If you like loud, dirty, raucous rock and roll, you're in for it Saturday at the Twilight, as described by Toby Carroll in this weeks paper: WOODS, METH TEETH, THE BLIMP, MOM, EAT SKULL (Twilight Café and Bar, 1420 SE Powell) Ominous and catchy, lo-fi and expansive, New York's Woods land firmly in the outsider school of indie rock. This is heady stuff, less concerned with the perfect hookâ€"though their hooks can indeed be memorableâ€"and more with constructing dense, obtuse sonic structures. (Or, the concise version: Remember when indie rock felt weird? This band [...]
A regrettable part of being a music journalist is the inevitability that you WILL miss the boat on a lot of great bands, and a lot of great musicians. If you think about it, there's no way possible to keep up with it all, and I've taken in the past few years the route of the "classics" - mainly '70s and early '80s punk rock and late-'60s folk and psychedelia. It's embarrassing to engage in discussions about a lot of bands who've come out in the last five years and have no idea what I'm talking about; or even bands [...]

Tonight, quite possibly the Earth's most dominate and dizzying drummer will bring his 45-minute concerto "Necromancer" to the Doug Fir stage. Zach Hill's potent ability to boggle you with what sounds like tripleted bass pedal work and frantic tom, snare and hi-hat battering hits you like a Humboldt bong rip. And although I refrain from toking GANJ, I can definitely see how experts compare Zach Hill to the likes of Buddy Rich and Keith Moon. Check it out for yourself here in clip from a performance with his seminal NorCal duo Hella:

The Sea and Cake, Car Alarm ( Thrill Jockey) MP3 : "Weekend" Not really famous for straying the course, Car Alarm is an album that you would expect to come from Chicago's the Sea and Cake . If you're into the band, then odds are you know exactly what to expect, and you will dig it. And why wouldn't you? All the key elements have been assembled for a typically great Sea and Cake record: Sam Prekop's [...]

Hit Kiss @ The Tivoli last night with the ADHD crew after pre-gaming in Tainer Bang's; Ragin Spice, Lucy, Dan, Brian Fucking Galwey, Lynn, Triona, Mishy, Karl, Helena, Baby Helen, Nikki... don't think I'm missing anyone. It was funsies, especially the amazing dance-off between myself and Baby Helen that - and I don't think I'm really blowing this out of proportion - momentarily stopped the world from turning it was so awesome. Baby Helen won though, DANG. Then we ate everything in the universe in Charlies. Tonight, it's poker night with Tribune heads. My [...]

Well, well, well. After a CRACKING night down at SoundCheck on Thursday, I brushed off my chest infection and missed my flight to London in the morning due to a passport disaster. I actually got so angry with the Ryanair people that I think my anger came full circle and an eerie calm washed over me. That said, I still thought about running on to the runway and sabotaging every one of their fucking hidious flying tubs of Utterly Butterly. But I didn't. Everything happens for a reason, and on the next (Aer Lingus) flight I [...]
In 1977 een dikke nummer 1 notering voor 'Do it anyway you wanna' van Peoples Choice, met dat mooie jazzorgeltje, 30 jaar later de eclectro weekend classic. Een langere versie voor het geluid: en een korte voor de gerse video:

My friend Sarah launched her first book on Friday night. I've started reading it, and it's excellent. It's called 'Where No One Can Hear You Scream' and is about murder and assault in the Wicklow Mountains. Go buy it! After that, me, Tiger and YoCo went up to Tainer Bang's to play shithead, our new favourite card game (next to poker, of course.) On Saturday, I got the dorsh out to AdoFemBo's for some MeNoFemBo recording. We now have an awesome new song that I won't say anything more about until it's up on [...]
Your Weekend Can Be Better Baseball will be all over the place this weekend with the Cubs heading to LaLaLand on the brink of disaster and the Sox coming back to town. There's also Fashion Focus and Chicago Arts Month...

(photees from FionnTimes)
Right now I'm about to have a pow wow with Tainer Bang's family (minus FionnTimes) which involves parsnip, ginger, chili and lemon soup with some nice red wine. Tainer Bang makes the best fucking soup in the universe. Then I'm going to Fight Like Apes! Should be a cracking gig. After that, I'm gonna do a mini DJ slot in Spy and then early to bed, early to rise. Tomorrow morning, I'm meeting up with the final Kidney (it's the final kidney, do do do do do do do do doooo) aka FionnTimes [...]

Met TodaysArt voor de deur nog even fijn electroën met Man Parrish - Hip hop (bebop) uit 1982. Een voor de video, een voor de geluidskwaliteit.

You know when sometimes you can't wait for the weekend, you accidently make Friday night your weekend? No. Right. Well, anyway, that's what I did. Went to Tainer Bang's after work where she was with Lucy and Davih. They were watching the episode of the L Word where Dana dies because Davih, for some reason, loves it, and always makes everyone watch it to depress us even more. Also, everyone can do a really good impression of Alice at the funeral, "DANA WAS GAY." It's pretty easy. I really [...]

Here Comes The Weekend Friday morning started early with our radio show on WLUW, then to an appointment, now the Cubs game and later a Comedy Tour Going Away Party. Full day - rock the weekend folks. And we'll see...
I've had an unfortunate time for a couple of days; sick stomach, having to take some time off, and eventually doing my back in VERY STUPIDLY on Saturday night @ the Academy while attempting to lift Fionn (who is very tall and FYI, not liftable.) So, there's an awful lot of codeine coursing through my veins at the moment. As a result, I'm having amazing ideas and then forgetting them a couple of minutes later. Should probably start writing them down. Meanwhile, back at the Phantom 105.2-shaped ranch, I'll be presenting Front Row (12noon - 2pm) [...]
