So you remember the insanely epic collaboration between Pretty Lights and LeAnn Rime and Dr. Ralph Stanley? Well the chilled out track just got blasted with a dose of bass and energy. Here's a new Electro Mix of the track, done by Pretty Lights. It still sounds very similar to the original, but a a little heavier giving it a good change of pace. The vocals and PL's style works so well on this track. Turn it up, enjoy! Pretty Lights feat. LeAnn Rimes and Dr. Ralph Stanley - Wayfaring Stranger (Pretty Lights Electro Mix) [...]

Maria McKee: Wayfarin' Stranger [ purchase ] Jerry Reed: Wayfaring Stranger [ purchase ] "Wayfaring Stranger" is a standard in the folk music catalog, dating back to the 19th century. A religious ballad, it gained new meaning during the 1930s, with lyrics seemingly reflecting the plight of the displaced and homeless -- poor wayfaring strangers, "traveling through this world of woe." In the 1940s, it became a signature tune for Burl Ives, who named both his autobiography [...]

Fort Wayne, Indiana's Black Jet Radio have reformed and offered up two new releases. "The Wayfaring Stranger" plays both classic and fresh. Eerily the band's grimier rock undertones do nothing but help roughen up the pretty portrayal of a soulful standard too far past. Black Jet Radio - The Wayfaring Stranger Black Jet Radio ( Facebook ) Rating 8.3

The blogosphere was set ablaze a few days ago stemming from news of one of the bigger collaborations in the indie scene of recent. Following their chance meeting at the Austin, TX music extravaganza SXSW , minimal producer James Blake and Wisconsin crooner Justin Vernon decided to work together and have previewed the culmination of the upcoming October release of Enough Thunder . Listen to the auto-tune heavy track that's causing the spontaneous combustion of ironically bearded hipster heads everywhere below.

Check out Ed Sheeran covering Jamie Woon's arrangement of "Wayfaring Stranger". Ed is an up and coming English singer/songwriter/rapper who has been touring and releasing music independently since 2005. He recently signed to Atlantic and will be releasing his major label debut titled '+' in August. There are loads of videos of him on YouTube doing acoustic covers and jamming with UK grime and hip-hop artists such as Devlin, Example, JME and Scorcher, and he always comes over as a supremely likeable and talented guy. Download the "Wayfaring Stranger" cover (which is from [...]

I've no idea where to place this Ed Sheeran chap that everyone seems to want to talk about. On the one hand, you've got the grime-influenced Ed Sheeran of his chart-bound collaboration with Devlin and self released 'No.5 Collaborations' EP - the manifestation of all of my white friends who pretend to be black, except…. talented musically, and not at all irritating (this is, undoubtedly, a tricky feat to pull off). Then there's the Ed Sheeran of the recent One Take EP , released for free, which depicts a cleaner cut artist who steps neatly between James [...]

The British seem to be ushering in a musical renaissance of sorts, specifically in the electronic realm, judging by the wave of tremendous talent in the form of recent breakthrough artists such as James Blake and Jamie xx . This notion is not as absurd as one may think, especially considering the two aforementioned artists have seen chart-topping debut records in their early 20's. Not one to be lost amongst the sea of young trailblazers is 27-year old singer and producer Jamie Woon . Having already gotten his foot through the door with the critically acclaimed Wayfaring Stranger EP (which features [...]
More from Eva Cassidy is never a bad thing.

Enjoy our ( striped maple hollow ) take on the classic Wayfaring Stranger. This was one of our living room demos from last summer, soon to be pressed into service to get us back on track, living the the dream, and playing live music every month or two. Thanks to archive.org for the moving pictures .

It's been a while since I just wrote about a song (the others are here and here ), and even though this won't actually get posted for a week or more, tonight is made for a night of meditating on "Wayfaring Stranger". This weekend was horribly overshadowed by death with an internet/real life acquaintance losing his wife many decades before he should have, and our tech guru, Trevor, losing a pet. I know some of you have no idea how sad losing a pet can be, but anyone who's ever lost [...]

In addition to Guitar Soli and Ladies of the Canyon , Numero Group has just released another addition to the Wayfaring Stranger series entitled Lonesome Heroes . While we've yet to fully delve into the trove of songwriters collected here, what we've heard is an amazing cross-section of American songwriting that draws not only from obvious touch points such as Neil Young, but from the wider culture of country rock in general. While most of the music comes from the high-point of the "hippie" songwriter era, shockingly nothing [...]

Hope no one minds an early "Sunday" post this week; I'm off to Germany in the morning, and was worried I might miss the deadline otherwise. Plus, it's the fortieth anniversary of Woodstock today . How apropos, right? Though the statistics on blog readers tell us that the majority of our readers were conceived after the summer of love, there's no denying the myriad ways in which both the Woodstock generation and the 1969 Woodstock festival have shaped our collective musical landscape. [...]

Dubstep has arrived in this fine city of ours and there is one promotion company that is absolutely TRAIL BLAZING their way through the end of 2009. Embrace has gone ahead and booked some of the biggest dubstep dons in the game today and I am absolutely ecstatic for the next few months in Toronto! Benga (Sept.18th @ Mod Club), Skream (Sept.27th @ Wrongbar), Martyn (Oct.4th @ Wrongbar), Rusko (Oct.9th @ Mod Club), Caspa [...]

I've spent the whole weekend writing a sermon about the Unitarian Universalist hymnbook for this weekend's lay service at our church. Now I've got hymnal on the brain, and the thought of switching over to folk music makes my head hurt. Which would be a problem, if it were not for the fact that the modern Unitarian Universalist hymnal is about as folk-oriented as a hymnbook gets. It wasn't always that way. The UU hymnal has gone through several incarnations since the first one was published in 1937. [...]

Dark, omnipresent, foreboding is the sound of Burial. He lends his hand on this track from Jamie Woon. Jamie Woon is a 21 year old singer-songwriter from SW London whose sound lies between the usually distinct genres of alternative rock and soul music. The song, Wayfaring Stranger, is also know as Poor Wayfaring Stranger which is a folk/spiritual song about a soul's journey through life. This song dates back to 1816. Jamie Woon - Wayfaring Stranger (Burial Remix) Lryics: I am a poor [...]

It is absolutely trivial to note that certain songs crop up over and over again in the folk collector's travels; after all, as our blog subtitle reminds us, when we talk about folk, we're talking about a form that by its very nature treats older songs and tunes as part of the communication which makes us community, available to all who lay claim to culture. But just as true hitmaking is hardly formulaic, it's not often obvious what keeps a song in the stream. Our Single Song [...]
