Monday Music's the one weekly post wherein Some Of It Was True! drops its London-only rule. Waskerley Way - Sista An electro shanty with one motherlicker of a build-up, Sista opens with some Underworld -esque revolving swishy noises before breaking into some 6/8 - a bit Leftfield (in both senses), and from there, it just intensifies to some brilliant electro noise. This geordie producer gets extra points for pioneering the feline-influenced genres 'meowgaze' and 'catwave'. Cracking. [...]

Hmmm, reading the email I was sent by Shift-Static, there is a definite emphasis on their Edinburgh associations which seems entirely absent from any of their other PR material. So if they were trying to prey upon my nepotistic instincts then they, erm, probably had a point actually. It's hard to resist the idea that somewhere round the corner from you there exists a collection of talented fuckers making amazing music entirely out of the view of the world's music chatterati, so despite the fact that this lot are clearly far more from Newcastle than they are from [...]

I could not tell you the last time I saw one, perhaps back in my childhood, maybe the pan pipers pushed them off the street; one man with his kick drum on a string, a harmonica and half-sized acoustic is no match for a group of Peruvian pan people. Or perhaps the creature has evolved like Michael Bridgewater aka Waskerley Way , who, with himself alones creates electronic psychedelic shoegaze soundscapes, the like you can [...]

When I wrote about Michael Bridgewater - aka Waskerley Way - back in June , the focus was on his ability to turn a swirling mess of noise into a transfixing piece of music. On his La Magie Rouge cassette, out now on Ultra Friends Records , Bridgewater sharpens his talent for bringing disjointed sounds together. Worldbeat pop gem "Storm Song" borrows bits from the far-flung folk missives of places as far apart and foreign to each other as Senegal and Belgium. Polyrhythmic drum beats and bursting horn riffs are glued together by an interweaving haze [...]
If you're following these Music Fan's Mic podcasts, you're going to have to get used to the act of celebrating milestones. The past ten shows have been challenging and we haven't done brilliantly at keeping it to a weekly basis, but we've most certainly grown a better music taste through this process, which is a huge positive. The atmosphere of celebration is slightly underwhelmed by my sore throat - I try to tell jokes and the impact is lost through the rough croak that comes with each utterance. Within some advice on how to get through [...]

It's been a week since our first update and six days since a collection from the following day - and don't forget that in between then and now, we've had one of our regular new music podcasts , as well as sharing with you one of our most exciting discoveries in months, Gladius The Fertile . But let's press on, with some tracks from here and there (well, just the vast amount of talent on soundcloud), assembled over the week. ———————- [...]

Clearly his most ambitious work to date, Newcastle's Michael Bridgewater aka Waskerley Way 's new EP La Magie Rouge is a lesson in world music afflatus gone fuzz pop, and this is not to be understood as a disparaging judgment. Bridgewater took "damaged and doctored sounds" from places as far-off as Senegal, Ghana, Ethiopia and, well, Belgium, subsequently working them into carefully arranged dream pop songs situated somewhere between original glo-fi and shoegaze. With the dazzling tune "True Damage" the method turns out most successful - that is, if you are able to overcome those unsettling yet [...]

With the untimely demise of Ignition Festival meaning that Newcastle's wait for a national recognised music festival continues, you'd be forgiven for thinking that there is simply not the market for live gigs in the North East. However, having lived in Newcastle for the best part of nineteen years, I can confirm that this is certainly not the case, and September's Month Of Fridays is destined to reiterate my beliefs. Founded by a group of like minded, music loving companions, including radio presenters, musicians and event promoters, Month of Fridays is a realistic yet innovative event, set to [...]
