Esperanza Spalding: Radio Music Society

Esperanza Spalding: Radio Music Society Radio Music Society is the latest album released by jazz singer, bass player Esperanza Spalding, who was released to many of us during the 53 rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011 where she won Best New Artist, which was the very first time in history this award was given to a jazz artist. Yet, Esperanza came on the music scene years prior. Esperanza Spalding was introduced as a solo artist in 2006 on a Spanish label where she featured her many sides of her musical personality. In 2008, she made her international debut as a new jazz artist when she recorded with [...]

DIMENSIONS AND EXTENSIONS: Sam Rivers, 1923-2011

DIMENSIONS AND EXTENSIONS: Sam Rivers, 1923-2011 We were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of the great Sam Rivers. That last name is as right as rain - his talents were so varied, multifarious, they were like streams that fed into the greater ocean of jazz. Best known as great saxophonist equally adept at the tenor and soprano, he was also a remarkable flutist and pianist, who quietly put his stamp on both instruments. As anyone who has seen Rivers live can attest, he was an astonishing improviser who could instantly summon pieces that were both dramatic and affecting, wrought in [...]

Wayne Shorter – Witch Hunt

Wayne Shorter – Witch Hunt In honor of the upcoming holiday this Monday, I thought I'd highlight something a little peculiar (spooky?). Besides its titular connection to the ubiquitous late October character, "Witch Hunt" has some interestingly eerie musical elements. I know compared some of the other music I've written about here, Wayne Shorter's "Witch Hunt" is fairly "regular" post-bop. It has a straight-ahead arrangement, features traditional jazz timbres, and isn't overtly dissonant. In 2011, this is not too experimental. However, in 1964, when Wayne Shorter's quintet recorded Speak No Evil - the album that opens with "Witch Hunt," - they were known [...]

Music Review: Miles Davis Quintet - LIVE in Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Vol.1

Excellent live performances by the second great Miles Davis Quintet.

........stretch the limits

Wayne Shorter was at the peak of his creative powers when he recorded Schizophrenia in the spring of 1967. Assembling a sextet that featured two of his Miles Davis bandmates (pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Ron Carter), trombonist Curtis Fuller, alto saxophonist/flautist James Spaulding and drummer Joe Chambers, Shorter found a band that was capable of conveying his musical "schizophrenia,"

Miles Davis - Live at the Fillmore East (March 7, 1970): It's About That Time

Miles / McLaughlin / Corea: 1970 audio: It's About That Time
Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop are usually credited for helping to kill off the peace and love Woodstock hippy rainbow vibe in 1970. Listening to this double live muther of Miles Davis unleashing his electric band on a bunch of hippies at the Fillmore East waiting to see Steve Miller and Neil Young , you could say that Miles did his part, too. Bill Graham did everyone a favor when he was running the Fillmores in NYC and San Francisco by putting together some inspired bills. King Crimson [...]

Review: Wayne Shorter Quartet

Review: Wayne Shorter Quartet Wayne Shorter Quartet - Philadelphia Museum of Art - April 23, 2010 Going to see the Wayne Shorter Quartet premiere a new commissioned piece penned by the legendary saxophonist is an odd occurrence. Certainly he is recognized as the greatest living jazz composer, but in fact his band, now celebrating its tenth year (a tenure largely unheard of in the jazz world) has long since moved beyond the concept of songs per se, addressing most performances instead with an organic, suite based approached that has more to do with spontaneous composition than written music, with the [...]

Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes release Double Portrait - tracklisting

Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes , two of the premiere pianists in Jazz, and also husband and wife, have joined forces to record their first collaborative album, Double Portrait , which will be released June 8, 2010 on EMI's Blue Note Records. The album is a sparkling set of four-hand piano duets that traverses many of the couple's musical touchstones including the great jazz composers ( Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson ), Great American Songbook composers ( George & Ira Gershwin, Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz ), and [...]

Everything Clicks for Benin-Born Guitarist Lionel Loueke

Everything Clicks for Benin-Born Guitarist Lionel Loueke Filed under: Around the World Like many artists who have explored and embraced music from across cultures, guitarist Lionel Loueke is wary about bringing exotic, unfamiliar sounds to mainstream audiences. Of course, in his case the audience in question is in Benin, where Loueke was born and raised. And the sounds are those of the modern jazz he embraced as a music student in Paris in the mid-'90s and has personalized in the decade since moving to the U.S. to study at the Berklee College of Music [...]

Chase Away The Blues…

Miles Davis - All Blues - 1964
I've been a tad bit under the weather this week, which makes blogging and just thinking a tough gig. Since listening to music is a key component to this thing, I guess I ain't been on my deen this week. Mainly, I've been relegated to editing & doing a lot of emails. My music listening? Well, when I'm in this space, I always revert to jazz. Always. It's my life preserver, keeping me balanced and motivated. Coincidentally, there's usually a 87% chance that the album I'll lean on the hardest (bar no genre) will always be Kind [...]
