Austin is a city over-flowing with talented musicians, which makes it difficult for accomplished artists to stand out. Nevertheless, local singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and prolific musical collaborator David Thomas Jones is a rising DIY musician within Austin's city limits, and increasingly, beyond. Less than a year since he officially launched his solo effort, Jones has been [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

The last day of January 2013 saw the David Thomas Jones "Comfort Creatures EP" release party form up at Holy Mountain , where Scan Hopper started it off right with a blazingly-good (albeit admittedly unrehearsed) set. The tough task of following up that jam was left to uber-gigged Les RAV , who obliged (and then some) with Lauren Bruno's matchless vocal chops; backed, improbably, by harp and violin. David Thomas Jones played bass during these sets, but now [...]

Sometimes it's scary how well li'l ole last.fm knows our likes and. . .loves. Here is a sampling of what "they've" recommended or made available for free downloading activity. Left click arrows to listen, right click bandnames or song titles to download. We kind of went "Grrrr" when Blogger wouldn't let us include more than 200 characters' worth of labels, so we'll be adding some more last.fm

So with another week of Christmas standards left to endure and, if you're like us, they're starting to become wearisome. It's not too soon to want something new, Christmas-music-wise, is it? Will "relatively new" do? Released in '10, Watch Out For Rocket 's "13 Days of Christmas", like the holiday it professes to celebrate, stands the test of time, growing better with age. A genre variety pack of 13 pop-rock numbers from the prolific David Thomas Jones , done up in lofi style for your season celebratory pleasure. From the [...]

I realize how much of a hipster this is going to make me sound like, but David Thomas Jones is the best new indie act off the block and he hasn't even released an album yet. I know, I KNOW. But Jones' new single "Our Lives" and his wide accretion of musical projects is well worth the premature praise and, more importantly, your time. While being the front man for the immensely entertaining and immensely lo-fi band Watch Out For Rockets , Jones has played drums for The Murdocks, played bass for Scan Hopper, and is currently [...]

The bands to watch in 2011 queue is already filling up fast and it's only the second week of February. Right now, we are in a weird push and pull situation, in which we're trying to wrap up all of the 'best of 20102 music playlists as well as stay on top of highlighting the [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Words by Brendan Sullivan Lexically speaking, I think this band name is missing an exclamation point. If there's a rocket aimed at your friend's head, you owe them a heck of a lot more of a warning than, "Duck, dude!" Musically speaking, though, Watch Out For Rockets ' style of upbeat rock melodies drizzled over cymbal-driven percussive lines and almost-but-not-quite shouted vocals packs enough of a punky, exclamatory punch to more than make up for the aforementioned lack of punctuation. Listening to this stuff, you'll duck immediately, then bring your head up again, [...]

mp3: Watch Out For Rockets - "Slave Ships" New album from Austin's Watch Out For Rockets . I've been chillin their experimental rock long form Beasts With Hearts of Gold for awhile. Good. Now they've popped out with Telepathic War Machine . Also good. Solid pure lofi fuzz. Think Times New Viking a decibel lower and a groove higher. Get all their stuff free (!!!) at their Bandcamp page . Worth the trip.
Watch Out For Rockets - a Lotus Yet mp3Watch Out For Rockets - Buckle Yer Hair mp3from Beasts With Hearts Of GoldBack in August we blasted you over to Covert Curiosity to check out this lo-fi Austin band and then lifted over to eMusic to see what they might have. Watch Out For Rockets is a lo-fi band from Austin who have been recording their guitar-based power pop since 2007. The band's best effort so far is their 2009 sophomore album Beasts With Hearts Of Gold, jam-packed with twenty energetic pop songs that exist somewhere between early Spoon and Guided By Voices. Click here to take it for a spin. While you're there you can also download a free EP they released earlier this Summer. For more on the inner workings of Watch Out For Rockets, hit up Austin Sound . I recently asked , What are you in the mood for? Well, I've answered my own question by deciding I'm in the mood to make a mix tape. A mix of the best-of-2010-so-far. I hope you enjoy it. I've posted several of these songs before, but I ask you, what good is a mix if you can't get all the songs at the same time? Wintersleep -- "New Inheritors" mp3 off New Inheritors ( buy [...]

Happy Vernal Equinox! It's a beautiful day here in southern PA, a great day to clean the house (I know, right?), ride your bike or get out in the garden. Whilst you participate in your activity of choice, you should listen to this. There's a raw energy to Austin-based Watch Out for Rockets that really gets me going, especially on a sunny, warm day like today. It's fun, lo-fi DIY to the max and it's all the better for it. It's a perfect example of "less [...]
Watch Out For Rockets kind of sounds like the name of some crappy "emo pop" band, like "Eye Alaska" or "We The Kings" - while I dono about their name, one thing's for sure - they are not a crappy emo pop band. WOFR falls into that vein of stuff that's awesome but that I have yet to perfectly describe. This band (somehow) aligns with the likes of Port O'Brien or Aunt Dracula, but at the same time they sound like Superdrag and the Beach Boys, or the Byrds or something. I really kinda dig it. Unfortunately the band [...]

With SXSW less than a month away and waiting like a kid on Christmas to announce our mind-melting event lineup, it's only fitting that I stumble across a fun band from Austin, TX. Watch Out For Rockets plopped into the ole' inbox last week in an unassuming manner, not with flashy graphics or paragraphs of puffery . Nope, with only a link to their MySpace and a "PS. Did I mention we're the greatest band on earth?" it was a chuckle and click later that catapulted me into their tunes: [MP3] Watch [...]
