A crash course in . . . Whelan's Ones To Watch

a Wolf Howling - Cloud Castle Lake
Starting today, Wednesday, and running for the next four days is Whelan's Ones To Watch Festival. More than 30 Irish bands will take to various Whelan's stages to show everyone just how strong 2011 is going to be. Some bands you may be familiar with, and more you will never [Read more]

HWCHs and The City

This is one of the best things about Hard Working Class Heroes. All over Dublin during the Hard Working Class Heroes weekend a selection of bands will be playing free gigs. This will hopefully give good exposure to the public. The full schedule is here: http://www.hwch.net/2010_city_ schedule.html Here's a few bands I'd recommend seeing: Thursday 7th: TOWER RECORDS 6.00 PM - The Gorgeous Colours [...]

Tuesday's Topical Threesome - The Irish at CMJ, NYC

Tuesday's Topical Threesome - The Irish at CMJ, NYC As far as I can see there are ten Irish bands and artists making the trip to NYC for this years CMJ Music Marathon. I just experianced our HWCHs but it's tiny in size compared to the CMJ in New York. Here are the details of where you will find the ten Irish artists. Tonight in L.A.: Andy Clockwise, Kim DiVine

Tonight in L.A.: Andy Clockwise, Kim DiVine [Birthday greetings go out today to songbird Nanci Griffith — now on to ways you can work off the holiday weekend hangover ...] July's free residencies bring some new flavors to the Eastside clubs: Australian transplant Andy Clockwise unleashes his biting, boisterous bar rock at Spaceland, where his track "Everybody's in a Band" ought to resonate with the locals. ... Fronted by a former pro surfer (though you'd never guess from the music), Alex Knost, Costa Mesa's Japanese Motors [pictured] invades the Echo. ... And [...]

SXSW 2009 Photos: The Irish

2009 was a good year for the Irish in Texas as there were 22 Irish artists showcasing in total. What was most obvious that SXSW was not endgame for many of these artists who had toured heavily in the US prior to the Austin gigs or who had solicited an impressive number of gigs while there. Fighting With Wire played 12 Austin gigs in a week, The Mighty Stef played nine, We Should Be Dead played six, The Urges played eight shows and Lisa Hannigan's last three stops on her [...]

SXSW: Telekinesis, the Duke Spirit, Silversun Pickups

SXSW: Telekinesis, the Duke Spirit, Silversun Pickups [Utter exhaustion vs. Saturday night at SXSW: Which will prevail?] Telekinesis (at the Parish) — Merge Records newbies Telekinesis seem to abide every diagram in the indie rock manual — its pop practices the loud/soft dynamic, a reverence for melody and a reliance on caffeinated percussion for propulsion. And as un-revolutionary as that is, the music created by one-man tornado Michael Lerner (who tours as part of a quartet) is not unremarkable. It's optimistic and sharply observational, and, live, it's [...]

SXSW 2009: Post Four

Behold! a few more songs we very like-to-love by artists scheduled to play at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas next month. Sorry about the generic titles this year for these SXSW posts. Last year it was Franglish and oh-so-chic. This year, well, as you see. (Fortunately it doesn't seem to affect the music.)
