It rained during the night but not nearly enough. Most of it on the road has already dried. The day is damp but warm and quite still. I opened the windows upstairs and could smell freshly mowed grass. Dampness seems to accentuate smells, and my nose was filled with the sweet smell of that grass, the flowers in the front garden and an earthy smell of dirt. I filled the feeders, including a suet feeder. When I was getting another cup of coffee, I looked out the kitchen window and saw a spawn eating the suet. I ran [...]

You can count on the factions of the fractured Philly band Drink Up Buttercup to keep us on our toes. When the group split in 2011, three of its four members re-formed as the ethereal echo-folk project White Birds. That band had a nice run, put out a solid EP and full-length, then fell off ... Mp3: White Birds - I Had a Dream I Did Everything Right
Photo by Tamar Burduli So I've been a really shitty person to the people I care about the most for some time now. I've been drinking too much, saying things that I don't mean, and pushing everyone who I care about the most in my life as far away from me as possible. This is my apology. I'm getting my shit together. I love you all. You know who you are. - James Harvey Says it all really. The new track from White [...]

Here's a new track called "I Had a Dream I Did Everything Right" from White Birds , who have been quite silent until now. Well, the heartfelt song also came with a message (below) from frontman James Harvey, which might help explain why this has been so. "So I've been a really shitty person to the people I care about the most for some time now. I've been drinking too much, saying things that I don't mean, and pushing everyone who I care about the most in my life as far away from [...]
Below, download a "name your own price" new song from White Birds, "I Had A Dream I Did Everything Right." It's a classic Motown "apology" song recasted for the hipster generation. I Had a Dream I Did Everything Right by White Birds Continue reading
As though the song couldn't get any catchier already, Philly lo-fi disco duo Night Panther - descendants of White Birds and Drink Up Buttercup - recorded and released a cover of Grizzly Bear's hit "Two Weeks" last month. It's a bright and blooming rendition, reaching for (and getting close to) Passion Pit stratospheres. Download it ... Continue reading

Fuelled by a lust for sex, synths, and Phil Collins (in that order), Night Panther are here to make you feel sexual. The self-described "sex pop band" was founded by best friends (or if you're Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinksi, "best fiends") Farzad Houshiarnejad and Mike Cammarata in order to fuel their youthful longings. As Night Panther , they set out to make your summer nights long and your parties uncut. Straight oughta Doylestown, Pennsylvania (and buddies with another LBYB favorite: White Birds ), these boys are not [...]

This weeks Top 30 sees Belfast quartet Girls Names take the number one position with their dark and lush new single 'A Troubled See' while Baltimore trio Dead Mellotron grab number two with the brilliant 'Making Up' off their new record Glitter. Columbia's cerebral groovers Believers leap into the Top 5 with 'Forward Forward Back while the best of the new entries 'VII Babies' by Montreal indie pop act [...]

Last weekend I did something a bit taboo. No, nothing that bad. What I did was this: I took my email inbox, and I cleared it. I archived everything - over 15,000 unread messages. It had just gotten a bit too out of control. Then, this week, I checked ALL my emails, filtered out what I wanted to cover, and pulled some select ones to add to my radio show. Understand this: going through sometimes up to 100 emails in an evening is very time consuming. You have [...]
Last fall I caught wind of this great band, White Birds , a Philly group that was creating lush pop music with a nice coat of fog. Just this past weekend the band released a new track from their debut, When Women Played Drums , which unfortunately will be on a limited cassette release. Again, they come at us with this really steady pop, with the vocals run through this wash of noise...it sort of reminds me of what I would expect a mello Arcade Fire to come [...]

White Birds - Waters James Harvey has a sort of magnetic charm - this sort of force that draws you into his songs like a ex-lover you know you shouldn’t speak to any longer but you can’t help yourself. There’s only a matter of time before the seduction pulls with enough force that we’re all playing his game. Get this on the When Women Played Drums EP limited edition cassette from Grizzly Records on July 10th. Previously: “ When Women Played Drums ”

White Birds premiered a new track called "Water" early today via My Old Kentucky Blog . The song will appear on When Women Played Drums limited edition cassette, which will be available on July 10 via Grizzly Records. You can listen to and download "Water" for free below.

And the premieres just keep coming. Philly's White Birds spent the first half of 2011 woodshedding in an old house outside the city, working tirelessly on what would ultimately become their debut When Women Played Drums . The record chronicles the breakdown of a relationship in a murky, reverb-laden song cycle that's sure to grab the attention of folks who want to love Arcade Fire, but swear that nothing good has happened since Jesus And Mary Chain called it a day. I'll spare you [...]

Soaked in reverb, White Birds ' dreamy psychedelic beach pop tune "Hondora" is just what I need. It hints of a day brighter than today; fog sits low outside my house and there's the stench of a standard Northwest rain in the air. "Hondora" has a sunny disposition that is calming and relaxing, and there is a hint of sadness that keeps it from being overly upbeat. As I said, perfect for today. The video is a wash of muted color, hints at longing and romance, and filled [...]
