5 Comic Movies That Should Have Never Been Made

5 Comic Movies That Should Have Never Been Made Comics and graphic novels are, by definition, very cinematic forms of art. Where the pacing of novels can ramble on and on when translated to the screen (leading to a lot of beautifully shot walking ), comics tell a story in much the same way that a film does. Adapted correctly, a movie based on a comic can be wildly popular, critically acclaimed, and merchandising mother lodes - examples: the Nolan trilogy, Marvel's Avengers. But if anyone knows how to take a thing that works and twist it into an unrecognizable, derivative, simplified lump of marketing, it's [...]

Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen Cover Art Heading to Auction

Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen Cover Art Heading to Auction The iconic blood-splattered smiley face cover for Watchmen #1 is among a handful of original artwork from the seminal 1986 miniseries by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons up for sale next month as part of a Heritage Auctions signature auction in New York City. Described by the auction house as “historic” and a “DC masterwork,” the 10-inch by 15-inch image is joined by Gibbons’ covers for Watchmen #2 and #3, John Higgins’ color guide for the cover of Issue 1, a page from Issue 7, and a page and color guide from Issue 8. The pieces [...]

On An On

On An On - "Ghosts" (Official Video)
Perfection is boring, and scary. Take Doctor Manhattan from the graphic novel masterpiece The Watchmen: the ultimate being. He had the ability to do anything he wanted. He would always win, and that made him both scary and boring. In stark contrast the rest of the naturally able ensemble were flawed humans, struggling with internal demons and unpredictable relationships. Imperfection won in the end, and it was interesting. The Hunter captured my attention because On An On have captured grit on this electro indie piece. There's clipping on the [...]

Gerard & The Watchmen - Stables

Gerard & The Watchmen - Stables Dave Gerard & The Watchmen released the I Climbed a Tree EP in April, but I think it's better suited to the new chills of winter settling in your bones. Something about this EP is so tender, I want to carry all the words and melodies around in my coat pocket, close to my heart. The gentle and understated bits of mandolin and banjo don't hurt either. BEFORE WATCHMEN: What’s the hubbub, bub?

BEFORE WATCHMEN: What’s the hubbub, bub? I had a few thoughts to share on the controversy over DC creating new Watchmen titles over the protestations of creator Alan Moore.  If you’re a comic book fan, you already know the essence of the battle, so I won’t restate what’s clear.  But I think that both sides of the argument are taking unnecessarily extreme positions. First, Alan.  I’m not a DC hater.  At least not for the same reasons that Alan Moore hates DC.  DC hasn’t done anything outrageous, even based on Moore’s own accounts.  He admits that he failed to read his own contract, which [...]

WATCHMEN (BEGINS) AND OTHER COMIC NEWS-OF-THE-WEEK

WATCHMEN (BEGINS) AND OTHER COMIC NEWS-OF-THE-WEEK Duh.  The headline is that 25 years after-the-fact, DC finally decided to snatch the money off the table.  Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen is the bestselling graphic novel of all time, and there’s good reason for it: It’s a piece of art with mystery, politics, philosophy, and (of course) action and violence, told using characters with depth and weight. So why do prequels and fuck that all up?  Simple.  $$$ Yeah, there’s a lot of talent attached to the seven 4-issue minis that will each focus on a particular Watchman, but I can’t [...]

Who watches THE WATCHMEN? Canadian rock band returns from the ’90s as time stands still

Who watches THE WATCHMEN? Canadian rock band returns from the ’90s as time stands still Who watched the Watchmen? I did. I watched the Watchmen. A lot. Fourteen times live in the '90s, actually. Which was amazing because they play a brand of mainstream Canadian rock and roll (made famous up here in the cold northlands by the Tragically Hip) that didn't sit easily in my indie/alt/Britpop cassette and CD collection. In fact, it was the Tragically Hip's "fault" I became a Watchmen fan. Rather, their manager's. Quick story: on a plane ride to Vancouver (was off to San Fran with the 'rents and Vancouver was a pit stop), a then-18 [...]

Possible Watchmen Prequel Miniseries To Be Published By DC Comics

Possible Watchmen Prequel Miniseries To Be Published By DC Comics DC Comics may be planning on doing prequels to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. The plan is to do four prequel miniseries that tie in together. The roster of talent rumored is strong, and includes Gibbons. The entire arc for the four miniseries is being plotted and possibly drawn by Darwyn Cook. The other names in the mix are John Higgins, Joseph Michael Straczinski, JG Jones and Andy Kubert, but these are all preliminary names. More info will be posted as this project progresses.

Telling Stories and Selling Soap

Telling Stories and Selling Soap Longtime readers of this blog (I used to joke there were two of you, but I think both of them stopped reading a long time ago), may recall I got a little obsessed during the latter part of the run of Lost with the challenges of sequential narrative, which is also sometimes referred to as serialized storytelling. Towards the tail end of this year’s TV season, I read a fair amount of commentary on Twitter about the balance between shows with standalone episodes and those that heavily leaned on a serialized [...]

Zack Snyder Talks About ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’ Although no details on the films plot, or further casting, director Zack Snyder spoke with the L.A. Times about Superman: Man of Steel . Debating the Rating

Debating the Rating When it comes to filtering what is deemed acceptable in film, how much responsibility should to be placed on the viewer? Now I am not talking about the film buffs who can argue the merits of Spielberg and Kurosawa, I mean the average filmgoer. The person who helps Jackass 3D make 50 million dollars instead of supporting an independent or foreign film being shown in the same theatre. Currently the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is the governing body that determines what rating a film will get. They are the ones who decide that Toy Story [...]

Zack Snyder’s Superman? Best Idea Yet!

SuperHeroHype has posted a story stating that Zack Snyder will be directing the next Superman reboot. When the rumours were flying around about Kevin Smith’s Superman, I was excited at the prospect of what he would do with it but in no way thought it would be an amazing super hero movie. Which is I [...]

Copertina dell’anno

Copertina dell’anno Unearthing ed è lo spoken album di Alan Moore . Se non sapete chi è Alan Moore sputatevi in faccia, e magari leggete Watchmen, From Hell, V for Vendetta, per dirne qualcuno. Coglioni.

Concert review: The Watchmen with Birds of Wales [Horseshoe tavern, September 25, 2010]

Concert review: The Watchmen with Birds of Wales [Horseshoe tavern, September 25, 2010] Toronto - Ever go to a concert and feel like it's in fact a costume party? This Saturday night certain seemed like one. The Watchmen obviously has some inner strengths, not least being emotive singing. But unless you have been sleeping for the past decade, both Joey Serlin and Daniel Greaves now sport sleek and edgy bald looks. I counted no less than 20 other guys who share this fashion sense at the Watchmen's reunion show when I walk in, and more over the length of the night. Granted, it's not something rare. We're not talking about a Halloween party [...]
