Although it was possibly the oddest line-up Dundee had ever seen; Sundays gig at Dexters has to have been the densest crowd I have ever been a part of, and perhaps one of the best. Once the first act had finished, who were so memorable I have already forgotten how many members were in it, let alone their name, the real music began. The next two acts Math the Band and MC Frontalot define themselves as 'electro-punk spazz' and 'nerdcore hip-hop' respectively, and the confusing titles have nothing on the nature of the acts. [...]
A few days ago when I was pondering Cheerios, I considered that the cereal would be ideal for serving at state functions while entertaining foreign dignitaries. Alas, as I cannot gut a moose, I fear that I have no possible route to high office where I could enact this bold idea. But I think I'd make a fine head of state and I suppose that I could overthrow a current leader and install a puppet regime. Like moose-gutting, leading a coup d'état is not in my skill set. Yet I have an innovative [...]
Stop it. Stop it. Just fucking stop it. Don't panic, this is emphatically NOT about pedophilia. Before you get your knickers in a twist have a quick look at the tracklisting, and in particular the band names, and hopefully you will see why the podcast has the name it does. So what am I really on about? Well, I happened across a band recently called Young Girls, and it finally became clear that after Bear Crystal Wolf Fuck Ghost bands, the new fashion is quite clearly paedo bands. Band whose names, whilst not exactly dodgy in themselves, lead [...]
"I'm just a teenage dirrrtbag baaaaby!" Remember 90s pop-rock group Wheatus and their infectiously catchy and highly overplayed song "Teenage Dirtbag"? Well, they're back and the 10th anniversary of its release. Wheatus is currently on tour in support of their latest album Pop, Songs & Death: Vol. 2 The Jupiter EP , which according to their official site , took longer than expected as the band faced various unexpected events this year. Say what you will, I always enjoyed the fun pop rock of groups like this (New Radicals, anyone?). You couldn't [...]
Two months later and I'm finally getting around to finishing this post. No excuses except enjoying the summer (post on that later, and by later I mean sooner rather than later) and spending less time in front of computers outside of work, hopefully some of you missed me. There are still a few more Pride celebrations in this neck of the woods over the next few weekends including Jersey City and the Bronx (my birthplace for those that are keeping tabs) so I figured it's still okay to continue posting in this direction before moving on to anything else. Last Scene Falling are the latest band to be thriving with publicity having published their music on slicethepie.com. Their pop/punk sound is growing ever more popular with fans buzzing for the six man rock show. If catchy choruses and melodic leads backed up with a some hard-hitting infectious riffs and clashing symbols is your thing then Last Scene Falling are a must have. The band are relatively new having formed just a couple of years ago so their achievement and success over this short period of time is testament to their fantastic talent. They've already supported the [...]

Sonisphere Festival 2011: Weezer @ Apollo Stage – Saturday, 09 July 2011
The two cover songs that Weezer slipped into their Sonisphere set charactise the playful/serious dichotomy that's made Weezer the long-lasting force in rock that they are today - 'Paranoid Android' for serious indie bedwetting, and 'Teenage Dirtbag' for brainless, teenage singalongs. We love it all. Weezer @ Sonisphere Festival 2011 c/o Ben Gibson Weezer @ Sonisphere [...]
Dusting 'Em Off: Wheatus – Wheatus
In 2000, Wheatus debuted its snarky, self-titled album that spoke to the hearts of adolescent losers everywhere. A decade later, the album's peppy-pop and smart and snotty lyrics remain relevant to a new litter of teenage dirtbags. Ominous drums usher listeners in on the album's first track, "Truffles". Band catalyst Brendan B. Brown delivers seething one-liners in his signature squawk of bitterness. The song addresses a pseudo "bad ass," debunking his facade with an age-old "yo' mamma" dis: "'Cause I saw her outside suckin' dick in the bathroom/In the bus of the Iron Maiden cover band." [...]

Introducing Pet Lions
A few weeks ago Papa Cougar and I shared an earphone each, and a tube journey home, as he played me Chicago's Pet Lions. They were, he informed me, well overdue a review at Cougar HQ. Without hesitation I jumped at the opportunity to spout my opinionated take on debut EP 'Soft Right'. Let's start [...]

Whatever happened to: Wheatus?
Usually in this column I go back and pick out and artist from the late 80's or early 90's that made a splash and has since dropped completely off my radar. This week I'm not going back as far, to ask the question about a band from the early 2000s. Today our target is Wheatus. They had a big hit with the song "Teenage Dirtbag", which despite its truly annoying vocals, was undeniably catchy. Admit it. You sang along every time they hit that chorus. [...]
