The Dreichcast is so called because yesterday was fucking dreich . Dreich is another one of those wonderful Scots words which I, with my vague sort of RP/BBC/public school accent can't really pronounce properly, but I wish I could. Nevertheless it worked out pretty nicely actually, and despite the drizzle and general unpleasantness, Mrs. Toad and I went out for a wander, had some lunch, bought some immensely smelly cheese, and then went and got utterly scooshed at the Emily Scott album launch, and then on to Papi Falso at Henry's Cellar Bar. I really [...]

Tweet Listen to and download the MP3 for We Can't Enjoy Ourselves ' new song "Your Darkest Thoughts Will Shine" below. It's been a fair-few months since we last heard from New York 's We Can't Enjoy Ourselves , and since we last featured them they've been fighting off bidding wars from major labels, toured with U2, and saved the world from an alien invasion. Ok, so none of that actually [...]

If you scour the Interwebs long enough late at night, you're bound to come across something decent, which is exactly the case when I stumbled upon We Can't Enjoy Ourselves . They've just self-released their own album, One Belongs Here More Than You , and you can pick it up for the lucky "name your own price" tag. While the band might be from the States, they definitely have the dance-hall feel of British bands celebrated in the annals of Northern Soul. Give this a try, and get your feet [...]

Looking for some new jangly rock to swing to? Then look no further than Brooklyn indie band We Can't Enjoy Ourselves . They sent us their track "Back of My Bible" from their latest album 'One Belongs Here More Than You' and I'm digging it! Definitely has a brit-pop feel to it which I really like. Here is that track, plus album opener "Miss Maris Morris" . If you like what you hear you can pick up the whole thing as a 'name your own price' [...]

We Can't Enjoy Ourselves must be lying to us: they definitely sound like they are having the time of their life on the track "Miss Maris Morris". The jangly guitars are crisp and trebly, which juxtapose nicely with the full-bodied bassline. The band keeps the relatively simple chord progression from becoming redundant by turning it inside-out a few times over the 3 minutes and 40 seconds. I can't help but compare them to early Scottish post-punkers Orange Juice and, more recently, UK Brit-poppers Good Shoes, mainly because of Giovanni Saldarriaga's European-tinged vocals. It's hard to believe they're from Brooklyn and [...]
It's safe to say that the found footage that was used to craft this music video was not filmed specifically for "Put Your Blue Dress On," but, as you'll see, it matches up quite well. Then again, We Can't Enjoy Ourselves possess a classic edge to their sound that recalls the upbeat swing and sharp cut rock 'n' roll of decades past. So, it only seems fitting that this song and old footage suit one another in just the right ways. The piece was directed and edited by Will McCord. Download "Put [...]

Brooklyn's We Can't Enjoy Ourselves has been churning out some perfectly delightful pop ditties over the past several months, and it's only because of my rapidly declining cognitive skills that the band has failed to pop up here on MOKB. That all changes today with the appearance of Put Your Blue Dress On , a seamless and timeless slice of danceable pop pablum that comes complete with a public domain footage video with strangely fetishistic undertones. The song is found on the band's 2010 release, One Belongs Here More Than [...]

We loved Brooklyn-based indie secret We Can't Enjoy Ourselves so much that we decided to share that secret last month, when we asked them to headline our first showcase. They've got the most infectious melodies with jangly, vintage sounds and the heartwarming, nostalgic feeling of the good old days/'simpler times.' It's a really lovely feeling. They recently sent us a new song, "Stop Moving," which captures all these feelings perfectly. And if you see them live - which you definitely should - you really won't be able to stop moving. Download it below and embrace yourselves, [...]

You may remember that back in November I introduced We Can't Enjoy Ourselves to you guys, and hopefully your reaction was to stand up, lift your right knee up to your chest and then put it back down, then do the same thing with your left knee and then repeat ad-infinitum at speed. You get the picture? No? Well it's music to dance and jump to like a rabbid badger on caffeine pills. Now do you get the picture? Aaaaaaannyyywaayyyyy........a few days ago lead singer Giovanni sent me over a new tune [...]

Earlier this year I posted a new song from a recent band discovery going by the name We Can't Enjoy Ourselves . I was intrigued back then, and now with this new pop jam "Stop Moving", I'm ready to call myself a fan of the band. The awesome and unique voice of lead singer Blaine Harrison is still a big draw to me which is complimented nicely by the jangly sound of the guitars. Apparently a new LP from the band is currently in the works with more details coming soon. Download: We Can't Enjoy Ourselves [...]

The ground is starting to thaw and the air is getting back that moist smell of mud and life. Spring is (almost) here. We made it. Now here are some tunes to help you shake off the lingering effects of hibernation... My music listening habits tend to follow seasonal trends and, true to form, in Spring my musical palette expands to embrace the vibrancy of the season. Lush pop sounds and grand statements are what I gravitate towards, and you'll see that reflected in the Spring Mixtape. Following the arc of spring, Side [...]

We Can't Enjoy Ourselves - "Charming Man" In an honest tone, a man sings with aching heart to a girl that means more than anything to him. He makes no apologies for who he is, but insists there's more to him than she knows. It's about the dance between man and woman, one driven by love and affection. Supported by a pleasant round of doo wop back-up vocals and innocent '50s charm, this "Charming Man" keeps a certain amount of his grit with a bright, twangy chord progression that was born in a [...]

Over the Holidays and during this slow week back to the music world, we had some time to sift through the many emails we receive and our ears perked up to a band calling themselves We Can't Enjoy Ourselves . They are another group hailing from the indie hotspot of Brooklyn, NY featuring jangly twee pop eerily similar at times to Austin's own Hollywood Gossip . What strikes me as unique and noteworthy of this band are the vocals from lead singer Giovanni Saldarriaga. Can anyone else hear hints of Blaine Harrison from Mystery Jets ? You [...]
