L.A. band Whispering Pines is a Laurel Canyon inspired five-piece whose eponymous record is a great collection of Americana and roots rock. The guys – David Baine (guitar, organ, mandolin, piano, vocals), Joe Bourdet (guitar, slide, organ, vocals), David Burden (harmonica, vocals), Brian Filosa (bass, vocals), and Joe Zabielski (drums, percussion) – named their group after the song by The Band, and while they indulge in the laid-back sounds of 70’s FM radio rock, they also tie in country, folk and blues filled with strong guitar and sweet harmonies. This self-titled release expands upon their acclaimed 2010 [...]

I had Friday off and ended up spending most of the day sanding down cabinets. They came out looking great; a natural light pine distressed with a hint of dark stain peeping through. Ultimately they will get two light coats of matte brown followed by white paint and distressed lightly. Yes. We are re-doing the kitchen. And I still had time to take a nice 25 mile bike ride through the countryside (hence this post's photo, taken just outside Rexville, WA). After the cabinet distressing will [...]

[Thanks to everyone who helped/offered help with this blogger's tech problems yesterday. Back to our regularly unscheduled programming:] Top things to consider after checking out Ima Robot this morning (11:15) on Morning Becomes Eclectic: ► Color me interested in hearing new music from Moses Campbell , who are playing the Smell tonight along with Peter and the Wolf and Black Jesus . ► Whispering Pines and Wheelhouse play the Satellite. ► Wait.Think.Fast , joined by [...]

Sweaters Monday night was the opening of the Sweaters Spaceland residency, presented by L.A. RECORD and SESAC, celebrating their latest release, the second edition of their manifesto, Can’t Stop Winning, on Echo Park Books, packaged lovingly with their new White Iris 7”, featuring “Like Ur Killing A Man” b/w “Can’t Stop Winning.” No Monday night residency I’ve ever seen at Spaceland was as packed as the Sweaters show, especially not as early as 10PM. I’ve seen Sweaters play a dozen times in the last year but they’ve always been playing short sets [...]

Retro isn't a bad thing, if you take your name from a tune by The Band you're setting your stall out loud and clear as to where your influences and inspiration are coming from , Whispering Pines are a quintet based out of LA and their album released back in February surfaced in my Reviewshine in-box at an opportune time, sliding itself in beside the bluesy albums that have permeated by recent listening, the nine track collection includes eight original compositions and a over of JJ Cale's Crazy Mama [...]

Every Wednesday, I feature at least one album that has been submitted to me through the ReviewShine website. I have cleverly titled this recurring segment "ReviewShine Wednesday." Today's artist is relatively new on the scene, but you'd never know it by listening to their record. Whispering Pines is a five-piece country-rock outfit from Los Angeles that sounds as though it was lifted straight out of the Laurel Canyon music scene that overtook the City of Angels in the late 1960's... with a little Allman-style southern soul [...]
You'd be wise to catch one of Whispering Pines’ live gigs around L.A. or pick up Family Tree at the local record shop. There aren't too many self-released debut albums of this quality coming out these days.

Hold on to your hats or your bootstraps or something. We'll be having an interruption of regular blogging service and particularly SXSW coverage to bring you two days of Band/Dead/Stones inspired hippie rock. First up is Whispering Pines . And it's not like you haven't heard it before. But you can always expand the genre. And in this case this LA based band adds boozy blues harmonica, Muscle Shoals soul, and West coast stoner rock to their take on Band-era rock `n' roll. At times the band's new record Family Tree [...]
