schubas' 4th annual "tomorrow never knows" festival is happening this weekend, with john vanderslice & the m's kicking things off tonight...the event started back in 2005 as a way to showcase up & comers during the frigid & normally concert barren month of january here in chicago, & over the years it's seen performances from great acts like magnolia electric co., tapes 'n tapes, the ponys, dr. dog, & flosstradamus (to name a few)...this year's got an equally eclectic line up with detroit afrobeat outfit nomo playing tomorrow night along with bobby conn & baby teeth, while much blogged [...]
Laat ik maar beginnen met toe te geven dat ik niet weet wat ik met Wax Fang aan moet. Om te beginnen heeft deze band rond Scott Carney een bizarre naam (is een 'Wax Fang' een draculatandje?) en ten tweede...
Nothing scientific about this list: it's not a top-selling list, or a most-popular list, or even a played-a-ton-on-the radio list. Just my favorites from some of the music I either bought or discovered this year. Much of this music was found and purchased courtesy of various music blogs I read, thus dispelling the nasty rumor that they do no good for the economy. Some were purchased because the cover art intrigued me enough to buy the CD, thus dispelling the nasty rumor that there are secret satanic messages in cover art. The rest were purchased as a tax write-off. Enjoy! [...]
Mixmas time again! The first day is a double-header, with Ivana representing far off lands of New York and Scott holding it down for Kentucky. MP3: Wax Fang - Sweet Bloody Murder Every year there's a mix that completely knocks me on my tuckus. So far, this is that mix for ...

I'm sure this will end with me being accused of treason of some kind, but just to settle... I really do love Christmas and I love you all. Aside from being the time of the year where fantastic deals heavenly praises flood suburban malls Earth-other than being a time to look to the age-old decorations of pine and tinsel to remind us of desire generosity-Christmas has some economical historical significance too. It recalls a very special time... You don't hate [...]

Mixed in Nashville at Beach House with Mark Nevers, La La Land is Wax Fang's first full-length—last year frontman Scott Carney released the solo debut Black and Endless Nights, on which he played every instrument, under the moniker Scott Carney and Heavy Friends. He recruited a rhythm section, and together they've taken that album's dreamy approach and expanded the palette. The result is more grandiose and harder rockin'—the band's softer, more delicate moments remain intact, but here Carney's searing guitar leads are more freely doled out. Nashville Scene [...]

I haven't had a lot of time to download any new music lately, since the majority of my time on my computer has been spent just attempting to get it running smoothly, but here's a few tracks to tide you over until - well, Wednesday at least. And the fact that it's wet and cold outside and there's a wintry mix to the tunes is only a mere coincidence, I assure you. Yes, I do wish there were still autumns in NJ, instead of a switch directly from summer to winter, but sadly, that is no [...]

This little girl to the left may be Wax Fang's youngest fan. As I sat on the staircase, I watched her Dad zip around the area where Scott, Kevin and Jake had assembled snapping shot after shot. It should be noted that she was not wearing headphones, she was wearing ear protection as Wax Fang nearly blew the windows out of the Bardstown Road located record store, Ear X-tacy this past tuesday. I took some pictures from my perch at the bottom of the staircase as well as a recording of the show that turned out well besides [...]

Last Saturday we went to the album release show for Wax Fang; for those who made it out, you know it was a great show. From Lucky Pineapple's high energy opening set to Centipede E'est (Scott Carney's pals from his second home, Pittsburg) rocking the foreign crowd ultimately leading to Wax Fang's brilliant set. Lucky Pineapple has recently lost David Cundiff as bassist, and swiftly added Aaron Hodge (of Louisville bands Wino, Mr. Panic Button, WEAPONS, and most recently The Radium Screen ) to their lineup. This was the first time [...]

La La Land is the latest release from one of my favorite Louisville-based bands, Wax Fang . (I've written about them here and here , and had them come to Indianapolis to play for us .) It's their sophamore album, but it's the first record with the participation of new drummer Kevin Ratterman, formerly of the band Elliott, and ex-Cabin bassist Jake Heustis. Wax Fang has had the full-force pressure of being the "next-big-thing" out of Louisville since they were first heard [...]

So - two weeks from today, Next Big Nashville will be in full swing, and we'll all be recovering from the second night of festivities and the first night of showcases. With over 130 local and regional artists playing the festival, there's a HUGE list of performers to digest - some of which are familiar names around town, some of which I'll admit I've never seen, heard, or maybe even heard of. That means it's about time we start looking at some of this year's performers... and by "looking at" [...]
"Someone told me/It's all happening at the zoo/ I do believe it/I do believe it's true." Rather than barbecuing or parading, I spent my Memorial Day weekend on a quest to find the king of the ice. Yesterday my crew and I got on a train and headed due north -- to the heart of the Bronx. Simon & Garfunkel - At The Zoo We started [...]
Image via Josh McDowell + Rob Schrab While browsing for a stream-able version of Rob Schrab's Robot Bastard, I stumbled across some important information: the final Scud comic is being made. Scud: The Disposable Assasin was an integral part of my young-adulthood. One of my mom's younger co-workers introduced me to the ...

I didn't get any work done yesterday, but I got a ton of new music. These are my favorite tracks, mostly from artists I read about on the blogs listed to the right: Alberta Cross – Lucy Rider (acoustic) Alberta Cross – Old Man Chicago J. Tillman [...]

I've talked about Wax Fang before, but if you listened to My Old Kentucky Blog on SIRIUS Satellite Radio last night, you heard The Whigs singing their praises as well. I wanted to follow that up today with a couple songs from the band for those of you that listened and enjoyed. Wax Fang is from Louisville and has toured with My Morning Jacket last year and The Whigs this year. They've also opened for Spoon and The Features, [...]

Jims James of My Morning Jacket takes his recommendations seriously. Back in July The New York Times asked James The Question: "Whacha listening to?" His response: Scott Carney He's a guy from Louisville. I went to high school with him, never knew him, and he moved away to Pittsburgh. "Black and Endless Night" (scottcarneymusic.com) came out in late 2005, and I couldn't believe it was from this time period: it's got a futuristic energy, a lot of elements I've never heard work before. A combo of all these [...]
