Matt Hutchison, the frontman and songwriter of Whiskey Go Gos is originally from country Victoria but spent his early years living in 16 different countries with his missionary mother. His lyrics reflect a life on the road, from St Kilda to Stockholm, Oslo to Oahu, Moscow to Mexico City. "I've been squatting, living out of suitcases and saying goodbye most of my life," says Matt. "Those experiences made me reach for the spiritual, to try and go beyond." After coming off the road in October '08 the Whiskey Go Gos have been busy in the studio [...]

I've been getting more and more submissions from bands, labels and publicists lately, and I thought that rather than continuing to write a big post on the rare things I immediately fall in love with and nothing on the rest, I'd start featuring more of the stuff that I like at first listen and don't necessarily get back to right away.* * *So I'll start off with a SXSW notice from Minty Fresh

Blues wasn't born accessible. But Melbourne's Whiskey Go Gos seem determined to transform the raw-boned Southern stomp of the genre into unabashed, sing-along pop music. On their debut LP 'Proud Tales To Them of Us' , out on Warner in Australia, lead singer Matt Hutchinson belts out the sort of stuff you can waste away with at the bottom of a bottle, or pump your fists to in a fit of glee. The beauty? It's your choice. Indeed, the duo's tunes are hauntingly heartfelt, pub-uniting howlers - an endless stream of [...]
Maybe you've heard their song "Two Cent Girl" on a recent Nokia commercial, or heard about some upcoming tour dates in New York and LA, but I have to post about how cool I think Whiskey Go Gos is. This band is a reminder of Kings of Leon for me but their songs are less serious and more laid back. Their debut, Proud Tales To Tell Them Of Us is out in Australia, where they are from. This is one band that I feel can make a name for themselves.

This is doing my heart good. Listening to Whiskey Go Go's debut album "Proud Tales To Them Of Us" is putting a smile on my face. It is good time music with heart and soul and passion. They are probably sick of the comparison but the similarities to Kings Of Leon are striking. But I think that is a good thing. Some of these songs growl and rumble, some delight and many flat out rock. "It's life," Matt says. "I sing about what I know and feel. People wear so many masks today. But I don't want anything [...]

And now for another hot tip. The more I listen to Whiskey Go Gos , the more I come to love them. Their sound is primarily southern rock and fans of Kings of Leon will find it instantly recognisable. But to this they add elements of blues and a small country twang, both of which help to really define their sound. The band is built around lead singer Matt Hutchinson and it is through him that they really shine. All the songs I've heard so far are of the highest quality, clever compositions that are rich in variety and [...]
