The summer after my junior year of college was one of those dips in my life where I started feeling a reflexive boredom with music. At the time, I lucked into a cool job booking bands at the town's largest venue, The Dame. Unless we had booked a larger national artist that routed through on a Monday, we hosted an open mic night against our better judgment as a means to have some sort of music on a slower weeknight. Open mic nights are generally abhorred by anyone who works in an environment with live entertainment, since that's [...]

Viceland Today hipped me up to the '03 doc on the ever-complex Wesley Willis. Willis was a staple of Mancow In The Morning's show and famous for his outrageous(ly awesome) songs and artwork. Watch it. [via viceland ]

This week I noticed that things in the basement had gone unusually quiet, and a silent Fuzzy is a bad sign. So with trepidation I descended deep into the vaults only to find that it was cleaner than usual, though smelled of something metallic burning. So I began to dig a bit out of curiosity and found some of my old crates on the dark end of the Codigator tunnel... I know I got this from the best unknown producer AckiPablo so long ago that I don't remember anything about it except that before it I was deaf, [...]

I had the pleasure of hosting Wesley Willis(RIP 1963-2003) a few times on his tours. You might even heard or read me tell the story that every time he managed to break my toilet seats but despite that he was a totally sweet human being. He had his moments being a diagnosed schizophrenic and all and it was quite the chore for any band to bring him out. One of those bands was a Chicago band called Today's My Super Space Out Day. Sort of a short emo band name by today's standards but actually a really powerful rock trio. [...]
It's been two weeks since the Bon Jovi concert, and "Who Says You Can't Go Home?" is still stuck in my head. I don't even like that song, but I can't shake it. We had an honest-to-goodness fun time. I'm annoyed that I missed Dashboard Confessional due to the parking situation Downtown, but I got there [...]

Rock over London. Rock on, Chicago. It's a Rock You Mentary.

The late great Wesley Willis is the subject of the feature length DVD documentary " Wesley Willis' Joy Rides " which is slated for release December 8. Produced by Eyeosaur and MVD Visual and directed by Chris Bagley and Kim Shively the film features footage from the last four year's of the schizophrenic artist's life, culminating with his death due to cancer in 2003. Willis, known for headbutt greetings and eccentric lyrics, was also a prolific drawer of intricate color ink-pen works. [...]

grand buffet - "cool as hell" (download) Yes, these guys are "cool as hell." Not only are they some of the awesomest guys you'll ever meet, they also enlisted fellow Pittsburgh homie Girl Talk WAY before everyone jumped on that bandwagon. Grand Buffet usually take it upon themselves to handle their production duties, but for this track from their 2003 release Pittsburgh Hearts , the man himself, Gregg Gillis , produced this track for them, and what a banger it is. You really can't go [...]

Wesley Willis Wesley Willis was one of a kind. I discovered him in the mid-'90s through the college radio station where I worked. Rock 'N' Roll Will Never Die — one of dozens of albums in Willis' discography — was a big favorite at the station. Each song featured basically the same music, a keyboard demo song in various keys and speeds. (24 songs of this recalls the Greensleeves Rhythm Album dancehall reggae compilations, [...]

I hope you had a great holidays and New Year! I did. January is actually one of my favorite times of year. The weather still isn't great, but the days are starting getting longer, my body's circadian rhythms tell me to start going places, doing things, and seeing people again. Six hours of daylight makes me hibernate, and now it's time to go find some honey. Here's this week's honey: artist - song - album :: extra info Faded Paper Figures - North by North [...]
The Donnybrook Writing Academy will be the unofficial wine-and-cheese-nose-in-the-ai r-azure-ichor headquarters for the 31st Starz Denver Film Festival. Film critic and toilet correspondent Fritz Godard reports: Friday I'm not sure if it was the opening night film or that I may have eaten my weight in pork products at the party following the film, but Friday morning I woke up in a stomach corroding vomit-producing state, which required me to sleep for 90% of the next 24 hours. Needless to say, I missed more than a few films I wanted to see, in particular [...]

If you've never heard Wesley Willis before, I'm not entirely sure where to start. He was a diagnosed schizophrenic, and he may have suffered from some mental disorders. That being said, his music is rather simplistic and raw, filled with absurd lyrics -- all of which has to his status as a cult novelty act. While he may not have had serious musical talent, he did have the ability to create music that I doubt anyone else ever would. For me, as I assume with many others, Willis' music can provide some comic relief. So [...]
Today is the 5th anverisay of Wesley Willis death. Wesley Willis was a busker musician and artist from Chicago. A diagnosed schizophrenic, he gained a sizable cult following in the 1990s after releasing several hundred songs of unique but simple music, with emphasis on his humorous, bizarre stream-of-consciousness lyrics. On August 21, 2003, at the age of 40, Willis died due to complications from chronic myelogenous leukemia. At the time of his death, he had recorded over 1,000 songs but his total life savings were less than $300. Having sold out hundreds of venues across the country, the question [...]
