Defunct Athens-based We Versus the Shark closed out the first night of 2008's PopFest with a quick 25-minute set. Their material seems to have become heavier (or just more frantic) since last year. Maybe this evolution has accelerated with the departure of Samantha Paulsen, but I haven't seen WVTS often enough to properly judge. After listening to the popfest sets from both last year and this year, I'd say the trio is just as enjoyable as the four-piece! We Vs. There was never really any question which album Pitchfork would pick as its #1 of the 2000s. However, a predictable conclusion to their countdown shouldn’t distract from the merits of the winner, Radiohead’s Kid A. As the follow-up to their massively successful OK Computer, Kid A’s glitchy electro beats and spacey reverb washes elicited mixed reaction at best. Suffice to say, fans and critics

I am certain this song will be in a 'summer fun" commercial at some point. I know it! Anyway, here's Metric's little homemade video for "Sick Muse." Enjoy! This hilarious spin-off cliche Norwegian Metal videos is perfect for NYC's trash metal champions, children . Their debut album, "Hard Times Hanging at the End of the World" is great throwback to fun and loud metal. Jolly good show! [...]
Sorry I have been M.I.A. for the past few weeks. I have actually been in the hospital, since apparently 22 is the new 78. Lots of backlogged posting to get caught up on, so keep an eye here over the next week for some stuff, including the long-awaited debut of derpferdheisshorst’s “Ziggy Stardust” cover. In honor of my days as the youngest person in the cardiac ward, this week’s theme is hearts. The medical accuracy of some of these songs may be suspect, but the sentiment rarely is. Amilia [...]

The year 2008 is nearly to an end and already there are a number of best of lists out there flying about on the Internet that I will undoubtedly be combing through over the next two weeks or so. I don’t know if this year was as solid of a year for me musically. I get the feeling that it wasn’t, but if it wasn’t I don’t think it missed by a whole lot in comparison to last year. Despite that there were still plenty of great releases to be heard and to be newly discovered at [...]

And here it is... the final Murmurmur cover as performed by Athens posthardcorers We Versus The Shark . And it is a Tears For Fears cover, not an REM cover. Oh well. I was really hoping for a cover of "Catapult" (youtube). No big woop. I will deal. I still think We Versus The Shark rock, and they are awesome for hooking up with donation based Quote Unquote Records on this project. Put a few bucks in their jar... here . Downloadable: [...]

If you like your indie-rock a little on volatile and caustic side with a little spazz-core thrown in for good measure, then Dirty Versions might be exactly the record you are looking for. We Versus The Shark recorded the album live with minimal overdubs in an attempt to get the as raw and direct a sound as possible. It shows. The album is a loud and abrasive blast of dizzying intensity that seems to want to uncontrollably veer into a million directions at once, but it’s also a little funky so you can [...]

Ok, I finally got these up, and it is one of the best shows I saw all year, so make sure to watch these. This was Samantha Paulsen's last ever show with the band, and they did a hell of a farewell: Part 1: Part 2: Part 3: Part 4: Part 5: As we reported last week , We Versus The [...]

Guess who never learned to chew with his mouth closed? I reviewed Pattern Is Movement months ago, concluding that they were weird, but amazing. Thursday night, at Under The Couch , Georgia Tech's student run venue, I learned that Pattern Is Movement is both weirder and more amazing in person. Amazing things about last night's show: We Versus the Shark opened - I've heard that their sound's been a bit off since switching guitarists (the new one doesn't sing). But they still played an [...]
