DC's blues rock duo The Grey Area (who repped DC at SxSW this year) are gonna make big noise this Friday, 4/20 at the Red Palace with tracks from their debut EP 508 , featuring doses of Inspector Gadget and twangy Kiss-like licks. Check out the video for "Ourselves" below, also found on the EP. And sharing the stage with them is Brooklyn's indie rock band Midnight Spin who were NYC Deli's Best Emerging Artist of 2009! Therefore a night of full on rock noise will ensue! 4/20 @ Red Palace, Doors @ [...]

This Thursday, head to H St. for some genuine melodic indie rock via DC locals East Ghost , who are hitting the Red Palace stage to play tracks off their early 2012 release St. Elizabeths. They'll also be revealing some new material, and merch (they've got some adorable coasters!) St. Elizabeths by East Ghost Joining them is DC's own indie pop Teen Mom , who've got a beachy vibe that'll amp you up for the summery weekend. 4/19 @ Red Palace. Doors @ 8, $8. You [...]
Last Friday night, Dahlgren Quad was full of couples in tuxes and gowns snapping photos on their way to Dip Ball. And they were lucky that we dragged DC's own Lightfoot outside to set up shop on top of the fountain for some impromptu serenading. Led by the strong voice of singer-songwriter Jessica Louise Dye, Lightfoot pared down its numbers to a folky, earnest sound with just a couple of guitars and a trumpet-accompanied also at points by the bells from Healy's clock tower and many, many planes en route to Reagan. Take a listen to four originals as well [...]

If local indie pop/rock and post-punk is what you crave on 4/20, then get ready to get your ears' munchies on at the Rock & Roll Hotel this Friday. The quadruple line-up features Dance for the Dying , who are about to set out on tour in May (this is their last hometown headliner before taking off.) The Silver Liners will be there too, who are currently in the studio working on new material. Also check out We Were Pirates who've recently released their second album Change . And Tomio will [...]

Icelandic folkies Of Monsters and Men took the DC area by storm earlier this month, playing not once but twice. The first was an intimate artists showcase in the afternoon sponsored by a local radio station, and the second was later that evening at Black Cat. The evening started off with fellow Icelander Lovísa Sigrúnardóttir, who plays under the name Lay Low. While her voice had a bit of a wispy little girl quality that I often find tiresome, she kept enough force behind it with her aggressive playing and [...]

The Onion AV Club nailed it when they described DC's indie psyche sludge post-punk trio Caustic Casanova as "uniquely brainy hard rock, heavy yet clever in a Torche meets Dismemberment Plan kind of way." That sound clearly eminates on their recent release Someday You Will Be Proven Correct (Mad Love Records) with 12 tracks drawing in numerous elements of rock. If Jackass comes back around with another sequel, then "Hail Fellow Well Met" should be included on the soundtrack as it sounds like the lovechild of CKY and H.I.M. at times, and kinda makes [...]

Yeah, you read that right. All Things Go and Neon Gold Records are bringing 17 year old French DJ sensation Madeon (along with the District's best, Lightwaves ) to U Hall. Not much else to say here other than watch the YouTube video that started it all if you haven't yet and buy your tickets to his DC debut now before the show sells out. This'll probably be your only chance to catch him at this intimate of a venue. Join us on May 16th at U Street Music Hall. Advance tickets [...]

From April 19th - 29th, the No Kings Collective and Popal Group will host the Water St. Project , a pop-up space along the water in Georgetown that will showcase some of the best art, culture and music that DC and beyond has to offer. On Friday, April 27th we'll be taking over the space and curating a night of fantastic music. On the decks we're bringing in Penguin Prison - who aside from being an amazing live act opening for Miike Snow the next night at the 9:30 club has some impressive DJ chops - and [...]

Every now and then we and our partners in crime at Neon Gold Records get the opportunity to bring an artist down to DC so special that it's impossible not to break our usual schedule. In February, it was Chiddy Bang. This month, it's Alex Winston . The Detroit songstress has been spending a lot the of the past year serenading the Brits overseas. Her record release party in New York last night marked her first show there in a year. Crazy, right? Well we're making sure the District gets a taste of the fun and hosting a performance [...]

