Iowa City's own Wet Hair were in rare form at Al's Bar. The duo performed as a trio with a lean sound that was made cavernous in the constraints of the bar. This was due, in large part to the array of effects provided by their touring bassist who created a wide swath of sound and gave the band a [...]
Wednesday: James Leg (of the Black Diamond Heavies) with Warren Byrom @ The Green Lantern (9:30pm, 21+) Deranged rock played in a town that's welcoming to it. Vancouver-based musician Teen Daze shares a chillwave cover of Japandroids' "Wet Hair", taken off the band's 2009 album Post Nothing . This cover keeps the energy of the original and adds layers of dreamy arrangements to create a real piece of synthpop perfection.

This is Night People Records . They aren't just awesome, they are so eye-wateringly awesome I am tempted to give up on the label business altogether and take up knitting. I'm a pretty phlegmatic kind of a person most of the time, and there are very few labels who generate any kind of real envy in me, but these guys definitely manage it. Johnny from Fence and Stuart from Chemikal Underground are such lovely guys I could never be that nice if I took classes, never mind the respect I have [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. We recently got a chance to chat with Wet Hair and Shawn Reed, creator of Night People Records . s.o.t.r- After disbanding Raccoo-oo-on in 2008, what made you two decide to form Wet Hair? Was there any hesitation about starting a new group together? Did you ever consider just recording another album under Racoo-oo-on or did you feel that the new sound deserved a new outlook/name? [...]

In Vogue Spirit is a soothing ambient journey through the musical minds of Ryan Garbes and Shawn Reed. For just a 2 piece project, Wet Hair certainly offers a very wide variety of sounds for the listener to experience. Formed in 2008, Wet Hair has released a number of records showing off their take on the electronic/new wave influenced sound the band has to offer. At some points though, the wide variety of sounds do become incredibly drab, and the songs start to drag on. The biggest flaw of In Vogue Spirit is it's inability to keep the listener interested [...]

Wet Hair — Fade Till Morning Hot on the heels of their killer Radiant Lines 7" for Not Not Fun , Iowa psych collective Wet Hair have returned with a new album for De Stijl . In Vogue Spirit is their first full-length since 2009's Glass Fountain (also on NNF) and peels away some of their eccentricities to reveal tight, earworm melodies and a fresh [...]

Following a run of potently psychedelic offerings from the likes of C. Spencer Yeh, Hype Williams and Charlie Nothing, De Stijl Records ventures yet further into the outsider pop realm with a new album from Wet Hair. It's a leaner, more focussed effort than their last LP proper, the Not Not Fun-issued Glass Fountain, but it's still pretty murky, under-the-skin and righteously weird material.
Wet Wet Hair's 2009 album Glass Fountain (Via Not Not Fun) was such a fun record. Now, two years after, they wear the psychedelic swimsuit and jump into their Krautrock/Synth oriented simplicity, that echoes between Moon Duo and Can. A new album is out via the dear people of De Stijl, In Vogue Spirit . [...]
Wet Hair "Echo Lady" from A Roche on Vimeo. There are more than a handful of reasons to enjoy the new single from Wet Hair: 1. The sound is reminiscent of Moon Duo. Crashing waves of Kraut-rock influenced bass and guitar. Repetitions upon repetitions upon repetitions of sound and noise and melody that bucks and starts in to [...]

With their recent split with Naked on the Vague acting as a dip into pop's waters; Wet Hair's follow up, In Vogue Spirit is practically a jump into the pool. The band's most accessible batch of tunes to date boils with Krautrock rhythms, buzzing synths and a new focus on vocals that has previously been absent in much of the band's back catalog. It's not all motion and melody here though, the band still retains their experimental spirit, giving the record plenty of teeth to sink into any of those rising hooks. Along with contemporaries Lumerians and Moon [...]
Wet Hair 's new record In Vogue Spirit is out on May 7 via De Stijl and they're pushing on with the killer golden pop laid out on the NOTV split from a while back. This glared-out video teaser really gets the slight afternoon acid-trip take on both classic antipodean proto-pop as well as the more cosmic kraut vibrations that run through this total roller. buy

Sic Alps Three I-don't-mean-for-this-to-alway s-be-a-weather-report-but-67-d egrees-means-I-should-at-least -say-something reasons to dig out those old t-shirts and head over to the Empty Bottle tonight: 1. California's Sic Alps do that whole crazy garage-y plus psychedelic thing that is spreading like wildfire in the indie rock scene and they do it rather well. The thing that sets them apart is their sheer audacity. Like, who is putting out 22-song double albums worth of this stuff? Sic Alps, that's who. Their most recent Drag City release, "Napa Asylum" is [...]

Step 1. Take off jacket Chillwave? Dubstep? Gah, electronic music has so many superfluous adjectives. I thought one of my favorite producers was dubstep- turns out it was italo-disco. Grrrrrwhateverthatmeans. A synth is a synth. I don't care if a snare drum lands on 3 or 4. I move nonetheless. Step 2. Hang car keys on hook I first read about Teen Daze in a small blurb in XLR8R magazine. I've made a tradition about buying an issue, driving to somewhere I've never been, and plopping down to [...]
I really like Wet Hair. I would actually say that I was describing the ideal kind of...

Shawn Reed's Night People imprint has long been a the go-to resort for consistently amazing weirdo psych balladry, ambiguous and noise-inflicted pop and dark, inverted Americana. Reed's also pretty zoned in on both older Australian proto-punk and recent no-fi pop like Naked On The Vague (who his Wet Hair project just did an almost ridiculously good split with) or The Twerps and Knitted Abyss who've seen release on NP. This is a list in no particular order of his favourite bands and records from this year. Les [...]
