Emerging bands and artists with official videos, INDMUSIC and The Deli Magazine are teaming up to find the best unsigned and independent music videos to be featured between sets during their Lower East Side showcases at this year's CMJ Music Marathon (October 18-22, 2011). If your band has a video, we want to see it! We're looking for cool concepts, stunning visual aesthetics, and, of course, great tunes! On top of this, the videos and music will be reviewed in print in the upcoming fall issue of The [...]

Even though I was a bit too young to fully enjoy the music of the '80s back in the day, it doesn't mean I don't have a deep respect and love for the music being made back then. Really, I'm a New Waver at heart. Seeing OMD in March reminded me how great the music from that era was and just how timeless it is. So it seemed logical that the next band on my list was Erasure , who are currently touring North America. (The duo plus their [...]

Bands that play at DAR Constitution Hall are a big deal. They don't play this massive venue, a mere stone's throw from the Capitol building, because they sold only a couple thousand records. This is the big time. So last Thursday, I was lucky enough to get the call to cover the Script playing a gig there, rescheduled from a previous date from June that was postponed due to illness. This was the first gig that I have covered whilst standing atop an unsheltered platform with no railing. I'm [...]

Just a couple weeks ago, DC based rock quartet Megaphone Barons released their debut EP Menagerie , no doubt sending a plethora of new fans to their aid as they were voted our Band of the Month. So we conversed via the interwebs with Christopher Lewis (guitar, vocals), Tim Preston (Drums), Dan Davydoff (violin) and Adam Marlowe (bass) to find out more about the Sonic Youth inspired bunch that include cool instruments like the accordian and violin in the mix. Here they dish out their thoughts on the DC music scene, the underrated, and international inspiration. [...]

DC's Deleted Scenes have unleashed their sophomore LP Young People's Church of the Air this month and it's probably the coolest album to come out in years that equally balances spacing out with head bobbing. Oh yes, Daniel Scheuerman (guitar, vocals), Matt Dowling (bass, keyboard), Dominic Campanaro (guitar, keyboards, samples), and Brian Hospital (drums) are on to something, and each track on this showcases it's own concoction of genre morphing and a blend of home vs studio recording. Some fav's include the first single "Bedbedbedbedbed." It's insanely infectious with a dreamy soundscape, wrapping [...]
![Washington releases debut album 'I Believe You Liar' + UK tour dates [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3700436_lg.jpg)
Washington 's debut album 'I Believe You Liar' , released 7th November on Mercury Records , is a bristling, angry record that highlights the intense, almost unbridled passion that goes into Washington's work. It's a raw, emotional record, acerbic, highly literate pop music, shot through with an incredible honesty. Throw in a highly accomplished pop sensibility and you have one of the most exciting new female voices to emerge this year. Post-punk and new wave influences abound, with musical nods to the likes of Blondie, whilst having the lyrical chops that a young Elvis Costello might [...]

On top of being voted DC Deli's August Band of the Month, the alternative trio Atlas recently released a dope music video for the track "Shotgun" from their recently recorded demo currently making circulation. So we wanted to know more about what they are all about. EJ Morgan (Guitar/Vocals), Andrew Vilar (Bass/Vocals), and John Schaffer (Drums) have collectively come together to spill it on alternative inspiration, a chaotic high school performance, and the 'tons' to come in the future. Full interview here ... Catch Atlas live at the Velvet Lounge on Wednesday Sept. [...]
Following the April U.S. release of a five-track sampler How to Tame Lions via Universal Republic, Aussie art-popstress Washington gets the full rollout of her witty, theatrical 2010 full length I Believe You Liar on October 11. We haven't seen the final U.S. track listing for Liar yet, but we'll make the assumption that her new song (and over the top video) "Holy Moses" will make an appearance. We'll revisit our original posting for the album as we get closer to release, but for now fasten your satin [...]
![SBTRKT - Wildfire Ft. Shabazz Palaces (Drumma Boy Remix) [Mp3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3686550_lg.jpg)
Admittedly, despite being a big fan of the original "Wildfire" cut and of SBTRKT 's self-titled debut record in general, I was not a fan of the initial remix with a certain Young Money artist that made rounds around the hype music blogs several times over. Luckily for me, there's the recently released Drumma Boy cut of the wonky track with the mysterious hip-hop collective Shabazz Palaces . The group, which is the first rap act to be signed by the venerable Seattle indie label Sub Pop Records , features Digable Planets member Ishmael Butler (now referred to as the [...]

