Scottish garage pop rockers Paws have announced a free show at Morgan's Pier on June 12th with We Were Promised Jetpacks . The trio made their fuzz rock debut last year with Cokefloat on FatCat Records and were charismatic enough at this year's SXSW to land on The Key's 10 Bands We Loved at SXSW list. Likely influenced by Pavement, Weezer and perhaps Dinosaur Jr, Paws create short and sweet sing-a-long nuggets that will get any crowd sweaty. Information for the free show can be found here . Only one month left until the small but charming IMMERGUT FESTIVAL, North of Berlin, is about to take our hearts once again. Glasgow three-piece Prides announce their arrival with a nasal and modulating synthesizer loop. Sitting just short of the five-note hook for MGMT's "Kids" in terms of pure catchiness, "Out Of The Blue" leverages this synth line against slamming percussion loops and a glittering backdrop of digitized sounds, an instantly memorable debut single. Sounding a bit like We Were Promised Jetpacks playing an Erasure cover, the winsome moral victories of Scottish music blend easily with the adolescent fatalism of synthesizer pop. Much of the charm of "Out Of The Blue" lies in the repeated lyrical [...]

We Were Promised Jetpacks released their sophomore album, In the Pit of the Stomach , two years ago and this disc (in my not-so-humble opinion) was one of the best British indie-rock discs that I've heard in quite some time. The BBC described the disc as " powered by an edgy, nervous hunger – a sense of being on the verge of getting exactly what you want but full in the knowledge and with the expectation that it won’t ever actually happen. " We Were Promised Jetpacks will be releasing a live album and [...]

So, after a couple of awesome gigs (Randolph's Leap and Paws) last week, I started to feel the live music bug again after a surprisingly long period without seeing any gigs but my own BAD FUN ones at Henry's. Nevertheless, a good run of stuff and the kind of weekend which felt like a little island of Spring in the middle of February seems to have cheered shit up around here and there are some fine things taking place this week to keep that particular bandwagon trundling along. Things kick off with the Pictish Trail [...]

Manchester again? Yes, Manchester again. Why Manchester again? Well I happen to be on the way down to London again for MORE MEETINGS! You know what the Cookie Monster is to cookies? Well I seem to be that to London meetings. Anyone would think I actually enjoyed trying to get work done on shitty East Coast Mainline WiFi, which is up and down like a whore's knickers (I got this expression from Mrs. Toad - don't blame me). Anyhow, on the way back I thought I would stop off in Manchester and visit my Granddad who [...]

Well it's a quiet week in Edinburgh this week from the looks of it. Or, at least, it is until Saturday, at which point all hell breaks loose. In any case, it's pretty much irrelevant to myself, as I am going to be down in Preston at Unconvention , talking about sustainable careers in music. I have to confess that I am not entirely sure what I will have to contribute, apart from agreeing that I too would like a sustainable career in music, but I shall do my best. Anyhow, while I am away [...]

Emotional rock never dies, it just changes it's delivery system every few years. The Vestals , a band with a churning and consumptive first single, "Perfect Pain," traffic in this maybe-insipid sentimental geography and the chorus is an archetype, waxing, "Say you'll stay the same/please don't change/it's a perfect pain." The refrain is rooted in three notes, the band modulating between them as the the arrangement, a chunkier Pains Of Being Pure At Heart or maybe We Were Promised Jetpacks playing twee music, unloads a carbonated strum pattern and chord resolutions [...]

Every Wednesday we will be featuring a Sweet Five! What's a Sweet Five you may ask? Well I'll drop you five sweet songs that you should listen to once a week, that will help you get over your hump-day and set sail towards the ever-nearing weekend! Ready? Okay! We Were Promised Jetpacks - This Is My House, This Is My Home It's only the first line of this song that you have to hear to barely understand their Scottish accents - but I've been [...]

Yes, I know that this post is a day late, but you'll have to forgive me as I have been away all weekend so this is the first real opportunity that I have had to draft something up. I have to admit that I am feeling decidedly rough, so there is a big risk that I might get a bit ramble-y, but hey that's nothing new. Hangover aside the one that is frustrating the fuck out of me this weekend is that we are currently having some problems with receiving emails to our Olive Grove accounts. I don't know about [...]
Regular visitors to this site will already be aware that I have a friend in the US by the name of Ryan who shares a lot of Jetpacks/Frabbit/Twilight Sad live recordings to share with you guys. The number of high quality bootlegs that he's sent my way is pretty damn phenomenal, now he's gone one better and sent me over a video of a full We Were Promised Jetpacks set recorded in Seattle back in 2010. The video was recorded in HD and it sounds fucking ace, anyway here it is in all of its glory, enjoy...

We Were Promised Jetpacks By Steve McGillivray May 26, 2012 I've only ever been to one gig in Dunfermline prior to this evening. That was to see an up and coming band, The Twilight Sad, play the opening of the revamped Jam Jar in town. Tonight I'm especially keen to see Jesus H Foxx who's debut album is just about the best thing I've heard this year. After wandering in the wrong direction I eventually find the venue thanks to a helpful arcade employee. As I walk [...]
Bloody hell, there's a lot been going on lately, since the last rambling news post there have been a shit load of announcements. Some of them good and some of them down right shite. I guess it's best to get the bad news out of the way first, as it's better to end on a high, right?! As I am sure of many of you will already be aware, the BBC have decided to call time on BBC Introducing in Scotland, Northern Ireland and [...]
