The Clash were easily the most commercially successful band to come out of the 19702s punk scene, with their potent brand of punk rock that mixed elements of ska, reggae, funk and rockabilly, all set to Joe Strummer's socio-political lyrics. On September 9, the iconic and influential punk act will release Sound System , a massive nine-disc box set that comes packaged in a vintage boom box designed by Clash bassist Paul Simonon. The set, which will feature remastered versions of the band's [...]

Today we look at Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons, one of the heavy influences on "No Depression" music, or what he called "Cosmic American."

Ah, February. The short month full of Hallmark cards, increased chocolate intake, and enough flowers and candy to make every single person gag. Yep, we definitely get doused in consumerism as February 14th approaches, but that doesn't mean that cupid's favorite month needs to be nothing but sap. We've all been to enough weddings to know that there are songs that make you warm and fuzzy, and songs that give you the cold sweats. And I'm here to offer up my takes on some of the best tracks that leave you jonesing for a make-out session. And believe [...]

I'm not going to beat around the bush: Ryan Adam's Heartbreaker is one of my favorite albums of all time. In fact, I'd even go as far as to argue that it's one of the best albums released since 2000. Prior to the release of Heartbreaker , Adams had already established his credentials as a top-notch songwriter during his time fronting the much-hyped and critically well-regarded band Whiskeytown. Unfortunately, the band's lineup was constantly in flux, eventually leading Adams to call it quits for the band. In the wake of Whiskeytown's demise, Adams traveled to Nashville to record his [...]

Alt-country rockers American Aquarium first came to my attention thanks to their cover of Whiskeytown's 'Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight' (watch it below), but their own material is pretty damn excellent. They have just announced the release date of their upcoming fourth studio album, Burn.Flicker.Die , which is due on August 25th, and was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with Jason Isbell producing, and Spooner Oldham & Amanda Shires appearing as guests. A fine pedigree. Have a listen to two new songs, 'Cape Fear River' and 'Redheads and Adderall' from the album, and also check [...]
I think you know the drill by now. Monday = another playlist. The keenest eyed and sharpest memory'd listener will notice that this is the first Melancholy Monday featuring an artist who already showed up in an earlier playlist (strictly speaking, so, for example, I'm not counting "Wilco" and "Billy Bragg & Wilco" as the same artist), so the first person to figure out who that artist is will be roundly mocked for not having a life. Enjoy. 1. Yaz: Winter Kills ("Upstairs At Eric's," 1982) 2. Sufjan Stevens: The Seer's [...]

happy irish day, people! i have been listening to this for a number of years now, and its been reposted twice well now three times. i mainly go back to it for this version of "the battle" which breaks my heart just about everytime. of all the whiskeytown shows i have heard this is most definitely my favorite. btw, its from 10.30.97 @ the 7th street entry in minneapolis. 1. today 2. 16 days 3. yesterdays news 4. excuse me while i break my own [...]

Ryan Adams at the Catalyst, from the HAD Archive On this rainy Friday, we've decided to serenade you with the sixth track from Whiskeytown's (in our opinion) underrated final record, Pneumonia . The record found Adams at the height of his songwriting powers, and moreover, the production is masterful. The result is a record that achieves much of what Adams has spent the bulk of his career pursuing: pop perfection wrapped in a veneer of troubadour street cred. This track, "Sit And Listen To The [...]

With the weekend's Super Bowl now over, what better way to celebrate the season than with a playlist from a show not only about football, but with one of the greatest indie soundtracks to go with it. NBC's Friday Night Lights is a show about a small, western Texas town, where every Friday night during the football season the town shuts down to cheer on the Dylan Panthers football team. With the bright lights of the football stadium, it's easy for the various characters to get lost in themselves as they deal with handling pressure, serious injury, drug [...]

Normally, our Encore features consist solely of hypotheticals. “It would be awesome if X would play Y.” “I hope one day X plays ‘Nausea’ again.” They create forums for us, fans of the artists, to break out what we would like to hear given the choice. Maybe a song that hasn’t been played live in years. Sometimes a song that hasn’t been played live ever . They are let loose into the pop-culture ether, with hopes that the wished-upon songs will reach the artists’ subconscious and shimmy their way into an upcoming setlist. However, when [...]
For the record, there are only three full-length releases by Whiskeytown , and Rural Free Delivery is not one of them. It isn’t a greatest hits compilation, nor is it a collection of B-sides and rarities. Recorded in early 1995, within the first few months of Whiskeytown forming, RFD is eight songs (nine with the bonus track), mostly rough cuts and demos, ranging from subtle folk-y ballads to outright rocking alt-country blazers, and shows an early Whiskeytown, influenced by the likes of Gram Parsons, the Replacements and Uncle Tupelo, as well as Ryan Adams punkier [...]

I've been on a Big Star kick all week, thanks to the trailer for Nothing Can Hurt Me , a new documentary about the band's "massive critical acclaim, dismal commercial failure," and enduring legacy as "pop music's greatest cult phenomenon." The movie's tagline sums it up: I never heard Big Star on the radio, or even at a record shop. I listened to Big Star because other band's told me to via cover songs and tributes. My introduction to Alex Chilton first came through Elliott Smith's hushed cover of "Thirteen" (there are countless takes on [...]

I need to preface this article by saying this is less of a live show review and more of a commentary with my relationship to the music of Ryan Adams. Despite everything that has been said about the history of Adams, his musical output, and so-called artistic wrong turns; Ryan Adams is the reason I love music the way I do. He is the reason I am writing for this blog, the reason I spend every amount of expendable income on records and shows, and the reason for the deep connection I have towards music as a whole. Now go [...]

For an artist that has been as prolific as Ryan Adams , it's hard to believe that he hasn't put out a proper studio album of new material since 20082s Cardinology . We're talking about a guy who ambitiously released three records in the same year, including Cold Roses - the sprawling double-disc of Grateful Dead inspired psychedelic country-rock. After disbanding The Cardinals in 2009, Adams has stepped out of the spotlight performing only sporadic gigs, got hitched to Mandy Moore, became a Facebook enthusiast and dabbled in heavy metal with [...]
[mp3] Whiskeytown: "Excuse Me If I Break My Own Heart" Sorry for all the video posts of late... yet, videos such as the one above, are more often than not the number one way artists choose to share new music these days. Case in point, Ryan Adams . We could write a novel about this artist; his artistic indulgences, love for country music, Heartbreaker , Cold Roses , JP Bowersock, Whiskeytown, Gold , drugs, secret shows, and much more. All that being left unsaid - what we [...]

“The Best of I Am Lovedrug ” is a collection of covers funded buy fans of the band. It’s also the band’s first full-length album. It’s quite unusual for a band to introduce itself to the world via the words and music of others, but it’s also a canny way to get internet buzz. The selection (and arrangement) of songs ranges from the common to the quirky, as you’d expect. There’s a the obligatory Fleetwood Mac song, “Dreams,” which, frankly, nobody seems to be able to do a bad version of. Oddly, there’s also a Stevie Nicks [...]
This is a record that is sweeping and involving until the end.
