"Swoon" starts with a maelstrom of digital dissonance. What at first sounds like a careless upload of a terrible quality mp3 you realize is made up of finely crafted overdrive, chorus and tons of reverb. It takes awhile for the vocals to come in but that makes their entrance all the more pleasing. Whirr, formerly known as Whirl, have been touring extensively since last year's full length, Pipe Dreams. This cut, considerably darker than anything they've previously done, is from their upcoming EP, Around , out on Graveface July 9th.

I wasn't originally planning on doing a show this evening, but decided to take my normal spot behind the microphone anyway. So the playlist didn't begin coming together until the evening of. There was no theme, it was all variety; folk to electronic to noise rock. If you missed it, here's the list: "The Crystal Cat" by Dan Deacon by Spiderman Of The Rings "A Dark God Heart" by Sleep Party People off We Were Drifting On A Sad Song [...]

If dreamo isn't a genre yet, this tight and hard-rocking but detatchedly cathartic debut might as well be it's beginning.

Although the cover art of Whirl ’s second release - which shows Nicole Kidman naked from the back - is pretty much guaranteed to catch anyone’s attention, it’s the actresses’ words, cut and pasted into the opening track that say the most about what we should be focusing on. Taken from the sexually charged (and a bit weird) film Eyes Wide Shut , Kidman’s murmured words come disjointedly out of the moody, thick and swirling mists of ‘Preface’; “ I think we should be grateful, grateful that we managed to survive through all our adventures… whether they were [...]

If one were to collect mathematical data regarding the philosophy behind Whirl ’s debut, conclusions might reveal a propensity to bury sweet melodies among layers of sonic fuzz and a tendency to stick with their formula for the entire 24 minute, 7 song EP. The intense wall of guitars, rendering the vocals barely audible from the surrounding rubble, is a direct tribute to shoegazers all over the world, both past and present. On the one hand, it is refreshing to see a newcomer practice the art of musical singularity [...]

Whirl's debut EP (they did informally release a demo) is Shoegaze at its most pure. The serene noise of a thousand guitars, the drowning vocals that leave a trace of swooning melody and an atmosphere that you can quite easily get lost in. This seven track release has some outstanding moments - most notably those that remain content to meander rather than rock. 'Leave' is one such track, allowing a guitar rift to sail above the sea of distortion and create the hook, the vocals taking over with a melancholic tone. 'Blue' is a more epic [...]

As far as shoegaze is concerned, you can make all the noise you want, but if there isn’t a melody in there to make things owrthwhile, you’re as good as lost. California’s Whirl know this better than anybody, and as a consequence, melody comes first for them. All the typical things are all present and correct on ‘Leave’: pounding drums, indecipherable vocals and scathing walls of distorted guitar that are inescapable. It is intense and relentless, but once again the melody comes first, and this one is a beauty, with the ability to linger in the listener’s head [...]

Here's another cut from Whirl 's Distressor EP, which originally debuted about a year ago. "Candy" is easily the most aggressive track in the collection and packs a punch much like the epic, and previously posted, " Leave ". Catherine Wheel and Alison's Halo comparisons are welcome. Pick up a second edition cassette of Distressor over at Bridgetown Records . [...]

Listen to this track and try not to imagine it's 1991. Your hair's a little longer (or maybe not). The recession sucks (still does). And sandwiched between "Souvlaki Space Station" and "Only Shallow" on your latest mixtape is "Leave" by San Francisco band Whirl. Whirl - Leave via SKOA Whirl: ( Bandcamp ) Rating: 8.5
Californian natives Whirl have grabbed their guitars, turned their amps to 11 and laid heavily on their distortion pedals for this beatifully grungy shoegazer of a tune. "Leave" is a track from their upcoming release Distressor , which drops April 25th courtesy of the London based label The Sounds of Sweet Nothing. The 7 track album will be available for download on 12". You can grab "Leave" below: Whirl - Leave by TheSoundsOfSweetNothing

San Francisco’s Whirl shoegazing sound sits somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but with a much more elite feel that has long evolved from their peers. Their debut EP ‘Distressor’ comes drenched in loud feedback, and the band’s melodic elements sometimes get lost, but isn’t that the point? Standout track ‘Leave’ has the grungey elements of The Joy Formidable but if they’d listened to Slowdive records, as does the equally exhilarating ‘Ghost’. The constant dreamy impressions will leave a mark on you, but ‘Meaningless’ shows they can also rock out when the need arises, in remarkably lo-fi [...]
