photo by Bobby Aazami Just a quick post of a Daniel Johnson cover from Bahhaj Taherzadeh (We/Or/Me) that was just completed for a lost friend. Songs mean many things to many people and some are shared specifically among friends. I don't pretend to know the whole story behind the recording, but it is a great song, done well for a good reason. From the Soundcloud page: I recorded this song for my friend Gavin Welch a few days after he passed away. This week Marie helped [...]

We/Or/Me is Bahhaj Taherzadeh, a Chicago-based singer-songwriter whose voice conjures forth Nick Drake and Sam Bean (Iron and Wine). His music hearkens back to the traditions of British folk rock, and is both spellbinding and beautiful. And because of all these things, and more, I am very happy to report that Bahhaj has written with news that his first full-length - Sleeping City - is now out on Bandcamp . When I asked Bahhaj about the album, here's what he sent along: We/Or/Me is Bahhaj Taherzadeh, a [...]

Sometimes, it's important to refuel. I have some albums that I slip on every day, and they fit like my favorite pair of jeans. I will never, ever get tired of hearing R.E.M.'s Life's Rich Pageant , or Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. That's just how it is. I don't necessarily look for them every day, but they always find their way back to me. Of course, which albums stick around the house for a while is really up to the season. Sun Kil Moon works better in Fall and Winter, and The B-52's are a Summer [...]

Photo/illustration by David Greenwald Share All due apologies to Animal Collective, Mandy Moore really brought it in the singles department this year. My top 51 pretty young white people playing guitar and singing earnestly after the jump. (Note: Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA" not included.) Download All Songs : ZIP 1. Karen O and the Kids - "Worried Shoes" (Daniel Johnston cover): mp3 A beautifully written song finally gets the performance [...]

Here are my 50 favourite songs of 2008: the ones I really, really, really, really like. I decided not to include any artist twice, nor any songs from albums I heard last year. I made similar lists in 2005 , 2006 and 2007 . The best way to browse this list is to click the little arrow beside each song and then listen as you read. The things you like you can then download by right- or ctrl-clicking with your mouse. Please buy albums, singles and [...]

I have an EP that you should want to buy. No, scratch that, I have an EP that you will buy. I know this because if you are here, you are clearly a connoisseur of all things quality. You will have no other choice to fork over your hard earned (or not so hard earned) cash. The EP is Ghostwriter , the band is We/Or/Me . We/Or/Me is actually Bahhaj Taherzadeh who is in fact a new resident to Chicago by way of Ireland who breathes beauty and new life into the Singer Songwriter [...]

Another Sunday, this one sunny. Another sorry, this one for Sarah. Another songwriter, this one reminds me of Bright Eyes sans-vibrato and youth. Another song, this one for remembering things. Another listen, this won't be the last. Listen: We/Or/Me - Tell Sarah [from Ghostwriter | buy ]

Apologies for the lack of updates. My work schedule is crazier than Whitney Houston's crack cocaine problem used to be, and for this, I have an interesting graph. Today, I had the fantastic privilege of being waited on by someone with Turrets. While this doesn't seem like it would be an eye opening experience, it was . Not only did I learn that Turrets is nothing to joke about, I learned that in some ways, I've been needing to scream some things out myself. So [...]

It's my lunch break and I've been reading about Public Health Care reform and the working poor for three and a half hours. Did you know almost half of high-work, low income families have three or more children , as opposed to moderate-work, low income families who favor one? That's just crazy . You're telling me if I work less, statistically I'd favor having less children? JACKPOT ! Now, if I were a parent in that unfortunate multiple child senario, I'd be faced with two [...]

We/Or/Me - "Tell Sarah" . This weekend in Montreal was sweltering. At night it was the sort of heat that makes half-moons feel full. Musically, there are two ways to cope with weather like this. You can listen & dance to sparkly summertime jams , barbecue cooking... or you can do as We/Or/Me do, as they did when I first heard "Aimless Day" three years ago . "Aimless Day" has just been reissued on the Ghostwriter EP (listen here ), along with "Tell Sarah" and three other slices of dusk. We/Or/Me are a wondrous group [...]

Still from Sedmikrásky / Daisies by Chytilova, 1966 "It's not love," he added quickly. "But we are going to see each other again. But tell me, Daniel-I mean, I knew you before you knew Karla. Did you ever think then that love was never going to happen to you?" "Pretty much." "And when it did happen, how did you feel?" "Happy. And then I got afraid that it would vanish as quickly as it came. [...]
