With the weekend's Super Bowl now over, what better way to celebrate the season than with a playlist from a show not only about football, but with one of the greatest indie soundtracks to go with it. NBC's Friday Night Lights is a show about a small, western Texas town, where every Friday night during the football season the town shuts down to cheer on the Dylan Panthers football team. With the bright lights of the football stadium, it's easy for the various characters to get lost in themselves as they deal with handling pressure, serious injury, drug [...]

Normally, our Encore features consist solely of hypotheticals. "It would be awesome if X would play Y." "I hope one day X plays 'Nausea' again." They create forums for us, fans of the artists, to break out what we would like to hear given the choice. Maybe a song that hasn't been played live in years. Sometimes a song that hasn't been played live ever . They are let loose into the pop-culture ether, with hopes that the wished-upon songs will reach the artists' subconscious and shimmy their way into an upcoming setlist. However, when [...]
For the record, there are only three full-length releases by Whiskeytown , and Rural Free Delivery is not one of them. It isn't a greatest hits compilation, nor is it a collection of B-sides and rarities. Recorded in early 1995, within the first few months of Whiskeytown forming, RFD is eight songs (nine with the bonus track), mostly rough cuts and demos, ranging from subtle folk-y ballads to outright rocking alt-country blazers, and shows an early Whiskeytown, influenced by the likes of Gram Parsons, the Replacements and Uncle Tupelo, as well as Ryan Adams punkier [...]

I've been on a Big Star kick all week, thanks to the trailer for Nothing Can Hurt Me , a new documentary about the band's "massive critical acclaim, dismal commercial failure," and enduring legacy as "pop music's greatest cult phenomenon." The movie's tagline sums it up: I never heard Big Star on the radio, or even at a record shop. I listened to Big Star because other band's told me to via cover songs and tributes. My introduction to Alex Chilton first came through Elliott Smith's hushed cover of "Thirteen" (there are countless takes on [...]

I need to preface this article by saying this is less of a live show review and more of a commentary with my relationship to the music of Ryan Adams. Despite everything that has been said about the history of Adams, his musical output, and so-called artistic wrong turns; Ryan Adams is the reason I love music the way I do. He is the reason I am writing for this blog, the reason I spend every amount of expendable income on records and shows, and the reason for the deep connection I have towards music as a whole. Now go [...]

For an artist that has been as prolific as Ryan Adams , it's hard to believe that he hasn't put out a proper studio album of new material since 20082s Cardinology . We're talking about a guy who ambitiously released three records in the same year, including Cold Roses - the sprawling double-disc of Grateful Dead inspired psychedelic country-rock. After disbanding The Cardinals in 2009, Adams has stepped out of the spotlight performing only sporadic gigs, got hitched to Mandy Moore, became a Facebook enthusiast and dabbled in heavy metal with [...]
[mp3] Whiskeytown: "Excuse Me If I Break My Own Heart" Sorry for all the video posts of late... yet, videos such as the one above, are more often than not the number one way artists choose to share new music these days. Case in point, Ryan Adams . We could write a novel about this artist; his artistic indulgences, love for country music, Heartbreaker , Cold Roses , JP Bowersock, Whiskeytown, Gold , drugs, secret shows, and much more. All that being left unsaid - what we [...]

"The Best of I Am Lovedrug " is a collection of covers funded buy fans of the band. It's also the band's first full-length album. It's quite unusual for a band to introduce itself to the world via the words and music of others, but it's also a canny way to get internet buzz. The selection (and arrangement) of songs ranges from the common to the quirky, as you'd expect. There's a the obligatory Fleetwood Mac song, "Dreams," which, frankly, nobody seems to be able to do a bad version of. Oddly, there's also a Stevie Nicks [...]
This is a record that is sweeping and involving until the end.
Thank god the heat is starting to subside around here, if i have to listen to another person complain about the temperature i think i'm going to snap... it's not that bad... relax. Sorry thought that it needed to be said. Anyways here's a few songs: . Phineas and the Lonely Leaves- The Feeling . [...]

Whiskeytown Album: Those Weren't The Days (info) Whiskeytown - Kiss & Make Up [Via - Aquarium Drunkard] Tweet
A rather lengthy title for a fairly short-lived band but they certainly did write some good music.

howdy, gang! back to the vacation reposting bonanza! well not a bonanza just a few shows that ive had requests for over the past month. of all the whiskeytown shows i have heard this is most definitely my favorite, which is due in large part to this particularly wrenching version "the battle." btw, its from 10.30.97 @ the 7th street entry in minneapolis. 1. today 2. 16 days 3. yesterdays news 4. excuse me while i break my own heart 5. Stream: Ryan Adams - "16 Days" (Live) + Metal Version Many Ryan Adams detractors have trouble grasping the context of his half-joking forays into metal and other genres contrasting the alt-country label for which he's most famously known, but perhaps this recent live riff on Whiskeytown's "16 Days" as a black metal acoustic jam alongside the more traditional take that follows will provide some enlightening context to Adams' playful genre experiments. My take on it is that he's deconstructing the craftsmanship behind his songwriting through humor while seizing the moment [...]
While visiting family last week in North Carolina I ran across an old CD-R I'd left here 8 or so years ago; a Whiskeytown bootleg of late 90s studio demos entitled Those Weren't The Days. At 19 tracks much of the set is comprised of material that later found a home on Adams' solo work [...]

Now for the third and finally aspect of a great night cruise mix. This is the part i love the most. These are the songs i basically have planned out a year in advance. The songs for the quite ride home. When you've decided it's time to head back in and call it a night. Any conversations at this point will have meaning and depth...real. Never underestimate the importance of songs that you internalize immediately (see big red marbles' "make that call" from my This playlist is better than most relationships i\'ve been in post i put up back [...]

I've been really slacking on posting lately, I've just been busy here cleaning, organizing, and other things. Getting to the end of the projects I set out, so hopefully soon things should pick back up. Coming this week will be mostly live shows I've recorded the past couple months, including Ron Sexsmith and Astronautalis. I will also be posting reviews of the new Brett Dennen and Atmosphere albums shortly. Hope everyone's Easter was well and you enjoyed your time with family, friends or whatever you decided to do to celebrate. The Mercy Wheel- A.A. [...]
