If you read my little prelim post on the Polaris this year, you'll know I'm a huge fan of the new Timber Timbre record ( review ). I actually never thought the Taylor would show up here in Halifax, let alone with a quality supporting act like The Weather Station - aka Tamara from Entire Cities. Tamara finally released her debut full length this year - The Line ( review ) - which is a powerful, chaotic folk record chock o block full of sadness and beauty. So [...]
From Toronto, Ontario The Weather Station are based around the songs and singing of Tamara Lindeman. The band are releasing their debut full length album, The Line, on April 28th. They have a pastoral, dreamy and mostly acoustic sound to them and Tamara has a beautiful and haunting voice. This is contemplative & contemporary folk music at its very very best.East - The Weather Station

myspace As you sift through the songs on Tamara Lindeman 's new record, The Line , you are struck by the sadness of the affair. Not the classic melancholy of another "break-up" record (which this could be, but every time I listen I feel like Tamara is expressing the emotion that hits you after something more painful and harder to get past), but the sadness that comes when you see someone losing their innocence and youth and growing up faster than they might want. Now, I can't claim to know Tamara or [...]

The Family Straw is still living out of suitcases at Grandma's house. I got a few emails this past week that I simply can't wait until we are home to post about. Tamara Lindeman is the female Bon Iver. She used music to cope with some tough emotional times. I can't say that I am happy that she was so sad, but for her to produce such amazing music, I kind of hope she never cheers up. Her band's debut - The Line - comes out [...]

As a Canadian, one has a reputation to protect. Other than the obvious traits such as good looks, massive talent in winter sports, ability to intake an entire pint with a "sip" there is the other one. We are nice people. With that in mind, how can I continue to be sexist in my playlists and single out musicians simply due to their gender - I mean it just isn't right people! As a Canadian, I think this playlist will be a non gender specific collection of music. Hey, someone had to point out the elephant in the room, it [...]

Frankly, I find it shocking the website has been up for over a week, and this is my first music post. I'd planned to write posts about last weekend's Rock n' Roll Anniversary , Singing Lamb Launch , and Out of This Spark shows, but the update, and the new Event Calendar (move your mouse over it, why dontcha, and see what happens!) ate up all my waking time. So the next two days are going to be all about the music, starting with Wombat Wednesdays . (That's Basement [...]

At the start of the year I wanted to make this site more than just a random music blog and try and get a bit more involved in the Edinburgh music scene. Basically, I've not lived here long and I wanted to make some friends. Also, from a purely ideological point of view, I think that it's all very well to talk music and so on, but actually being able to genuinely support people who you know and like and who are really trying to make things happen is a good thing to be doing. I wanted, I [...]

God damn. Saskatchewan is a long, flat province. It was almost like we were in a Saturday Night Live skit when they kept the same background scrolling. We drove 1000 KM and ended up getting to Manitoba. SK has lots to offer - wheat, flat land, cattle, trucks, and road kill. I kid, as it was a peaceful drive and Nic and I spent long hours just staring off into the vast openness of the Land of the Living Skies. It was so open that the exhaust from a jet plane looked like a huge tear in the [...]

Ontario is a hot bed for challenging folk music right now. Countless acts are cropping up and each one seems to push the limits of the genre in a different way. Tamara Lindeman - aka The Weather Station - is no exception. This little EP opens with a bang, as Tamara's gospel/soul vocals boom over slow drawn strings, banjo and noise filled electric work. The song is only lasts for 3 minutes, but the anticipation she builds works well. You keep expecting her to take the easy way out and let the song break into a gallop, but [...]