The Temper Trap made a triumphant return to DC after two years when they co-headlined with Florence and the Machine. Sadly for the Temper Trap, that night was Florence Welch's second-ever performance in the United States, and it overshadowed the Aussie band. (Read the review of that gig here ). This gig was nothing like that. Supporting them was New York-based Penguin Prison. An electro-pop band, I was curious as to the combination of them and the Temper Trap, but it worked really quite [...]

Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Soderberg – better known by their stage name First Aid Kit – have never played Washington DC before, until late last month. Their first visit was thwarted by a freak accident: in October 2010 I saw Casiokids and Delphic play fun dance parties at DC9 and expected to see First Aid Kit the week after, but after a still unexplained death outside the club, the venue was shuttered for weeks and the girls were forced to cancel. Nearly a year and a half [...]

Arlington VA's indie rockers Pet Parade are a name we here at the Deli have seen listed on nearly every venue around the DMV lately, so it's no wonder they were voted as our Band of the Month. We wanted to find out more about the guys that make up Pet Parade (Patrick Jones, Marco Morales, Mark AC, and Blaine Misner) so we got a hold of Patrick who filled us in on their upcoming recording, synth pop roots, and the love for local supporting venues. Now onto the interview... Catch [...]

Warner Theater in the heart of downtown DC - read: ghastly dead after normal working hours and on the weekends - usually puts on shows of a genteel nature. Christmas productions of the Nutcracker come to mind, for example; it started out as a vaudeville and silent film house. But every once in a while, their staff will open its doors to put on rock shows of a higher calibre: think David Byrne and Morrissey , two acts I'd seen there previously. Last Wednesday night, it played host to one half of the most contentious partnerships [...]

DC's post punk pop band Dot Dash have unleashed a new video for the track "Learn How To Fly" from their album Spark Flame Ember Ash . They've also made the track available for free download here . Check them out live this Friday 4/6 at the Artisphere for the Chickfactor Magazine 20th Anniversary show with Stevie Jackson (Belle & Sebastian), Frankie Rose (Slumberland), and Honeybunch (ex-Velvet Crush.)

Those well-versed in the ways of DC indie rock have come across Mercies at one point or another. My first experience with the band - made up of guitarist John Russell, bassist Justin Hunter Scott and drummer Ezra Finney - was at a house show in Petworth a month back, where they won me over pretty quickly with their sweat-drenched garage rock. Mercies' new EP, This Is Not About Control , captures the trio's energy in full lo-fi glory. Those of you living in the District should mark May 11th on your calendars, [...]

"We've waited a long time for this," said a grinning, Russell Marsden, the long-haired, don't take crap from no-one guitarist of Band of Skulls. He was probably referring to them finally headlining a show in Washington (my friends have advised me that they have played in DC before, supporting Metric - you work that one out), but equally as momentous for the Southampton band was selling out the venerable 9:30 Club for what was sure to be a Saturday night to remember. Even support band We [...]
In case you were living under a rock this past week, you'd know that Winter Music Conference/Miami...

Outlook // Our Time Is Now The aesthetic of the DC hardcore scene of the 1980's is alive and well in the form of young bands like Outlook . It's easy to hear the influences on this band's collective sleeve, but they bring a measure of energy and vitality to the genre that is all too rare. On top of that the band prides itself on being a positive influence in the hardcore scene and that is something that surely goes a long way. With lyrics about social justice [...]

You might be able to chalk it up to the unseasonably mild weather we've been having in this so-called Washington 'winter'. Or the fact that the show was on a Friday night. Make no mistake, the Postelles descended on Washington DC like gods from heaven and their show just further emphasised their loyal fanbase in the Nation's Capital. I can scarcely believe that I first saw them as relative newbies to the scene in March 2010, opening for the where-are-they-now Portland band Hockey, and how far they've come in just 2 [...]
