Jesus ear-fucking Christ this fucking hurts to listen to. The Willow Garden is a song I first came across as a b-side to Where the Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I didn't know it was a traditional song at that point, but I didn't care where it came from. I didn't even know who Warren Ellis was, but the fiddle playing on the song was some of the best I had (and still have) ever heard. It's amazing - managing to sound mournful, morbid and creepy all together. Like [...]

White Antelope , the pseudonym for music recorded by Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, has appeared on this blog before. Here are two more tracks of his. - Joel White Antelope - "Silver Dagger" White Antelope - "Wild Mountain Thyme"

photo by steven robbins In case some of you don't know, my brother has recently joined the Coast Guard and gotten stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. While your immediate reaction may be, "Holy Cow! That is awesome!"; since Steve has been stationed in Hawaii, he has bought a broken moped, had surgery on his big toe, and he is away from family. To be fair, he's exploring a place that everyone that isn't there, wishes they were. So to keep him company and in hopes it will make him feel better, I've made a little mixtape with [...]

Headed out overnight for another New Year's ski trip. Destination: Beaver Creek - my absolute favorite place to ski. Looks like my Top 50 Songs of 2009 will have to wait 'til 2010.... wow that's strange to type. If I find some time during the trip, I'll begin another set of Download Code Contests. I've got 3 album downloads available from my Top 10 this year: JTE's Midnight at the Movies , Deer Tick's Born On Flag Day , and Conor Oberst's Outer South . Be sure to check back for those. For [...]
Here are my 25 favorite songs from the year 2009. I don't boast a thoroughly exhaustive music catalog, but I do try to listen to as much as I can across as many genres as possible. From an album standpoint, I was disappointed with this year of music. But there are some great tracks. Click on most of the titles to listen/download the song. - Joel 25. The National - [...]

Spoon - "Written in Reverse" "Written in Reverse" is the new single from Spoon 's upcoming Transference LP due out January 19th via Merge . And considering our blog's name, you might guess we're more than just a little bit excited about their seventh full-length effort. In other words, it gives us a nice excuse to post the album's teaser video below... Vulture Whale - "The Pipe" [...]
In an effort to somewhat merge the AD show on XMU with that of the blog proper, this is the first of what will most likely become a recurring series. After the jump, check a selection of 27 (mostly) new-ish tracks I've been spinning over the past few weeks - 1/2 of which have not [...]
(I mentioned this entry in the Mountain Man post and have since received a lot of email inquiries about it. For those who did not grab it the first time around, have at it below.) Recording under the moniker White Antelope, Fleet Foxes principal singer/songwriter Robin Pecknold continues to tackle folk covers on his MySpace page. [...]

I know I promised the Notcraigcast last week, but it didn't happen I'm afraid. After last week's amazing Craigcast Neil and I were intending to introduce Craig to all sorts of modern music which we thought continued some of the traditions of the blues music he was describing to us, but circumstances have rather conspired against us unfortunately. Neil is off on tour with Meursault playing his songs, and Craig is off on tour with his liver, taking it around the watering holes of Edinburgh and giving it a good, hard kicking in each one. Consequently [...]

Roma Termini (Train Station) - Lacio, Italy As some of you may know, I spent the last month with my girl friend traveling to every Piazza of Italy. And as some of you might know, that kind of traveling involves bus/train rides that map-out hours-long. And as some of you might know-OK, I'll stop with the tomfoolery and get to the point. I decided to break away from the original format and bridge the gaps between those brighter moments of my iPod's shuffle-mode, particularly during these lengthy commutes. This is a mix of songs [...]

I've been working on a cocktail called Grounds for Divorce MP3: Elbow - Grounds For Divorce (Live) MP3: Yim Yames - Long, Long, Long MP3: Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer (Live) MP3: Radiohead - Scatterbrain (Live) MP3: Wilco - I Am Trying To Break Your Heart (Demo) MP3: Jack Johnson - Rodeo Clowns (Demo) [...]

( Editor's Note: Today in the C.D. Singles Club, we've got our first b-side. We recognize that our electronic Singles Club is not real and, as such, doesn't really have "records" or "b-sides" or any other sort of tangible, physical artifact. We don't care; we're living the dream. Leave us alone or humor us. Your call.) The Forcefield Kids are a kind of hard to pin down "hip hop" duo from Newcastle, England. I put the "hip hop" inside of the quotes because the tunes on their upcoming Home [...]

Robin Pecknold's ever-changing solo project White Antelope (aka Monte Cristo, aka Carthage) has just added two more songs to its MySpace page. "Silver Dagger" and "Wild Mountain Thyme" join the already posted "False Knight on the Road" and "Guitar Duet." Head over and give them a listen. Also, speaking of Fleet Foxes , there was a great interview by The Stranger (read here ) with Pecknold summing up the last crazy year, while touching on the progress of the new album. Fleet Foxes will be playing Sasquatch [...]
Recording under the moniker White Antelope, Fleet Foxes principal singer/songwriter Robin Pecknold continues to tackle folk covers on his MySpace page. Big thanks to Kyle for both the heads up and mp3 rips. I could listen to an entire album of these (hint, hint). Fleet Foxes perform at the Sasquatch festival this weekend. Download: MP3: White Antelope [...]

Robin Pecknold has been releasing songs on his Myspace recently for his solo project the White Antelope. He recently covered the song the "Silver Dagger," a traditional folk ballad best known for renditions by Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Get the track below. Lyrics: Don't sing love songs; you'll wake my mother She's sleeping here, right by my side And in her right hand, a silver dagger She says that I can't be your bride. All men are false, says my mother [...]

Robin Pecknold is more widely known for his Fleet Foxes stuff, but he appears to have a solo project as well, covering folk songs. To call it a solo project may be exaggerating things slightly, because there's little evidence of this being much more than a name given to a MySpace page so he can post a couple of solo versions of stuff he just fancied recording. Maybe not, of course, there could be more to it than that. I'm no great Fleet Foxes fan, I have to confess. I think they have a few utterly [...]

So just cleaning up my desktop. I tend to find songs, take a listen, then know I am going to like it and simply download to my desktop. I tend to leave soo many tracks on my desktop that I miss actually listening to them! So here we have some tracks that haven't made it into an "organized folder" in order to arrange in perfect harmony (no pun intended) with my music library. I have included a selection for you to see if we are on the same page, but some were removed due to thinking they aren't really approved [...]
