After last year's relatively sensible podcast (I think the BBC cameras scared us into some degree of sensibleness), this years is far, far less sensible. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it's probably a little more honest. This time around, as well as the more usual suspects of Messrs. Galloway, Reid, Thomas and myself, we are joined by The Two Jamies: Webster who manages Three Blind Wolves and Gilmour who manages We Were Promised Jetpacks. This is helpful because instead of drunken fuckwits gabbling at one another, we actually have [...]

WWPJ closed out Terrorbird's Wednesday afternoon showcase, turning in a blistering 30 minute set that caused at least partial hearing damage for a good portion of the house. Miguel, rocking his newly styled "Tesfaye fade", put on for all the R&B stans at the SOBs' Belmont showcase. Mixing in refashioned live versions of hits "Quickie" and "All I Want Is You" with newer less-commercial material like "Adorn", Miguel seemed to satisfy the mostly packed Belmont. If for nothing else, (the set did come off a bit weird), [...]
The South by Southwest madness has already started here in Austin with the Film and Interactive festivals and SXSW Music officially starts on Wednesday. From various sources I have compiled a list of 59 Scottish gigs over the next few days. My head is already spinning. Some caveats on this list. First of all, day [...]

SXSW has it all in March, namely tons of music from artists you'll be hearing about more in the coming months. In a small series preluding the music session that goes from March 13-18, we'll be focusing in on some of the collective efforts of labels and PR companies collecting in Austin. We wish we could cover every group that is playing down there, but as Bandcamp states, there are over 400 artists going to be there. If you have a label or PR company, big or small, that you want featured, email us with your lineup card. [...]

Sticking to your schedule at South by Southwest (SXSW) takes discipline and heaping portions of luck. You better swallow this pill now: You will not be able to see all of the bands you want to see, even if you are trying to be conservative with your schedule. Think about the fact that every year in Austin the crowds get bigger and bigger, yet the venues stay the same size. Clubs and bars will hit capacity faster than ever this year, so it's time you have some back up options, and some outlying parties to check out. [...]
The 2012 SXSW Music Festival kicks off next week with 12 Scottish bands set to invade Austin. Unfortunately the weather forecast suggests that they may be bringing the Scottish weather with them. Nevertheless I'm sure that the barbeques will still be fired up and the margaritas will still flow. On Monday we'll publish the full [...]

There's an array of British and Irish up and coming talent heading over to SXSW Music Festival this month! SXSW Music and Media Conference have spent 25 years being one of the world's leading musical showcases, and returns in 2012 to continue the tradition. SXSW showcases roughly 2,000 musical acts from around the globe, representing well over 50 different countries. Each year the finest musical exports from the UK head over to Austin to perform on this platform, showcasing to an international audience of music lovers and industry bods. We've compiled a list of the most up and [...]

I was scrolling through my Twitter today, and chuckled (and RTed) over something Wil Wheaton said: "Girlfriend in Tacoma?" "I know, I know..." "It's SERIOUS!" So of course I started thinking about Morrissey, Morrissey songs, and lesbian Latino girl bands. Whut. Anyway. I had been listening to the 2009 We Were Promised Jetpacks album all day prior to that, which sounds a bit like a happier Morrissey, if he was Scottish. ... [...]

The Guardian With her tenure in Ash , as sidewoman to the likes of KT Tunstall and Bat For Lashes and a solo career that's yielded three good albums, Charlotte Hatherley has pretty well established herself as a purveyor of sharp, smart power-pop and more than a bit of a guitar heroine. But apparently she's been hiding another side of herself that worships at the altar of '80s-vintage electro-pop and that side has now surfaced under the guise of Sylver Tongue . So far there's just the one single to represent [...]

With the Super Bowl and the Grammys in the rear-view, there's been plenty of opportunity for advertisers to boost their indie cred by filling ads with the latest buzz bands. So that brings us to another edition of Commercial Watch , where you can see which of your favorite bands and songs are being harvested for mass consumption via beer, phone, clothes and car ads. The commercials are embedded below with MP3s included. Make sure to click the continue reading link to see the full post. The Grammys: We Are Music [...]

First off apologies for the lack of a Friday Freebies post yesterday, a combination of going to the Twilight Sad and a teething baby meant that I just plain old ran out of time. Fear not though as it will be a double roll over next week. Anyway, that's enough apologies for one week, onwards and upwards with this weeks We've Got It Covered post which focuses on some of the Scottish artists that have been selected to play at this years South By South West (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. I appreciate that a lot of you will already [...]

We Were Promised Jetpacks performed "Human Error" and "Circles and Squares" on Last Call with Carson Daly . Watch both videos below and pick up the album In The Pit Of The Stomach on iTunes , Amazon MP3 , CD Social Bookmarking...

Thanks in part to the H.O.R.D.E. Tour the mid to late '90s could easily be looked at as the golden age of jambands, with regional bands turning into national touring acts thanks to an open-minded and enthusiastic fan base that where eager to discover the next big thing. Among the crop of bands that sprang up during this boom was The Big Wu , who formed at St. Olaf College in 1992 and earned a fervent following around the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Minnesota-based act , who hold the distinction of being the first band on at [...]
One of the biggest reasons why SL loves doing Coachella Daze posts is because they make us listen to artists that we usually don't make time to listen to. We Were Promised Jetpacks is one such band that I'm glad I have started listening to. Formed in 2003, the Scottish indie rock group took six years to release their well received first album " These Four Walls " in 2009. The group released their sophomore LP " In the Pit of the Stomach " about a season ago in Oct 2011. WWPJ is (imo) apart of a dying [...]

Neil Thomas Douglas As I understand it, yesterday was Robbie Burns Day and while I may have missed out on my annual tradition of posting something suitably Scottish to mark the day - a tradition I've marked exactly zero times in the past forever years - I'm going to make up for it a little bit by leading with some Scots-related content. Firstly, We Were Promised Jetpacks have finally scheduled a second North American tour in support of last year's In The Pit Of The Stomach [...]

Edinburgh's We Were Promised Jetpacks released their sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach last fall via FatCat Records to critical acclaim. Artist: We Were Promised Jetpacks Genre: Indie Rock, Post-Punk Myspace Facebook Twitter Honestly, the band's name along should guarantee a spot in your busy schedule at Coachella. Anything with jetpacks is awesome in my books. No seriously, jetpacks are awesome. And so is this band. A little dark at times, but they have so much energy that packs a hard punch that will surely send your music senses off the charts. Now, if only they would fly around the stages of Coachella wearing [...]

last.fm I've been meaning to write up Without Why , the debut album from Rose Elinor Dougall , for well over a year now but for whatever reason never actually got around to it. And while normally almost year and a half on from its release is too long to give a record props, the fact that Ms Dougall is back on the radar with a new stopgap release while she wraps up work on her second album is good enough reason for me to revisit it. If her [...]
