Artist: Way Out West

Luger meddelar i dag att Way Out West, i alla fall i år, kommer att bli tre dagar. Och då pratar vi spelningar i Slottskogen. Klubbarna fortsätter också, men en hel dag extra blir det. I och med detta går biljettpriset upp. 1895:- (1595:- om man är under 18 år) får man betala för årets festival. I kontrast till Peace & Love där man betalar mindre för fem dagar(!). Systrarna i First Aid Kit släppte alldeles nyligen, typ i går, sitt andra album The Lion's Roar med vilket de fått en hel del välförtjänat kritik (lyssna på ungefär halva skivan med Spotify). Luger känner åtminstone så, då de i dag avslöjar att Azealia Banks kommer till årets Way Out West. Kanadensiska Leslie Feist, eller bara Feist som hon kallar sig själv, har kontinuerligt fått lysande kritik och det välförtjänt. Senast i höstas då hon släppte skivan Metals, även om hyllningskören inte lät lika mycket som den gjorde när The Reminder släpptes tre år tidigare. Hur som helst, i mars spelar hon på Cirkus i Stockholm och missar man det har nu Luger ordnat så man kan se henne på Way Out West i augusti. Som tidigare rapporterat är det en festivalsommar för återuppståndna band. Nu är det dags för Refused, Umeåbandet som under sin levnadstid inte var särdeles stora och efter en katastrofal USA-turné lade av. Men åren går och mytbildning och legendstatus byggs på och numer räknar många deras album The Shape of Punk to Come som ett av världens bästa album som någonsin gjorts. Så för att göra sitt verk rättvisa känner bandmedlemmarna nu ett sug efter att uppträda tillsammans igen. Det och, får man anta, stora summor pengar. The clock is ticking ever closer to the end of this year's Way Out West festival. Passing through the festival gates is bittersweet, as I'll be walking back through them for the last time in a matter of hours. In that time, though, there are several more bands to see, more experiences to record, and more lucky stars to thank for having access to this glorious event. The festival has been good to me, and the phenomenal clarity of the speakers has made me ponder ways to lure the sound engineers back to Portland with me. So begins [...]

The Way Out West festival has flown by in a blur of bands, backstage lounging, and racing from one performance area to another to catch every possible sight. Now though, as it draws to a close, time begins to drag. Somewhere behind the Flamingo Stage, Jarvis Cocker et al are preparing to perform. All around me, eager fans strain to see beyond the thick black curtain covering the stage. A trio of girls is dressed in classic Britpop fashion, complete with hastily-applied dark lipstick. Total. Sensory. Overload. That's the best possible description of what it's like to enter Göteborg, Sweden's Way Out West festival. Held at Slottsskogen, a huge park in the central part of the city, this festival's features are simply too much to take in. There are three main stages. Flamingo and Azalea, the two largest, are situated at the center. Linné, the smallest, is at the rear of the festival area and is the only stage with a canopy to shield fans from the weather. I'm of the opinion that a festival is destined to be good if the weather is sunny. Luckily for Way Out West, Gothenburg was smothered in sun and blue sky. The second day of the festival proved that great bands, lively atmosphere and the power of the sun is a winning formula. After ten hours on two planes and three hours on a bus, I've learned a universal truth: everywhere you go, the same jerks will be present to cut in line in front of the patient, queue-abiding patrons awaiting entry to something. One of the only complaints about Way Out West is that there is no guaranteed entry to the club events, no matter how expensive or exclusive one's festival wristband may be. This year Way Out West had certainly made an effort with headliners Prince and Kanye West, and other high-quality bookings such as Fleet Foxes, Pulp and Robyn to the festival stages. The English festival is dead; long live the English festival. As pedantic a statement as that may be, it is becoming increasingly true. Stale, repetitive lineups, extortionate prices and an increasingly corporate atmosphere have resulted in dwindling festival sales and a move towards European festivals. Indeed, Way Out West Festival has all the credentials to be the perfect festival; not only does the festival consistently provide great line-ups but it is located in the Mecca of all things cool: Gothenburg, Sweden. Kanye West in Sweden I caught Kanye West 's 2+ hour headlining set at the Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden on Saturday night, one night after I saw Prince play a 2+ hour set on the same stage, surprise cameo by Kanye included (Prince did not return the favor). Without comparing setlists, as far as I could tell from memory, Kanye's set in Sweden was the basically the same set he did at Coachella minus Justin Vernon on guest vocals. [...]

The Tallest Man On Earth ser rätt liten ut där han står och kisar ut mot ett gigantiskt folkhav.
