I don't know about you, but I can't think of a more awkward time in my life than when I was in high school. Thankfully, my awkward times in high school can't even compare to those of Jenna Hamilton from MTV's teenage comedy Awkward . Starring Ashley Rickards as the super ill-fated Jenna, Awkward follows the craziness that poor Jenna just can't avoid as she chases her dream boy. The show is like PG version of the American Pie series crossed with My So Called Life , filled with plenty of hilarious [...]

Is this album here yet? Every single time I get a new track from GRMLN I get excited by the prospect of the fun to be had when Empire finally hits stores on June 4th. Personally, the further we get along, the more I see a similarity in the hype that surrounded Wavves when Nathan first broke onto the scene. And just like those raucous tunes, the songs, including the one below, are filled with energy and brevity, giving us the perfect blend of brevity and [...]
Sometimes I get exhausted just putting this list together, let alone trying to figure out how I can be in 20 places at once... Thursday, May 16th Janelle Monae with San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall Janelle Monae is the single most exciting thing happening in R&B right now. Actually, she could be the [...] The post Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 5/16/13-5/22/13 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Wavves started as a recording project by Nathan Williams in 2008. The band put out some early recordings and two full length albums ( Wavves in 2008 and Wavvves in 2009) on Fat Possum Records, the band then gained recognition. In 2010, they released their third full length album, a well received album by critics in which the band brought in more of a 90s Rock influence, serving as a different sound album sonically than their first two full length albums which leaned to the Lo-Fi scuzzy realm of production. With 2013’s Afraid [...]

The role of any artist is usually to push the boundaries – sometimes in the guise of publicity, often for the sake of social commentary, and sometimes just because they can (cough, Madonna, cough). Unfortunately, those artists aren’t the topic of this article. This article is about artists who’ve gone too far by acting inappropriately off or on-stage and crossed the line with or without intent. There are public faux pas, there are unfortunate misdemeanors, and then there are full-on, highly publicized, embarrassingly public meltdowns that would put even Kanye West, King of the Mid-Concert Rant, to shame. [...]

This week we got the opportunity to ask WAVVES frontman NATHAN WILLIAMS a couple of questions following the news that the band will be travelling to the country this year for the much anticipated SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS festival. We talked everything from the artwork inspiration for the band's latest LP 'Afraid Of Heights', to the craziest thing that's ever happened to WAVVES on the road... NATHAN gave us a hilarious story which involved robbing a coke dealer with fellow band member STEPHEN POPE in Las Vegas... [...]

For some, today was a b-e-a-utiful day, for others, it may as well have been their last. Why so extreme? Because May the 2nd, 2013 is the date marked in everyone's physical and mental calendars as the day SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS tickets go on sale! With the lineup announced just a week ago featuring Mumford and Sons , The National and TV On The Radio 's only Australian shows, Polyphonic Spree performing the Rocky Horror Picture Show , You Am I performing their first two albums and a [...]

Photograph by Andrew Paynter It’s hard to believe we’re four months into 2013. Winter has worn out its welcome, spring is slowly creeping into the picture, and another year of university has come to a close. This mixtape is pretty self-explanatory: a collection of nine tracks that have accompanied me through yet another semester. Atoms for Peace - Default A cold, calculated piece of electronic sprawl from Thom Yorke and company. I love the clickety-clack beat and the icy synths on the [...]

Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy... Okay, no, Eminem won't be appearing at this years SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS , but I can imagine that's how you've been feeling on the lead up to this very anticipated day; that being lineup announcement day! We've known the dates, location and rumours for a while now, but what we really want is the list. With some big names confirmed before today that already had us in the line for a ticket (ie James Blake , Polyphonic Spree , Wavves ..) [...]

Afraid of Heights definitely meshes all the elements of alternative music and teen pop cheeriness. The sunny melodies a juxtaposition for the ghoulish lyrics. The release is fitting, just in time for beaches and bodies to ride the surf. With summer around the corner, all fourteen tracks of Afraid of Heights should be getting radio-play as it is the perfect anthem to celebrate the sun. The album cover of Afraid of Heights is strange, to say the least. Without going into too much details of my own interpretation for the art, it is perfectly exemplary of what [...]
