I think I want to preface this by saying a few words about the band and their music. It's very polarizing. It's polarizing to me sometimes. Phish is not an easy sell to a lot of people, and I just wanted to say I'll try to post 3 new updates to compensate (!) However, with that being said, there is a LOT of music out there that doesn't have a millionth of the guts and depth that Phish bring to the stage. OK. That's enough. SO.... My favorite Phish show of the summer [...]

Washington venues have suffered in the last 2 decades - a bunch of clubs have closed or changed for the worse, and there really aren't that many great, small places bands can play. I can however vouch for the great DC9, which sports a small but cozy gigging space on its second floor. This is the venue that played host to the Phenomenal Handclap Band , Daniel Collas and Sean Marquand 's musical vision put in a live setting. Besides South by Southwest in Austin and lots of [...]

Will Eastman, a Smithsonian historian, speaks of his experiences with legendary guitarist/inventor Les Paul.

Last Sunday, we hit up Washington DC for Rock the Bells , a touring festival featuring this summer's hottest hip-hop line-up. The day started off with disappointing news: co-headliner Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley would not be performing due to a family illness. Fortunately, K'Naan, Tech N9ne, Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek), Common, The Roots, and Busta Rhymes almost made us forget that Marley was a no-show. Tech N9ne stood out with a powerful set. They thought through every aspect - including blocking, delivery, costumes, make-up – and it showed in their performance. The [...]

I have spent hours, days, sometimes weeks tirelessly searching the internet in hopes that I would stumble across sound that excites me. It's frustrating, but on the occasion that I do, stumble, across a band that intrigues my ears I am elated to the point where the hours, days and weeks vanish into hindsight and all of the time spent is forgotten in an instant. Outside of the internet, where I spend most of my time, I also find it very rare that I stumble upon music that draws me in. That's what makes Ugly Purple Sweater [...]

Heart full of love Michael Benjamin Lerner has produced a flawless debut album under the name Telekinesis. His debut album Telekinesis! expels a dizzying, contagious amount of hyperactivity, energy, and passion. Lerner's thirteen power pop songs are all perfectly constructed, tightly compacted gems, placed alongside each other just so that you can sit and listen to it until its 30-ish minutes run out and time just sort of fades away. You'll put it on again and again. If you have a penchant for Elliott Smith's husky vocals, Cut [...]
I can pinpoint the exact moment that I became fascinated with Pentagram—exactly 20 seconds into 'Buzz Saw.' That's how long it took to feel both utterly crushed and suddenly awakened by all that is good and heavy in rock 'n' roll. Front man and mastermind Bobby Liebling remains a human hurricane and will be playing Pentagram's first-ever L.A. show this Friday. This interview by Kurt Midness.

Chain Gang The man that made the lisp cool, Ian Svenonius from The Make-Up/Scene Creamers/Weird War/Nation Of Ulysses voices Weird War bandmate Sebastian Thomson's latest project's first release. Thomson, also drummer of Trans Am, produces a funked up disco dirge with the 'Momma' 123 b-side 'Stone Age', a song that glistens with all the life and virility of a sleazy sex addict. With Svenonius replacing Publicist's usual anonymous vocoder vocals, the law-breaking grooves on 'Stone Age'are instantly catchy and entertaining, frothing with a fruity, frumpy bassline, Svenonius's echoey rap verdicts [...]

Seattle, Washington's Throw Me the Statue is currently working on their second album, Creaturesque, available August 4 (Worldwide) and August 17 (UK), via Secretly Canadian. Originally the one-man project of multifaceted musician and songwriter Scott Reitherman, TMTS has since expanded to a quartet with drummer Jarred Grimes, and multi-instrumentalists Aaron Goldman and Charlie Smith. The album is produced by TMTS and Phil Ek (The Shins, Built To Spill, Band Of Horses), and while the band retains much of the lo-fi bliss found on their critically acclaimed debut Moonbeams, Phil Ek's mixing of Creaturesque brings the band's [...]

Here are some photos from The Avett Brothers recent show here in DC at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium.... There's one beautiful consistent about the Avetts that's been proven every time I've seen them... [...]

