In case you haven't already read Ian Maleney's lengthy response to Una Mullally's now well-disseminated Irish Times piece questioning the health of the Dublin club scene, do check it out - here it is . As I live in Kells, I wouldn't have any more than an armchair view of what is going on in the clubs in Dublin at the moment. Yet, Tripod closure notwithstanding, going on the evidence of facebook event invites and reports from friends in the know, many of whom are a lot younger than me, things do seem to be in as [...]

Westbam - Monkey Say Monkey Do (DJ Mellow Mo Bass Remix)

I'm convinced that one digest article a day is going to be better than my writing 2 to 4 articles, so for now we'll see if I can keep it up. You guys tell me what you think.. This has been floating around for a while, and the Nightriders just decided to give it away on their soundcloud profile. Nice! Nightriders on Soundcloud Nightriders - This Love Is Real.mp3 Moguai continues to benefit [...]

a bit of friday tensnake action never goes astray. ever. ive been listening to his resident advisor mix all day and i have to say that my day has been pretty damned good. he did this jake island mix half way through last year and it would be a perfect cocktail accompaniment for tonight: a hazy slow burner with a sexy, oh-so sleazy bongo and bass line to match. Jake Island (feat Joanna Christie) - What If You Wanted More (Tensnake Remix) ( alt ) [...]

Westbam featured in an early Charity Shop Classic post back when but here in his own right. WestBam (Maximilian Lenz, the brother of Fabian Lenz (DJ Dick)), born on 4 March 1965 in Münster, Westphalia. Not only is he Germany's most successful and most popular DJ and avantgardist of the Raving Society, he is also the most innovative producer and co-founder of Berlin's Indie Dance label, Low Spirit Recordings. WestBam is in fact the abbreviated form of Westphalia BamBaataa and derives from his home state in Germany and his role model Afrika Bambaataa. [...]

Now we get to the "Play" era Moby. From Moby's own bio : 1997 – releases 'james bond theme' as part of 'tomorrow never dies'. it gets to #8 in the uk charts. also releases 'i like to score', a collection of music that has appeared in different films. 1998 – ends contract with elektra records. spends entire year working on 'play' and trying to find a record contract in north america. [...]

Dance music's Mr Controversy. Responsible for bringing dance music to the masses (especially in America) or corporate whore and sellout. Take your pick. Both are probably true. Leaving that to one side, eight years after Twin Peaks-sampling "Go" (1991) hit the charts and a litany of flawed and unsuccessful records, Moby released the gospel-dance joy that was the album "Play" (1999). This sold over 10 million copies and is a major milestone in dance music. Can't listen to it today, mind. The remixes of Play-era singles are another matter. But I get ahead of myself. Today, it's all pre-Play era [...]

Some of these I have been sitting on for far too long, so I have to share them with you. A nice variety here, so I will do a little blurb about each track. Don't forget you can also stream before you download. Enjoy the music! Radiohead - Creep (Copycat Club remix) :: Copycat on the remix of Radiohead's first big tune. A little slow, but it does a great job of working with the original vocal. Almost on the industrial edge, but has some acid sounds in it [...]

As previously threatened, Westbam. I seem to remember my first exposure to Westbam came with ...And Party, one part Walking On Sunshine, one part Spank and a vocoder. Nothing really special at the time, but odd enough that I remembered the artist. After this came Monkey Say, Monkey Do (presented here in the New Beat remix) as particularly impressive and the follow up Saxophone with it's infectious flip side, Alarm Clock . I believe Alarm Clock is built on top of a sample of Gang Of Four's What We All Want and is, erm, somewhat of an [...]
It would be easy to write Moby off as a dick. He has made some music that overstayed it's welcome by providing the soundtrack to near every commercial break as well as choices which seem intent on pissing people off , but on the flip side his early rave/club work is pretty good and that's the period I want to highlight. Some of the following is documented on the album, Early Underground , so if this is up your street, it might be worth tracking down. Barracuda - Barracuda [...]
