The iconic blood-splattered smiley face cover for Watchmen #1 is among a handful of original artwork from the seminal 1986 miniseries by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons up for sale next month as part of a Heritage Auctions signature auction in New York City. Moloch is the mystical villain that played a major role in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen and now the character has his own prequel comic. The two-part series, Before Watchmen: Moloch is written by J. Michael Straczynski (Before Watchmen: Nite Owl) and pencilled by Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets). Dave Gerard & The Watchmen released the I Climbed a Tree EP in April, but I think it's better suited to the new chills of winter settling in your bones. Something about this EP is so tender, I want to carry all the words and melodies around in my coat pocket, close to my heart. The gentle and understated bits of mandolin and banjo don't hurt either. Warner Home Video has revealed details on the Watchmen: Ultimate Cut & Graphic Novel Collection which will arrive in stores November 13th. Retail will be around $74.98. This new cut of the film weaves the animated Tales of the Black Freighter feature into the director's cut. Also included will be 2 hours of bonus features, Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comics, the original theatrical cut on DVD, the first DC Comics hardcover edition of the influential graphic novel, and collectible lenticular packaging.

I had a few thoughts to share on the controversy over DC creating new Watchmen titles over the protestations of creator Alan Moore.  If you’re a comic book fan, you already know the essence of the battle, so I won’t restate what’s clear.  But I think that both sides of the argument are taking unnecessarily extreme positions. Who watched the Watchmen? I did. I watched the Watchmen. A lot. Fourteen times live in the '90s, actually. Which was amazing because they play a brand of mainstream Canadian rock and roll (made famous up here in the cold northlands by the Tragically Hip) that didn't sit easily in my indie/alt/Britpop cassette and CD collection. DC Comics may be planning on doing prequels to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. The plan is to do four prequel miniseries that tie in together. The roster of talent rumored is strong, and includes Gibbons. The entire arc for the four miniseries is being plotted and possibly drawn by Darwyn Cook. The other names in the mix are John Higgins, Joseph Michael Straczinski, JG Jones and Andy Kubert, but these are all preliminary names. More info will be posted as this project progresses.
