The Welcome Wagon got my attention because they have been working with Sufjan Stevens on their debut album Welcome to the Welcome Wagon , which will be out Dec. 9th on the Asthmatic Kitty Label. Their music is often described as gospel/folk, but you don't need to be a religious hippie to appreciate it. Vito Aiuto, the male half of The Welcome Wagon, was kind enough to answer a few questions for Pigeons and Planes: P&P: I know you started out making music with your wife in your home. This struck a [...]
I am, of course, scared of gospel music. But take God out of the equation, add Surfjan Stevens on the production console and an old Danielson Famile tune and this is what you get. That's right kids it's cheer up Wednesday! There's even a banjo , and so much jingly jangly goodness you'll forget all about bleak Tuesday in a second. Hurrah!

The album will be called Welcome and the tracklist looks like this: Track listing: 1. Up On A Mountain 2. Sold! To The Nice Rich Man 3. Unless the Lord the House Shall Build 4. He Never Said A Mumblin' Word 5. Hail To The Lord's Anointed 6. But For You Who Fear My Name 7. American Legion 8. You Made My Day 9. Half A Person 10. Jesus 11. I Am A Stranger 12. Deep Were His Wounds, And [...]

Indie folk duo The Welcome Wagon have announced the release of their debut album. Welcome To The Welcome Wagon will be released on December 9th. The duo, consisting of The Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique, have put together a record described as a collection of 'hymns, pop covers, and originals'. The album was produced by Sufjan Stevens. You can get a free MP3 for the song "Sold! To The Nice Rich Man!" here: DOWNLOAD [...]

A very Happy Halloween from all of us to you! Between our "Trick or Treats" video series and Halloween To Do List , we've tried our very best to provide you with a few early treats leading up to the spookiest day of the year. But now that Halloween is finally upon, we figured we'd do something extra, especially since Ryan Adams tickets purchases and such limited our candy fund for this year. Below you'll find one last tasty treat, virtual style, with a collection of this week's best singles and remixes along with a [...]

Abe Vigoda look more like zombie mimes than skeletons in the West Currie-directed clip for the title track for the title track from the their second record, but the video's camera work and editing perfectly echo the song's rhythmic upswing, making for a striking, ghoulish rave-up. It gets even more secret-society celebrational when the California quartet remove the face paint and get down next to the local factory. Think of it as a collision between this + this , or thereabouts.
I posted a track by The Welcome Wagon a while back with some info on the husband/wife duo, so check that post if you're interested. I'm a big fan of Sufjan Stevens, and The Welcome Wagon definitely have the same type of sound and have worked with him in the past, so I'm going to keep my ears open for them. More is always better, especially when it comes to the Friday Mixtape. This week's edition is particularly jam-packed, a mix of music's best new singles and remixes as well as a few songs from some artists we strongly suggest you check in. Add in a few special treats, aka Of Montreal's rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (courtesy NYCTaper ) and this mixtape is rockin' and rollin'. Oh man, I'm a little torn about this posting. I'd heard in the past that Asthmatic Kitty had some religious ties (a close confidant of mine referred to them as "Jesus Freaks") but I've liked so much of their music recently, that I've been able to sort of shelve my animosity towards organized religion and just sort of experience that record label on a musical level. They sent over a press release about The Welcome Wagon a bit back, and I was instantly excited by the sort of twangy gospel feeling they invoked. I know, I know, I should just [...]
To get back to some non hip-hop, here's something new for fans of Sufjan Stevens. He helped out with the production on this one and you can definitely hear it in the sound. I'm a big fan of Sufjan's use of multiple back-up vocalists going "Whoa-OOOooOOoh!" Nice. This is the first I've heard of The Welcome Wagon, but I'm gonna keep my eye out for them. On the Asthmatic Kitty site, it says "The Welcome Wagon is a married couple, the Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique, who execute a genre of gospel music that is refreshingly plain...The [...]
It's hard to believe it's been almost three-and-a-half years since Sufjan Stevens released a record. Go back and listen to Illinois and more importantly, "Chicago" with fresh ears. It might be the song that ended the Garden State "indie revolution." You just can't write a better song than that. There's nowhere to go but down. For everyone. So what do you do? Nothing. You don't release a record

Do you lay awake at night wondering what Sufjan Stevens has been up to? He has been producing the latest Asmatic Kitty Records band "The Welcome Wagon". The Welcome Wagon is a married couple, the Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique, who execute a genre of gospel music that is refreshingly plain. Their hymns are modest and melodic takes on a vast history of sacred song traditions, delivered with the simple desire to know their Maker—and to know each other—more intimately. [...]
In a blind taste test, if you had told me "Sold! To the Nice Rich Man" was a track from an upcoming Sufjan Stevens album called, say, Minnesota Pop , I wouldn't have doubted you for a second. All the hallmarks are here: the punctuated song title, fussy-bordering-on-precious arrangements, gauzy horns, plunky banjo, Up With People background vocals, even the soft lead vocals. The song, a Danielson Famile cover originally from that band's 1998 album Tri-Danielson!!! , also conveys a similar sense of wonder at the world while conveying an undercurrent of sadness, in this case a disappointment [...]

* The Welcome Wagon-Sold! To the Nice Rich Man
Let us extend a warm welcome to the Welcome Wagon , who will welcome their debut album, Welcome to the Welcome Wagon , into the world December 9 thanks to Asthmatic Kitty . Like the good label ambassador he is, Sufjan Stevens helped welcome the Welcome Wagon by producing, arranging, and providing "extensive instrumentation" on the duo's new disc. Comprised of Presbyterian pastor the Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique, the Welcome Wagon craft what AK calls "a [...]

photo by Matthew Craig I know it's been quite a while, but I've taken a little break for my mental well-being. I'll be enjoying the remaining days of summer in Seattle at the Bumbershoot Festival. So expect amazing photos, interviews and coverage. I'll be kicking things into gear upon my return. Thanks for reading! 1. Quite possibly the least shocking news of the day. However, it's still a good read. Enjoy the NME piece here. MP3: Welcome Wagon - Sold To The Nice Rich Man