Attention all Washington, D.C. earthquake survivors! I know you're all still in post traumatic stress disorder induced drunken stupors / hangovers at this point, but listen up! There is a remedy. You know as well as I do that the best possible cure for this madness is tables and tables full of delicious baked goods! And you, D.C., are in luck, rumor has it that a bake sale is brewing! Oh, and, while you use this bake sale induced sugar high to cope with your unshakable (get it? earthquake? shakable? ahhh, forget it) fear of aftershocks, you can [...]
Tweet I don't mind if it's a hoax and I'm willingly falling into a trap with this end of the summer anthem. The mellow vocals combining with the soft beats create the perfect ambiance for a romantic evening. The kaleidoscopically artwor k is by band member Lionel Williams of Vinyl Williams . The band itself is situated in Tacoma, Washington and has been making explorations in music for a couple of years now, and if I may quote from their own lyrics, it doesn't get better than this. [...]
"Baltimore's synth-pop romantics Future Islands are pleased to announce, "Balance," the second single off their upcoming full-length On The Water , available October 11th, 2011 on Thrill Jockey . This time they indulge in the soft sounds of ocean swells quietly rushing the beach followed by driving basslines and glittery keys as they anticipate the tide crashing against the shore." -Courtesy of Thrill Jockey. Check out the track below, it's gorgeous!!! (Photo by Elena Johnston.)

DC's indie rock trio Megaphone Barons have just released their debut EP Menagerie, with 6 tracks showing their range from garage to worldly elements. Chris, Tim, and Daniil originally performed together with 4 other guys in Perfect Substitutes, a grad school cover band, back in 2009 before taking their new formation on the road around the globe- no doubt having some impact on what they sound like now. The release party is this Wednesday 8/24 at Club Heaven and Hell, and if you purchase the EP by the 23rd, via their bandcamp site, then [...]

The Baltimore/DC/Italy hybrid band that is Bravenoise have been voted your Band of the Month for August, and we were wondering what made these guys bring their rock to a "make it funky!" level! So we riled together the dudes behind the noise, Andrew Bell, Andrea Spadafora, and Garron Marsh, to find out. Here they spill it on the awesomeness of girlfriends, Craigslist, and good Italian espresso. On to the interview... Bravenoise's debut Everything Was and Everything Will Be is available now on iTunes. Check out the songs live at several [...]

Bands in The Deli World (i.e. the 11 local US scenes we cover ), Like ever year, The Deli is going to give some of you the opportunity to play at one of our CMJ parties. This year we have booked 4 shows in the Lower East Side, see flier for the list of shows and venues. We are looking to book 3 or more artists for these official CMJ shows - last year we ended up booking more than 10 from the submissions!!! [...]

Words and photos by Cheryl Demas "The boys of summer": New York’s Fountains of Wayne could have borrowed that moniker from Don Henley when they played the Birchmere on Monday night. Not only were many of the songs actually about summer, but they repeatedly introduced songs as “being about summer”, continuing the joke through the entire set. The venue, which bills itself as “America’s Legendary Music Hall”, was full of framed memorabilia and families. The crowd was largely couples in their 40s and families with children. [...]
Death By Sexy. It's a powerful name for a rockin trio that came together in DC back in 2005. When Dex Fontaine (drums/vocals) and Jason Griffenhagen (guitar/vocals) had a chance encounter with Eagles of Death Metal's Jesse Hughes at a Black Cat pinball machine, their name was spawned. After Christian Baldo (bass/vocals) joined, the rock sensation was in full force, bringing with them an edge of humor so desperately needed in this town. Here they get down and tell us about the wonderful world of Spotify, performing at Gallaudet, Uncle Jesse, and the importance of Dex's family. On [...]

At last, one of the most anticipated releases that we've been waiting for is finally here!!! And holy hell was it worth the wait. DC's dark rockers, the Chance , are releasing their 6 track EP New York City Girls on Aug 24th, and we've got an advance copy and are very very stoked to share our thoughts on this album we've been hearing about since late 2010. As a duo, guitarist/singer Joshua Padgett (bass on album as well) and drummer Viraj DeSilva worked in NYC with famed producer Chuck Brody (Phanotgram, Yoko Ono) and mastered [...]
