RayRay and I were on a scouting mission having been invited to a CD release party at Lambert's. We missed most of The Zoltars , but were on hand for Young Girls and Whalers . It was the Whalers' CD release party, but we left more impressed with how Young Girls live set is coming together. Since I took some pics, I might as well share them so head past the break for a quick gallery... Messy can be fun and Young [...]

Next to share their favourites of the year is part man part canine Barry-Sean... What a fantastic year for music this has been for me. I don't just mean for music that has been produced this year but more about the music that I've discovered from previous years (or, more accurately in most cases, music that has been discovered for me). And, because I've spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards to London on the train, I've had loads of listening time. Hurrah! So here we go. Here's my top ten songs of 2011. [...]
This week's Best New Releases includes a bounty of new singles from bands we never heard of before, but are so glad we have. First, we start off with the most obvious lead singles from new albums by Crystal Stilts and Los Campesinos. Although Crystal Stilts released their CD and MP3 version of their new [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

We loved The Whalers first EP How The Ship Goes Down so it was good news to discover they released a new EP, Paddle Easy , yesterday. Paddle Easy is another varied, five-song release that demonstrates the bands growing aptitude for creating diverse music within the rock and roll genre, from the surf-inspired Cheat on Each Other , to the elegance of I'm a Pixel in Your Picture , to the hypnotic (and our favourite) Lighthouse (featuring Arum Rae Valkonen of another MM favourite, White Dress [...]

I'll apologize now for neglecting the Daytrotter website that has been so solid for what seems like an eternity at this point. With that out of the way, I was pleasantly surprised to see our local ATH A2W band Whalers as the featured band of the day. The guys grab a lengthly 5 song live in-studio set highlighting their short career in the music business. Below you can find a live version of the song "Magic Tricks" which was the first tune that started turning heads around here. Head on over [...]

Local boys Whalers grabbed our attention earlier this year and landed a much coveted Artist 2 Watch tag . Since that time, the band has been hard at work recorded some tunes to follow up their late 2010 release How the Ship Goes Down . The new song I have for you below "Cheat on Each Other" is taken from those new recordings and appears on new EP, Paddle Easy which hits streets on September 6th. Apparently more great things are on the horizon [...]
Much of the nation, most especially the mid-west and the south, have been trapped under a dome of extreme heat for the past month or so, while the Northeast has been dipping in and out of excessive temperatures for weeks. Here in the west, we've had a mild summer with below average temperatures for most [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

![The Lighthouse and The Whaler [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3567790_lg.jpg)
The Lighthouse and The Whaler might be the best thing to come out of Cleveland since Major League. SafariMan, our resident Cleveland expert, had a great comment right after we first received the album: "These guys just went Blind Pilot on me." In their initial email to us, they said they were often compared to Fleet Foxes. I think I forwarded it to Oz and joked that I am often compared to Brad Pitt. I'll admit that while I liked the album at first, I didn't really hear the comparison on the first few spins. And then I [...]

Here we are again. A mix of the best tracks we posted in February and a few new ones too. Twenty seven cracking songs to immerse yourself in! Download O'Death – Bugs mp3 (from Outside) Echoes of their ramshackle and punkish best, but this time it is cocooned in something more subtle and thoughtful too. Download The Whalers – That Rabbit mp3 (from How The Ship Goes Down) Playing a wonderfully straightforward blend of thudding, bass-heavy rock that makes us think of QotSA melded with [...]

We picked up That Rabbit by The Whalers from the always excellent Rollo & Grady blog and it was one of those first play moments where you get to the end and say to yourself "how good was that?", before hitting repeat. So we figured we ought to share the track here for anyone who has missed out on the band so far plus another cracker from their EP How The Ship Goes Down . They are from Austin, Texas and play a wonderfully straightforward blend of thudding, bass-heavy rock that [...]

Whalers Hometown: Austin, Texas Album: How The Ship Goes Down (Buy) Label: Unsigned Whalers - That Rabbit Tweet
Austin band The Whalers have been at the music game in and around town playing live shows and making a name for themselves for about two years at this point. It's a shame that we haven't discovered them sooner, but we all know this town has more bands than we know what to do with. These guys recently finished their debut EP How the Ship Goes Down that features their very own brand of good 'ol fashioned rock n freaking roll. If I were to make a bill of similar local bands, I'd build a show [...]

It's a nearly impossible task: to sort, listen to (rinse. repeat), pass or fail tracks, write up reviews, and publish all of the music that is piled up in our email boxes, via the submission forms, and CDs and vinyls. The end of the year is fast approaching, but we've still got 2010 music that [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
