Watcha Clan has successfully shrunk the size of the world into an mp3 file with their latest effort Radio Babel . Based in France, but speaking in tongues, Watcha Clan breaches the world fusion barrier with danceable tracks, political commentary, and traditional instrument samples. Like their previous release, Diaspora Hi-Fi: A Mediterranean Caravan , Watcha Clan takes bits and pieces from the diverse set of cultures represented in the group and sprays them in an electronic frenzied shower liable to get any dance floor jumping. Borrowing from hip-hop, drum-n-bass and dub-reggae, their leader on the [...]

As far as music styles go The Watcha Clan's album Radio Babel can definitely be ranked amongst one of the most eclectic I've listed too. The Marseille based trio's soulful funky ensemble of songs such as With or Without The Wall and We are one combined with the more dancey uplifting numbers such as 'Hasnaduro', songs going deep into their Jewish and Algerian heritages like 'Im Nin'alua' and a slamming drum and bass number like Fever is Rising. The beauty of this album is that despite the combination of all these [...]

On the first listen of the remix for "Goumari", from Watcha Clan 's 2008's Diaspora Hi-FI: A Mediterranean Caravan, the sample of Dawn Penn's 1994 hit "You Don't Love Me (No No No)" is so familiar that you wonder what exactly this French quartet is going to bring to the table. Is this simply another product of musical cultural appropriation? However, unlike Rhianna's recent pneumatic remake of the song , the remix incorporates layers of bhangra and middle-eastern inspired rhythms, using the dancehall track to incorporate a flourish of exotic sounds and textures. [...]

Watcha Clan are a French quartet that fuses together influences as diverse as its members' heritages. Drawing on North African, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, French, and modern electronic musical styles for inspiration, the Clan claim a nomadic ethic, calling no single style "home." Since their inception at the turn of the century, Watcha Clan's touring schedule and lifestyle have been as nomadic as their philosophy. Group members Matt (bass), Soupa Ju (electronic elements), Sista K (vocals), and Suprême Clem (keyboards) have spent significant time in Algeria, Cuba, India, Spain, and Hungary soaking up the local musical flavors. Their compositions feature Hebrew, [...]

Watcha Clan offers a tour of the globe as filtered through slick beats on the 2008 release, Diaspora Hi-Fi. On a record that comfortably encompasses African, Arabic, and reggae influences, the Balkan grooves are definitely the creamy filling. You don't...

"Electro-Balkan hip-hop".

watcha clan , an, um, electro-balkan outfit from marseille whose influences range across the mediterranean (north african, spanish, arabic, hebrew and, of course, french), will make their first appearance in the united states on 1 october at the droma gypsy festival in new york. their latest album, diaspora hi-fi , mashes those aforementioned influences together to come up with something visceral & danceable & fresh. but don't take our word for it: watcha clan - balkan qoulou [...]