24 hours after seeing The Hold Steady tear down the place , I was back to see the first of TV on the Radio 's two night stand at the 930 Club. It would be hard for anyone to follow up Craig Finn and company's hyperknetic stage show, but if anyone could it would be TVOTR's lead singer Tunde Adebimpe. That man has smoother dance moves than Fred Astaire and James Brown put together. [...]

Every once in awhile, during one of those "old school" mixes radio DJ's like to spin during the lunch hour, a TLC classic is pulled from the '90's vaults, resulting in sighs of bliss over a superior urban music era and the reminded ideal that the Crazy, Sexy and Cool trio were the the last great girl group to have ever done it (Props to Destiny's Child, but their hard-to-ignore Beyonce-centric ways kind of spoils the whole "group" thing in our eyes). No, they weren't as glamorous as some and didn't have the amazing vocal chops of others, [...]

Pour yourself a drink. Place those expensive headphones gently over your ears. Turn the lights down. Light a few candles and a stick of Nag Champa. Kick back in that comfy chair you inherited from your Grandpa. Close your eyes. Press play. And listen. Listen closely. You're about to enter a world of love, hate, joy, and pain. Feel nothing. Feel everything. Laugh, cry, and when the last song ends, open your eyes. If you're still breathing, you've just experienced A 750ml Affair. Artist Website 750ml [...]

Today is obviously Mother's Day in most parts and as a reminder-tribute, we are cuing up an oligatory track by Seattle's "Say Hi (To Your Mom)", titled something along the lines of "Oh" x (7). Oohs & Aahs (2009) is the sixth full-length album by Say Hi and was released on March 3, 2009 - written and recorded entirely by Eric Elbogen in his home studio over the course of 2008. It was their first release on Barsuk Records, whom they signed with on December 2, 2008. Happy Mutha's Day, and remember: No wire hangers ! [...]

Seattle, Washington's Hey Marseilles plays simple folk songs, interweaving orchestral instrumentation with melodic musings on time and place. Having garnered favorable reviews since their formation in late 2006, including a spot on Seattle Sound's "Top 10 Bands to Watch for 2008," HM released their first full-length album, To Travels & Trunks in August '08. Supporting the record with packed shows following the release, HM landed airplay on independent radio taste-maker KEXP and secured top ten listing on Seattle's Three Imaginary Girls' top Northwest releases readers poll. Additionally, Hey Marseilles was invited to SXSW 2009 as part of the [...]
Eco-spiritualist black metallers, Wolves In The Throne Room , released an EP last year about a bucket of oats and barley plotting to take over the world. That was reason enough for Tom Gibbons to interrogate Aaron Weaver, drummer with the Washington State-based band, after their recent London show . How was London this time around? "I was really pleased with that show. The last time we played London it was a bit more stressful for us [...]

Photo: James McCulloch You may have heard Washington 's latest track, "Clementine", on high rotation recently. Hands down, it is probably the most adorable track I've heard in a long while and with a film clip like this , it's easy to understand why. And while you are busy being smitten with "Clementine", here is her latest offering. [MP3] Washington - One Man Band Washington is not surprisingly the moniker of Melbourne-resident, Megan Washington. Her cute twee-pop offerings are intelligent and very well crafted [...]

Wale decides to hook up with Ms. Poker Face and Cool & Dre for his first single off Attention Deficit . After a couple listens, it's catchy but at the same time not especially memorable, especially considering I'm a fan of Wale and expect him to do well with his debut album. He puts in more work than your average MC does on their lead single (backhanded praise to be sure), but this song doesn't justify all the hype he's been receiving. I was expecting something a little bit more creative, but [...]
Editor's Note:Our good friend and AON contributor, Denman, is braving the Austin yearly madness known as SXSW. He will be twitterring, video documenting and blogging about his SXSW adventures. We wish we were there, of course, but I think we all can live vicariously through Denman in the following days. O-K. [...]
My brother and I are always calling each other with random questions or observations. The random nature of these questions and observations of course dictates that the need to share them comes at random times. Thankfully, we live in the 21st century, which means that we all have portable communicator devices (read: cell phones) on our person at all times - which is how I found myself standing outside a bar at one in the morning discussing outdated colloquial expressions. My brother thought it was funny that we still use the expression "hold your horses." Neither of us [...]
