Iconic experimental rock outfit Ween has called it quits, according to frontman Aaron Freeman. Speaking with RollingStone.com , Freeman explained that the decision had been contemplated for nearly a decade, even though the band remains on speaking terms. "It's time to move on," Ween said, adding that he was retiring the Gene Ween moniker. "For me it's a closed book. In life sometimes, in the universe, you have to close some doors to have others open... There's no, 'Goddamn that such and such!' For me, I'd like to think it's a door I can close [...]

Aaron Freeman, known to many of our readers as Gene Ween, dropped a bombshell on Rolling Stone when he told the magazine that he's "retiring Gene Ween." When pressed about whether that meant the end for HT faves Ween , Freeman responded "Pretty much, yeah. It's been a long time, 25 years. It was a good run." [Photo by Allison Taich] Freeman has been battling to stay sober and for Ween's NYE run in Denver, which may go down as the group's last [...]

White Denim 's James Petralli found this old Tascam portastudio in his garage over the weekend, so he took to Facebook to field some requests for covers. Classics from Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, the White Stripes , and a few others made the cut, with some help coming from WD guitarist Austin Jenkins on a couple tracks. Check James' take on Elvis Costello 's "Alison" below, and download the whole bunch here . mp3: James Petralli of White Denim :: Alison
I'm currently finishing up a project for an online graduate-level course on creativity. While the center of the course is focused on pedagogy, the overriding idea is that creative minds are uniquely designed to take known materials (and their associations) and whip them all into something most folks could never imagine possible. If I [...]

For the April 19th episode of the Fuse television show Hoppus on Music , comedian Christian Finnegan shared a five-minute clip of a fishing trip he took with noted fisherman Mickey "Dean Ween" Melchiondo . Deaner, a licensed fishing guide , has been taking customers out on his boat, The Archangel, for guided fishing tours over the past few years. In this five-minute clip from the program, Deaner faces off against Finnegan in a competition to catch the most fish. Along the way, Melchiondo discusses [...]

I always confused Casey Kasem (1932-present) and Dick Clark(1929-2012) to the detriment of Richard. Banal music personalities who introduced top 40 to America. Eventually Danny Terrio from Dance Fever did a number on the youth but Dick's show held on for a long time. Agreeably Dick Clark America's Oldest Teenager show American Bandstand initially broadcast from Philadelphia then moved to Hollywood lasted from 1957 to 1987 and was more popular but Casey's explosive diarrhea moments made him infamous. Here he is sampled in the U2 [...]
Even as part of the brilliantly twisted Ween, Aaron Freeman has an old kind of pop sensibility. What makes Ween so tremendous is that they juxtapose an old-time country track like "Drifter in the Dark" with one of the most fucked-up sounds ever put to record: "Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)". Now, Gene Ween has shed his pseudonym and strode out on his own as Aaron Freeman, releasing an album of Rod McKuen covers titled, Marvelous Clouds . Without any originals, though, it's tough to determine what an Aaron Freeman solo album truly sounds like. Freeman exclusively uses [...]
Face it, we all like a good lyrical smackdown, and the art of the kiss-off line (or, indeed, entire kiss-off song) is one of the most time-honored and enduring in music. Good kiss-offs can take many forms — they can be subtle and sarcastic, or blunt and brutal, or just flat-out hilarious. Either way, there have been many, many good ones committed to tape over the years, and we've always had an ear for a biting turn of phrase — so we're counting down 30 of the best after the jump. As ever, we're open to suggestions, so let us [...]
Aaron Freeman, who is best known as Gene Ween, will soon release Marvelous Clouds , his 13-song tribute to the poet and songwriter Rob McKuen. We've covered Ween on Glorious Noise before, back when they played the Royal Oak Music Theater in 2010 ... 1. Ween - "Roses Are Free" . A great song in its own right, but also noteworthy as the Ween cover Phish rolls out pretty regularly. It's from the classic 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese . Full show: April 14, 2011 - War Memorial, Nashville, TN 2. Ween - "The Mollusk" . Some seriously ELP style keyboard action going on in this one. He's using a [...]
Here's David Lynch 's self-directed video for his new single, Crazy Clown Time. It's a lovely bit of lo-fi madness from the master surrealist and the tune sounds like a collaboration between Neil Young and Ween - it's brilliant - check out the video below: Don't have nightmares now... Lynch 's Crazy Clown Time album is out now on Sunday [...]

Human Toilet Human Toilet Self-Release 20 January 2012 by Hugh Platt There's something about the way the debut record from Human Toilet makes me feel that seems to makes me want to follow up every sentence in this review by typing the short, but succinctly direct two-word sentence epithet of "FUCK YOU". Just how there isn't a [...]
