.H.I.T.E . Making shaken up pop music through his experimenting, Hanson's solo project is one for those of you who are heavily into dense, fanatical production. Hanson started W.H.I.T.E in the American Summer of 2008 as a solo recording project that substituted his usual Summer art school attendance. Having been around for five years, this bedroom project festooned into a big deal, as he has toured his music internationally and is set to release his third [...]

The well of music video ideas is somewhat limited, and three decades after the advent of MTV, it's interesting to see the themes that have recurred again and again over the years. One of the more enduring conceits, curiously enough, has been the workout video, either rendered in parodic style or played completely straight. We're not entirely sure why this is — perhaps because, stereotypically, musicians aren't generally the ones who enjoy gym class, or perhaps the curiously sexualized imagery of the fitness video provides rich material for satire and also for commentary on our society. In any case, the [...]
