Thanks to the One Little Indian PR team in the UK, I've learned about a blisteringly cool band from Edinburgh, Scotland called We Were Promised Jetpacks (great name, that). Here's the fab rockin' single out in May - track called Quiet Little Voices . Smokin' good rock for any fans of Arctic Monkeys, Chameleons UK, early Jam and more... More Information: "We Were Promised Jetpacks' 'Quiet Little Voices' represents the lead-up to a debut album that is already highly touted, several months before release. The [...]

'Quiet Little Voices' is the debut single from We Were Promised Jetpacks, who have an album coming in June titled These Four Walls . They have upcoming dates in teh UK, so hopefully we'll see the addition of some Irish ones soon. They're an Edinburgh post-punk quartet, who on the evidence of blistering debut single 'Quiet Little Voices', should be huge! friends/countrymen/label mates of frightened rabbit (who i have on pretty heavy rotation at the moment) are we were promised jetpacks , who are frighteningly young but rather good with it. if these two tidbits are anything to go by, the album (out in june on fatcat) should be rather ace. they seem to have knack for turning a simple hook into a floor stomping anthem. they've just played sxsw (the lucky little bastards) and are now touring the uk. ::: we were promised jetpacks - quiet little voices ::: we were promised [...]

The South x Southwest Festival's musical party burst into existence in Austin, Texas last week and the annual buzz machine has been super busy amongst our fellow bloggers. It's a bright and enthusiastic time of year for those into new music, as the stories and tales from the multitude of performances seep through to us. If you're there you can't possibly get around to seeing everyone and if you're not there you will inevitably be left to follow any blogged scraps as they appear. WINTER GLOVES [...]

AH, it's the first day of spring! I know Austin has got to be gorgeous on this day, and hope everybody down there are SXSW is having a great time. I am glad I'm not dealing with the crowds though. I plan on taking it easy this weekend- after having pretty well done myself in over the St. Paddy's weekend. Anyway, another week, another mix- enjoy. Song We Were Promised Jetpacks ~ " Ships With Holes Will Sink " mp3 download (via eardrums music ) Besides having one of the cooler band names I've heard in a while (reminds me of this shirt ), this Scottish foursome is planning to take SXSW by storm. WWPJ is also scheduled to release a new album in May. Kinda sounds like Mogwai (yeah the Scotland thing probably the comparison) covering Thursday's [...]
My showcase pick for Friday is the Great Escape showcase that will be taking place at Maggie Mae's Rooftop. Since I'll actually be going to the Great Escape again this year, I'm not foaming at the mouth with jealously while writing this post... for once. 8:00pm: The Young Republic ( Myspace // "Black Duck Blues" [mp3]) 9:00pm: The Postelles ( Myspace // "123 Stop" [mp3]) [...]

Frank Yang For brevity's sake, I'm busting up the days and nights of SxSW into separate posts. Of course, a greater volume of posts doesn't exactly equal brevity, does it. Anyways. As with last year, photos, multimedia and assorted sundry links for all acts covered will come in the following week. I started Wednesday with a plan. It took exactly no time for said plan to go off course. I'd meant to start with Henry Clay People at Paradise but a promise of free food and beverages at the [...]
Gosh, is that another month gone already? Looks like it has, so it's time for another Music Alliance Pact, where the world's blogs come to The Daily Growl, courtesy of the hard work of MAP organiser Jason Pop Cop. This month he's outdone himself by providing HTML script to make ...

Fifteen of the 1,800 acts playing at the SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST music convention/festival/party in Austin, Texas this week are Scottish - and only about half of that lot are decent. So let's dwell on the good stuff. Camera Obscura's new album, My Maudlin Career, is a beauty and could quite possibly be the one that takes the twee Glaswegians out of the underground. Twin Atlantic , [...]

Hailing from the same Glaswegian rock scene which has produced Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad, with "Quiet Little Voices," We Were Promised Jetpacks answer one pressing question: What if Fugazi's Ian McKaye was Scottish and was a big Franz Ferdinand fan. Adam Thompson's vocals have a stiff, preachy quality to them, the rhythm section moves and bounces with ease, and the guitars are angular, in that Nineties sort of way, the one where no one knows what it means to play angular guitar, but you know the sound. They're sharp and pointed, and provide the punch which [...]

Here's March's edition of the Music Alliance Pact. For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. It's sort of like the WTO without the human rights violations. This month we've welcomed French blog SoundNation and Denmark's All Scandinavian to bring the total participation to 24 nations. Our contribution this month includes a beautiful, budding track from Florida-based Viernes . Nathaniel's decree [...]
So if you've seen what I referred to yesterday as my "final" SXSW schedule (note: it wasn't - I've already updated it), you've probably noticed that I have about 150 or so different bands on my list. I obviously won't see all of them, but they're all really good acts that I'd love to see if I had the time. What you don't see, however, are all of the bands that I will be adding to my list over the next few days based on word-of-mouth. I know for a fact that several of [...]

Disclaimer: I do not know Austin, and this schedule does not take into account the distance between locations. This is a fantasy, after all! If you are going to be there in person, obviously, you're going to have to make some painful choices and accept that you can't see everyone because there are unavoidable conflicts. I think it's a good idea to know what your alternatives are at any given time so you can be flexible. Watch the beginning and ending times on the schedule because some stage times are short. Many bands are scheduled several [...]
