Event/Spot: One Decade of Dance @ RISE...Let's Celebrate!

Event/Spot: One Decade of Dance @ RISE...Let's Celebrate! It's no secret that Boston's Nightlife wouldn't be the same without Rise . When the lights are turned on at your local Bar, the lights and the music begin to blast at 306 Stuart Street. For a town where 2:15am usually means a Cab home, for the members of Rise it's just the continuation of a night to remember. To many the membership is not just an affiliation, but a family and a lifestyle...a place where Music always takes center stage. Annie Lennox once said: " Anyone and everyone has the capacity to respond to music. It's a gender-free, [...]

The Moondoggies - Interview with Kevin Murphy

The Moondoggies - Interview with Kevin Murphy Photo by Greg Lutze The Moondoggies hail from Seattle, and the first thing you might think when you hear them is that their sound is a wash 'n' tumble of retro-rock styles. It's both easygoing and rocking-but the comfort of the Moondoggies' music conceals the fact that they are, in all the important ways, unique. Unlike other "retro" acts, they're not aping a particular performer (like the Black Crowes were doing the Faces, or Lenny Kravitz stole from Hendrix). Some songs are hymns, some are pop tunes, and some are out 'n' out [...]

Ze Weekend

Ze Weekend Lots of rain. Lots and lots of rain. I had an early night on Friday because I was up at the crack o dawn to head to Galway to do a thing on Imeall for TG4 'way way back the way' as my Galway auntie would say. I enjoyed the train, though, lots of newspaper reading and chilling out. I got home at about 6pm and fully planned on going to Cake @ the Academy, [...]

Weekend Checklist

Weekend Checklist Dillinger Four, Heiruspecs, and Big Business make this weekend your last chance to make 2008 count.

Is Monday Too Soon to Start Thinking About the Weekend?

THE SEA AND CAKE - Weekend
Perhaps. But will that stop me from enjoying " Weekend " from the Sea and Cake 's latest album, Car Alarm ? Not on your life. Car Alarm was one of the finest albums of 2008--it just missed our Best Music of 2008 list--and is also probably the finest TSaC album since their lovelorn classic, The Fawn . Watch "Weekend" --Gabi Knight [...]

Ze Weekend: Apes, Parties, Mario Kart

Ze Weekend: Apes, Parties, Mario Kart The Fight Like Apes gig @ the Academy on Friday was excellent. The crowd was pretty excitable and rose to the occasion of FLApes' largest headline show as much as the band did. Every song (even the new stuff) was greeted with huge cheers, an encore was demanded, and chants of 'suplex backbreaker' echoed long after they had left the stage for good. There are a good few videos on YouTube from the gig. Here's one: I hung around for a bit of No Disko (why the K?), but was home early [...]

"I go through life like a Karate Kid"

Dream Phone Commercial!
Quote of the year perhaps from Ms Britney Spears? I enjoyed the documentary last night. Even though it was clearly designed to make you feel sorry for her and realise 'she's back' and her year of going absolutely nutso was just a little blip that is now adjusted, oh, and don't mention the fact that she's lost her kids! But still, she came across as likeable and witty, if a little lost and depressed. And she looks amazing. So, Britters is a little redeamed from her lacklustre preformance on X Factor on Saturday night. Thank GOD Ruth is [...]

Happy Weekend y'all

Happy Weekend y'all After watching what should hopefully be the highlight of the year - the Late Late Late Toy Show - tonight, I'm a gonna hit Q&A @ ALT. There's a feature in this month's State featuring a picture of my pretty friend Zac Efron Brian. Then, tomorrow night, it's Pantibar's 1st birthday. Rock.

Ze weekend

Ze weekend It's cold this morning, innit? On Friday, myself, YoCo and Jane dropped into the Tommy Hilfiger launch on Grafton St. It's a nice shop. Smells like a drawing room. Tommy Hilfiger seemed nice too. He's wrinklier than I thought. I mainly went to see if his daughter Ally was there, but alas she was not. Remember Rich Girls ? I maintain Rich Girls was seriously underlooked reality TV programme. It was basically the precursor to The Simple Life, The Hills, Living On The Edge, maybe even shades of Gossip Girl. It was great TV while [...]

B-Movie Nowhere Girl

Pat Hull to Pull in to Portland for Three-Day Stint

Pat Hull to Pull in to Portland for Three-Day Stint Chico troubadour Pat Hull , along with his band, was one of the many reasons I regretted moving away from my formerly tranquil college hovel. Along with an inherent talent for songwriting, Hull's unassuming agenda provided him audiences with literally every type of band and showgoer lurking in the pubs surrounding CSU, Chico (including my own abomination, the Ramones cover band, Pinhead). Immediate reactions were to Hull's Neil Young-huffing-helium vocal range, but after those early assessments, we all realized that he was a goddamn genius (Sample lyric: " I will not forget the days that we spent struggling for [...]

Ben Sollee Sets Sights on Hawthorne Theater this Saturday

Ben Sollee Sets Sights on Hawthorne Theater this Saturday The indelible cello skill of songwriter and virtuoso Ben Sollee will be on display this Saturday, November 22nd at the Hawthorne Theater. Sollee's latest full-length Learning To Bend (not to mention his EP released this year, Something Worth Keeping , which featured My Morning Jacket's Jim James), exhibits diverse arrangements, with both jam-worthy compositions and folk-ish storytelling tendencies to reveal a tender and hugely talented songsmith (see Sollee's diss track "Dear Kanye" for further immersion of his worldly awareness, not to mention his apparent brass pair of balls!). Sollee's ambitions have yielded him [...]

Leona Lewis X Factor - RUN [15/11/08]
Being alcohol-free since I got back from New York is fun. It means I'm not hungover on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and get more stuff done. As a result, this weekend was a hive of boozeless activity. Friday : went to Tainer Bang's apartment in the sky. I have been getting into MTV's 'Living On The Edge', which is just not cool, but I can't help it. Played the new James Bond game on the Wii. Then went for coffee with Mishy and Dan Den the Photee Man and Tainer before heading to [...]

DJ Anna the Cat

DJ Anna the Cat Kicking your cat Friday off in style--AND keeping it oh-so-relevant--here's a picture of DJ Anna the Cat, courtesy of local musician Corrina Repp. Corrina's band band Tu Fawning is playing the Doug Fir this Sunday with the Nick Jaina Band (anyone else have a total rock star crush on that guy?) and That One Dude From Blind Pilot. 9 pm, $10.

Radio Exile mp3 Mixtape: Vol. 14 Side A

Yay, we're back for the 14th edition of the Radio Exile mp3 Mixtape. Today, we present to you Side A and we'll have Side B up on Friday morning, which is great, so come check out what we've been listening to the last two weeks. It's a nice sampling of some really great indie stuff and a few "name" acts as well, so take a listen and let us know what you think below. In this edition: Kanye West , Calico Horse , Vertigo , The Wrens , Heritage [...]

Saturdayeeyayeeyay

Woke up this morning (got myself a gun) to a beautiful sunny day. So instead of going out, I watched every single Pink video ever on TMF. Then the weather got shit. Woe is the world. So I went to meet YoCo and co for lunch @ Busy Feet. My sandwich was greasy. Then we went to the car boot sale at the Bernard Show. I didn't buy anything, but the mulled wine was YUMSIES. It started pissing rain then, so I jumped in a taxi to Ragin's and now we are drinking hot chocolate. In [...]
